I sure hope the Seahawks are not going to try to move Haynes to Center or even Left Guard. Haynes played right guard all 4 years and has good tape against good teams. He also has the physical traits necessary to be a NFL guard. My hope is that he is as advertised a fringe starter in the NFL in year 1 and beats out Bradford over the summer. Bradford did not play at the starter level in year 1.
I like the Haynes pick. On top of all the positives, this is a guy who must absolutely/positively HATE to lose and is therefore hungry to win, if only he can get the right coaching and teammate support. UConn lost a lot of games (against a lot of strong teams) and that will put a permanent chip on the shoulder of a real man.
I bet we pick up a LB and SS, maybe some RB depth or WR depth. But I kinda wonder if we keep picking up players in the offensive trenches...our roster does not inspire confidence within the back up's, we need better depth on the O-line. BPA....TE Sanders??
Likely another OLine but they brought in Fant and Harris and now have another IOL. Depth is there. Stone can play in a quick need. Likely only keeping 9 players.
According to Brady Henderson, Haynes played RG exclusively at Connecticut, and Tomlinson has spent his career at LG.
Steve Muench at ESPN:
“Pre-Draft Analysis
Haynes is a four-year starter with good size and range. He is tough, relentless and gets under defenders' skin. He displaces defenders against the run and walls off backside defenders. Haynes is smooth climbing to the second level making him a good fit for zone-heavy schemes. He gets some push and tracks linebackers well on combo blocks. Haynes is also quick, has good length and can mirror in pass protection.
Post-Draft Analysis
Seattle signed veteran guard Laken Tomlinson, but still needed to address the interior offensive line and here the Seahawks get a potential starter. Haynes is the top pure guard on my board and he grades out as a rookie starter.”
Three rounds, no trades. Did they put decaf in the draft room? As I recall there was some concern that at least one more player would still have to leave to create salary cap room for this year's rookie class. I wonder if that factors into the paucity of picks we're taking? I'm still baffled that we haven't been more active, but possibly nobody wants to buy what we have to sell. Finally, I still don't understand why Olu isn't considered when we talk about center. He was competing in preseason, got hurt, never caught up. New scheme, new coach, new guards around him, but he's still an award-winning college player entering his second season. Is there something wrong here that we're not seeing/hearing about, is he just not good and not worth talking about, or was all the hype after last year's draft nothing but hype? Finally...sure, take Spencer Rattler. Why not. But if you're going to do it, do it now. But I won't be shocked if Jacksonville takes him just above us after I looked at their QB room.
Not that I know anything anyone else doesn't, but we might be slotting Olu² to play center, like in college. We let Evan go, and picked up an IOL that *can* play center, then have signed and now drafted 3 guards. These moves could point towards us being happy at center with him.
Regarding the lack of trades, I really haven't seen *any* trades that I would have said "I wish we got THAT offer to trade down". Seems like JSMM just liked who was there better than the mediocre offers teams have been offering. Also, the teams with tons of capital have been happy making a lot of picks. If this is a draft class with 100-120 guys that are similarly decent, you don't have anyone you really need to give up assets to go get. You can just stick & pick with your 11, 10, 8 or however many picks, and the other teams wouldn't want your picks outside the top-120 anyway.
I like the Haynes pick at guard. The guy played on a lousy team but still excelled at his postion. The best ability is avaialblity and he sure shows that. Drafted in front of Zinter Seattle didn't waste anytime on the clock for this pick. "Brings his Lunchpail to work" suggested the definitive blue collar interior lineman with 51 starts JS said. There was a consensus through the room from scouts, coaches and front office according to JS.
Cedric Grey LB, Jaden Hicks S and Cade Stover or Ja’Tavion Sanders TE would be my top 4 in round 4. For Grey, ESPN's Matt Millers comp is Patrick Queen. Hicks just sounds like a MacDonald type of safety. Hicks was projected rounds 2 or 3 by Zierlein (NFL). Athletic (Bruger) has Hicks as top guy remaining. ESPN #2.
Darren Waller has been training with Stover and Ja’Tavion Sanders in Vegas prior to the draft according to the Athletic. These 2 fourth round picks could have some real impact with whose left on the board.
I need to go find my comments from a year ago praising Christian Haynes and marking him out as a good pick. Why was i not talking about him this year? I honestly thought, that like Zinter and Beebe, he'd go in Rd 2 - but Guards really slipped this season which was interesting to watch.
