Hey now! I think it was a good pick! What’s the sense of trading back to get more picks in a field of OK-not-great prospects?

Let’s give this a look through several different lenses before we pronounce judgement. In light of his backstory … consider what just happened to/for this young man: As of tonight he’s a first round draft pick for the reigning super bowl champs, possibly replacing the super bowl MVP. I’m thinking this might be the highest motivation any young athlete could experience. Motivation has a significant effect on performance. I don’t think highly of throwing rookies into the fire but he’s a RB not a QB so the assignment is dramatically simplified: move the ball down the field toward the opponent’s goal line, and don’t drop it. He’s got a terrific support crew who will continue to get better and who will definitely everything they can to insure his success. We will just have to wait to see what develops.

Certainly not the best draft year but given the options I think JS made the best decision, let’s hope this young guy learns fast and can hold on to the ball.

I gave them an A, because why not? Ken, if you are right when you say it was pretty much this guy or a big drop off, this is a team that needs to add top tier talent, not depth. I think it was a ballsy move. I like how his teammate J Love talks about him. Let's go back to back baby.

I give the pick a B because (a) Schneider has earned the benefit of the doubt and (b) he was likely underwhelmed by the alternatives. While I can’t say that I’m thrilled, I also can’t say that I expected to be thrilled. Price does have an opportunity to make an immediate impact.

Bah, should have stuck to my guns from a few months ago we were going to go WR/RB, talked myself around to what "I" wanted rather than following the thought processes JS/MM would most likely take.

Caleb Banks and Kaylen Rutledge both going really early compared to expectations, but not too surprised. Banks is freaky, if he stays healthy. Rutledge is such a raw talent if he can refine that he'll be a huge success. But for the 'Hawks McDonald is still there as is Bisontis, so maybe i was just a day early.

I think we've seen a lot of the DB's "fall" because it's the comparatively deep position. Teams I think were pushing for their best option at other positions where the drop off becomes a lot bigger from #1 to #2 to #3, whilst at DB you can go through 6 or 7 before the talent starts to crater out as much. I'm expecting a Rd2 run on them now, so don't expect Hood or Cisse (for example) to last to us again.

But none of that is about Price. Erm... sure, i guess. Or rather, I like him, like how we can use him and build another 1A 1B duo with Charbie. It just feels steep to use a 1st on a 1A/B RB. But it does need context of 32nd, AND clearly all the trades had happened so JS had no-one on the phone, so might as well pick your top guy rather than getting cute. He can also be an alternative to Shaheed in the return, so the ST value does add to the evaluation. And he's got decent hands when moved wider into a receiving role. Certainly going to be useful and a compliment to the offence, doing different things to Charbie or Holani or Shaheed or JSN.

Rams - what?! Smell of desperation in the air, but I do believe Simpson is a better prospect than the Raiders. At least it didn't make the Rams immediately better, so we have best odds to maintain our slim competitive advantage.

Cards - Yeah, they nailed that one. On the up side for us, their O-Line ain't great so hopefully we can just bottle up Love nice and early

49ers - Don't blame them and probably best move for them, good chances to bolster that battered roster today with options.

I graded the pick ass a "C". I was kind of hoping to draft Casius Howell. But then, WTF do I know? I trust JS and the coaching staff so I'll happily go with their selection..

I wanted the Hawks to end up with Price...preferably after a trade down....but they clearly felt he was value here...in light of their needs.

With what was left on the board, I don't think J. Price was the best player available. JS claims to always go BPA (from their board) in the early rounds. I think he just proved he drafts for need more than BPA. But he is the master, and I am not even a disciple, more like someone in the pew. So I will eventually build up some enthusiasm for Price. I had hoped he had fallen in love with the DT J. McDonald or one of the DB's. Or an edge, though I do wonder if he would have taken Faulk who was taken one pick earlier. I honestly think Price would have been there in the late 2nd round.

The one silver lining is that he will likely start and if he stays healthy he could step right in and play at his highest level. Or close to it.

Oh, and I wasn't allowed to join the chat for some reason.

OK one down. That’s one pick from the list of players that fit into the buckets. Assuming we don’t take QB, that leaves TEs Stowers and Bentley, WRs Lance and Heidenreich, DL Dennis-Sutton, and LBs Golday Hill Jr and Rodriguez. Oof...

