The only real surprise for me, that I actually think means something, is Mafe ahead of Taylor. Everything else on here is either expected or too far down the depth chart to really be meaningful at this point, but Mafe demanding more playing time over Taylor seems real, and that's cool.
Also, it's nice to see Bellore with the first team offense where he belongs.
SSJ touched on the move in previous articles, but it is looking close to official now the DB room is so quick and good, that Coby Bryant's move to safety is possibly permanent. He has the CB coverage skills and game awareness, just maybe not as much lateral quickness as the other DBs. With Jamal still out, he solidifies the position, and he's probably better than Jerrick Reed II in everything except physicality.
OR, he is being listed as a S because he is good enough to be on the 53, and other guys who are good enough are CBs only. Either way, Reed's road looks harder now that Coby is listed there on semi-official paper.
I wouldn't read much beyond the first column. But the first column already brings surprises / interesting things:
* Dissly and not Fant is the starter at TE. That was not the case in 2022, with Fant taking 60% of the snaps, Dissly 52%, and Colby 40% (Mabry 0.5%).
* Jackson is the presumed starter outside in base. Witherspoon did not take it from him (yet?). Anyway, Witherspoon will play all nickel and dime snaps also presumably.
* "No news is good news". Devin Bush is the starter, so he must be at least looking the part.
* JSN will field some punts, but not (way more dangerous) kickoffs.
* Dee will probably make the roster, and may return kicks on week 8.
I can't see any scenario where Dee doesn't make the roster. They have known about his issue since February but kept hyping him up and his progress since then. It costs nothing to keep him on the roster as a suspended player for six games. Returning kicks when he gets back that makes sense to me too.
Witherspoon will be ok in his rookie year playing the nickel corner role, but for compensation reasons he won't stay happy in that role. Jimmy Graham wanted to get paid like an elite WR not a TE, and the league will not comp a 3rd CB like a #1. But for this year, he likely won't get wrapped around the axle about it.
You may be right, Chris H. But I will put it like this: Cooper Kupp is basically a slot receiver and he has a three-year, $80 million contract. If you had said a few years ago that a slot receiver would be among the highest-paid in the NFL, you'd be called insane! Christian Kirk as another example. Soon, Amon-Ra St. Brown will get paid big bucks. Nickel CB will be paid if they shut down players like that in the slot.
Fair point. The comp rules have indeed adapted to special talents. I guess we’ll see. If he plays there long term, the Seahawks should really stretch the traditional role and totally weaponize him.
Haha I love this! Mostly because people (including us here) will absolutely read way too much into these.
For example: how many plays do you really think the 'Hawks will run in a 2WR 1TE 1RB 1FB set? Answer: A very very small percentage. So don't stress that JSN isn't a "starter", because we know in the far more common and likely 3WR 1TE 1RB set he will be. (I'd also add, do you really expect Bellore to be deployed at FB ahead of Dareke who we saw used in that hybrid WRFB area late last year? I don't - basically, unless you're depth charting four/five times for the most common set-ups/situations they really don't mean much ever imo).
This shouts loud of something someone just threw together to roughly overview who's on the roster going into game week. Beyond that, there's almost no usable information here. Almost, I am noting that neither McIntosh nor Koback were listed as Returners and i'd have thought they could be better options than, well, any one currently listed there.
I wonder if compiling the depth chart is traditionally given to some old dude who's been there since '76, haplessly following Pete around trying to note down his thoughts during training camp. Because that looks like it was banged out one-fingered on an old typewriter. It's 2023, teach that man to use to a laptop! Just make sure you get heavy filters on his email so he can't respond to requests for info from anyone called 'Shawn MuckVay'.
Griffin Hebert & Noah Gindorff keeps coming up Gryffindor for me.
Also, Levi Bell keeps coming up Le'Veon Bell.
Yeah, the jumping around of college teams 'n leaving areas of proximity makes great hardships for players and families traveling great distances as well as for college rivalries.
You could be 100% right, Max. I think the Seahawks were definitely happy to release a more...I'll say "complicated" chart without commentary this time, but wanted to get the actual screenshots out to you asap. My take on it yesterday could be 100% wrong.
Placing Parkinson ahead of Mabry, which makes more sense...but by that logic, Cade Johnson should have been in the second column, and T. Lindsey should have been one line higher.
It isn't a very well-organized "chart". They're probably trying to say something like "no, really...don't try to read too much into this POS".
"Hey, intern. Since we are required to make a depth chart for the public, I want you to put these names in a chart. These guys go 1st, draw the other names from a hat and throw 'em on there, too. No, I don't care how it's laid out, just make sure it has no key or explanation, and is moderately ambiguous."

Totally agree with you.

Pete has some good things to say about Coby's play at safety, despite a report I watched to the contrary.
OR OR OR.... SSJ already mentioned Coby in the article and I am bad at retention.
OR OR... I am one of the people reading way too much into this, as per KHammarling's comment earlier.

Dissly got injured last year and may have had more snaps than fant if healthy.
Or Diss may be their #1 blocking TE and Fant their #1 Pass catching TE.
Pete usually likes a simple defense for his players so rotating spoon and Jackson outside might not be that likely.
That'd require 'spoon learning coverage responsibilities for 2 different positions in his rookie year

D Hall is coming on! Keep rolling young man.

interesting to me, since I read and heard in multiple places about how good Vi Jones was looking- A number #5 pick not starting ? Now that is weird!
I thought he might have passed BBK
I had the same reaction to Vi
Vi is a one of our players with a good chance to be snuck onto the practice squad
IF he doesn't make the 53. He has had some recent big ups from Pete and camp reports.
Griffin Hebert & Noah Gindorff keeps coming up Gryffindor for me.

I think you are reading the chart wrong. The first line is 1,2,3 and the first name on the 2nd line is 4.

"Good job, son."
Yaaaay BBK!
I think Mario Edwards and Mike Morris are the two most pleasant surprises.
Love seeing Mafe as a starter. I expect to see Nwosu, Mafe, Taylor and Hall all rotating through the two positions.
It seems weird (but understandable) to not see JSN and Witherspoon as starters, even though they’ll get a ton of play.
As long as we put our best team on the field I really don't care who starts when or at what position