We got a great take here. Experience, great character, and a mauler. Most analysts had him Top 5 at the position. Importantly for the 'Hawks he generally views better as a Run blocker than Pass Protecter, an area our OLine was not great at. Some will say he's not that quick or explosive, I say that's ok as his pure battle and strength is what he is best using. I actually think he'd be really good with KW3 behind him and Bradford on the other side. Two maulers that will take a second or two to make a gap, but then that gap will be wide open to the second level and KW3 can explode through in a way he's best at.
I love this pick. I was even awake watching and I may have made a bigger noise than when we took Murphy (mostly because for Murphy i was just stunned). Murphy, Williams*, Haynes - we have addressed the trenches hard!
#102 - Spencer Rattler is still there... I like him a lot. I think other teams will also be looking at him. This sets up a potential to trade down and try to get a '25 3rd which would be really good. It sucked to see Payton Wilson go, but there are still some LB options there to get. Ja'Tavion Sanders as a TE? Dominique Hampton Safety is there too, as is Malik Mustapha. We've done a great job so far this draft and because JS did a good job filling out the team in free agency there is zero pressure and we can just go get who they really really like, rather than reaching to fill a need. But please, draft Rattler and i'll be so so happy.
I like guys who excel on less than stellar teams: BE the competition! Haynes and Rattler fit here. It's the essence of Russel Wilson's early 'Go Hawks!' which became so contagious.
So is pick 4 02 going to be a linebacker? If so who is it? I'd like to see them get a linebacker, safety and edge on defense, and a TE and another guard on offense with 5 picks they have left.
Personally, I probably take Spencer Rattler at 102. The value there is really high as he could have it gone anywhere between the 2nd and mid 4th round. TJ Tampa would be the highest 'value' as he's got a 2nd round grade. I would be happy with that pick too. Outside of Payton Wilson and Trevin Wallace, the LB class didn't excite me. Someone like Omar Speights, Tommy Eichenberg, or even Edefuan Olofoshio could be 6th round or later picks with similar upside to the folks in the draft higher up.
Geno dances to his own tune, 3rd QB or not, so I see no down side to taking Rattler. I suspect injury will be a greater factor this year and determine whether he is throwing at 36. Howell would also be expected to continue the ass-kicking with no let-up. Ours is a tough Division and will require a deep bench at QB. Rattler has held his own behind lesser talent.
Yes, I think the safeties are a deeper group than the linebackers. Get a safety with the 2nd of the 4th round picks and snag a LB with the early 4th round pick. Gray is there, and so is Trotter from Clemson, but it's slim pickings at LB and LB was a weak group overall in this draft. I think they tried to move up ahead of the Chargers to get Colson, but couldn't swing the deal or whoever it was asked for too much in return for the pick.
I think Jaden Hicks is still there. The description of James Williams is intriguing as is that of Kalen King. I'd like backup for KW3 and Charbonnet. The knock on Will Shipley is that he lacks lower body strength and isn't great at breaking tackles, but if he's there in the fifth round I would love for the Hawks to take him. Plus, as a Huskys alum, I'd love to get either Zion or Edefuan. And if we don't draft Shipley, then I would like Dillon Johnson.
I watched (or half watched) all the coverage, and I was made nervous by all the picks that Arizona and the Rams were making. The Cards have already made *7* picks, and still have 5 more. The Rams made 4 picks, and still have 6 more. The youth movement is strong in the NFC west...
Kenneth...you gonna try and call the 1st pick in rd 4? It's the second pick after CAR, not too many variables....I would love your take on how JS might be thinking....
Trotter is there as is Kitan and Rattler. Dang he nice to have Trotter fall to us in one more pick. Be almost perfect draft with no trades. Trotter just 80% of his dad that would be an excellent 4th rounder.
Thank you Denver...got rid of that 7th rounder and got a 5th...I love trading with Denver
I like the Haynes pick. Just traded with Denver
I did not add yesterday but if Hawks thinking future Franklin still there

So does Seattle add a 4th round pick today and try to nab 3 by 118
Look at all that talent left at the start of round 4. The meat of the draft starts today! Do good John.
I love listening to Mike Mac talk about how he wants his team to play. If he gets that out of this group, what an absolute joy that would be to watch.