Oh...and LB Kyle Louis

I’d rather have signed Walker the Super Bowl MVP for around the same money. Price has way better vision than K9, and he cuts like a Ginsu knife but he’s not the college prospect that Walker was. And it says something about this class that he was drafted a round earlier. There were two corners, two edges, a safety and a linebacker that I was hoping for if we were to stick and pick, but I am just a fan. I really thought that after last year’s lopsided draft we’d lean into defense.

But on the bright side, I do like his story and his was a position of need. This is a championship roster and running backs are usually plug and play. We won’t be seeing this guy scrambling around in the backfield and tackled for a loss like K9 was known to do.

Hawkdawg's avatar

So was Barry Sanders. And he turned out alright. Price was a bit of a flyer at this point, but I like to watch backs with vision and cuts, and we needed one of those. Looks like he'll platoon with Wilson, and that should be a decent combo...

I don't think Schneider can say with a straight face that he doesn't pick for need in the first few rounds anymore. Love or hate the picks, that's two years in a row now that team needs had to have come into play.

KHammarling's avatar

There's reaching for need, and picking for need because the best player happens to fit.

Zabel, absolute steal. Filled a need but he was by far the best Guard option in the draft, and proved as such. Not sure who else would have been a bpa pick over him?

Price, slightly different. I think he's the most complete player on the board at 32, without a notable question mark. Yes there are options that 'could' reach higher levels but all have noted downsides or gaps in their game. Price is the most filled out ready to go footballer we could have at 32, I'd categorise it as BPa over Need, where Need would have pushed towards an Edge like Howell or CB like Hodd, good potentials but questions on them.

Zabel it could be argued that he was legitimately the BPA at 18 last year, and he didn't disappoint, and hopefully Price doesn't disappoint.

Grant's avatar

It could very well be that both this year and last they picked the guy with the highest grade on their board. It's just harder to believe that need didn't come into play this year, which makes me question Zable as a BPA pick last year too. Whatever the case it worked out last year and hopefully will again.

Don't love the pick with McDonald and the two Tennessee corners still on the board. Feels like this absolutely was a 2026 play (vs. the 2027 play SSJ has been calling for months!)

Of course now Mr. Price will make three All-Pro teams and I'll have to pretend I didn't hate the pick like everyone else.

Now go pick up Gennings Dunker and the Mullet of Doom in R2 and Dani Dennis-Sutton/some corner depth in R3

Does also look like we’re rolling with Bradford. Not that we couldn’t get Bisonti at 64 maybe but pretty good chance he won’t last that far

zezinhom400's avatar

Lots of similarities for me with the LJ Collier pick in a really weak draft class. Didn’t get the trade down so had to make the pick and drafted for need. Hate it when we draft for need.

That said, and looking at it on the bright side, if we had got him in at 96 I’d have been ecstatic and would have thought he’d be RB1 anyway. I do think he’s RB1 even if Charbs is healthy.

So I gotta conclude it’s a good pick and does fill the one starting job on the roster.

I think Price is a good pick for the Hawks, but it just feels a little early. But, for the record, that’s exactly what I said about Grey Zabel at 18 last year. So I guess that goes a long way towards explaining why all those GM job offers haven’t materialized for me…

Grant's avatar

Same. I didn't like picking Zabel when we did last year. I was wrong then and I'll be happy to be proven wrong again.

But last year JS made it better by trading up for Emmanwori in the second round. Let’s see what magic they can work on days two and three.

Sea Hawk Run!'s avatar

I’m a fan of the running game, but I’m “meh” on the Price pick. That said, I hope he absolutely lights it up!

I’m not against drafting a RB high. But I expect him to have an exciting resume. An injury history, few carries, second fiddle, and turnover-prone isn’t the bullet list I expect to see for a RB at 1.32.

But, the pick fills a need, and if the cliff for RBs is as steep as they say, this will cause a domino effect. Few rookie RBs coming in will make for few good vet RBs being pushed aside and becoming available. It seems that JS might have been handcuffed, and Price was the one and only good option.

Let’s hope this plays out very, very well.

And hopefully, Charbs will come back soon and strong. If Price gets half the available carries, it mitigates risk on multiple levels.

I am shocked!! I did not expect a RB at 32…Especially one that never started a college game, has injury history, limited film as a pass catcher or in pass pro…

BUT, no one is paying me to draft players in the NFL, and last year worked out pretty good, so I will just sit back, watch JS do his thing, and see how this all plays out….it appears the 2026 draft class is truly underwhelming….
