Things have worked out pretty well since Schneider stopped the obsessive trading down and “let the draft come to us.” Leave well enough alone.

I think (and hope) there's a very strong chance Ty Simpson is drafted 32nd overall, just not by the Seahawks.

I generally like the idea of using a valuable position to stock the pantry both for insurance purposes and as trade bait. I agree with other commenter's comments about not necessarily doing it this year. I just think with lack of draft capital and the odds of landing anything great...I dunno. I guess I've used 'extra' picks in sims to get a qb a few times. Allar or Pavia are the two I've targeted. Maybe JS will zig hard when everyone expects him to zag. He's done it before....

Drafting a QB with one of our four picks? I think it's cool, as long as it's a high ceiling guy late in the draft. Example, if Cole Payton from good ol' NDSU (Seahawks' Triple A at this point?) is still on the board at 188, that would be an enticing pick cuz apparently he has LOTS of potential with enough time, and the right coaching.

He broke NDS's all-time QB records (yds/game, yds/play) which means better than Carson Wentz and Trey Lance, notably not successful at the next level but went #2 and #3 overall at the time so a pretty safe distance from that at 188 (and, if they had been picked at 188 with the expectations of being picked at 188, would they have matured properly before being thrown into the frying pan?)

Athletically intriguing

- Russ 5"11, Payton 6'2 5/8"

- Russ 204, Payton 237 (he was going to be moved to TE till his arm became undeniable)

- Russ 4.55 40 yd dash, Payton 4.56

- Russ 1.59 10-yd split, Payton 1.57

(won't bore you with the rest but he's at least as athletic as Russ, and with prototypical QB size -- including 10"hands)

- Is a football fiend, Bobo-level practice hound, a scout called him "a first round person"

- 72% completion rate in his senior year (Russ 73%; Milroe 64%)

I'd be excited to have him in the mix at 188

I don't see JS using phenomenal athletes as trading cards.

Do you know of an instance where a team has drafted someone they didn’t need and using them as trade bait? This would involve knowing a team further back in the draft was desperate for that position group.

Next year would be ideal timing to pick another QB. Lock will have played out his contract, Milroe should be prepared to be a solid backup, and the team will have many picks available.

With only four picks this year, and multiple starters poached, it’s not time to be cute. Edge, RB, CB, and Safety have snaps to fill. Interior OL could use an upgrade. Interior DL is in good shape, but will age out before long. Even LB could be stronger. Best player available at any of seven positions wouldn’t force a desperate selection.

Something tells me it will be a Safety. Safety isn’t one of the coveted positions, like QB, Edge, LT, or WR. Pick 32 might not get you the best player in the class, but it could very well get you the best Safety in the class. Getting a “best” at 1.32 would be a nice result.

Look at the Zabel pick. Some said that 1.18 was too high for a Guard. But rather than get the nth best Edge, JS got the very best iOL with his selection. Maybe even trade back and still get the best safety, later this month.

That's almost exactly what I was thinking lately....safety at 32. A lot of mocks have safeties sliding and there might be a great option. AJ Haulcy is next gen stats top overall rated safety...just saying.

Thank you for the article, I do like the thought experiment at 32 but I really don’t think Simpson is going to be there. If he is there, somebody will come calling and will try down and get some extra pics. If he’s not there, I don’t wanna do a by now. Pay later or pay now by later trade scenario where we’re trying to find someone to trade one of our extra quarterbacks down the road for something that we may or may not need or another team is prepared to trade back to us. It’s kind of a layaway program. I do think the 32nd pick we could be stuck with and unless we really want to take a stab at one of the positions like a Zion Young or the Notre Dame number two running back or some other cornerback that we love it might be more fortuitous to trade that away in some manner and get somebody like a pass rusher for a win now, if there are teams really ready to move some players like the Giants or Las Vegas or Cleveland you know, but a lot of those I think are probably pipe dreams. another option is to trade one of our extra 12 pics from next year and package it with the 32nd pick and move up a couple spots to get something that we like a bit better and a player with a better pedigree.

I’m more of a take a QB every other year in the draft. (Vs every year) I say this because we only have 4 picks, we have Darnold, we don’t really know what Milroe’s ceiling might be, and 2027 is likely to have far better options at QB. I’ve nothing against Ty Simpson, in face I WANT him there at 32. I want an overpay some team might pay to jump the Jets and Cardinals and for the 5th year option which could be more valuable for a 1st round QB than any other position on the team.

Maybe Miami thinks Malik Willis could be the answer. Maybe not. Maybe they take an edge or CB at pick 30, but then decide three 1st round picks are better than two. Why not move up ahead of the Cardinals and Jets and take a flyer on Ty Simpson. We get 43 and 75 to go with 64 and 96. This draft doesn’t have deep depth, but it has decent depth until about pick 100.

I'm with you on trading down at 32 esp if it means a high 2027 pick. One of three scenarios:

- something miraculous like Murphy II still being available at 16, so you keep the pick

- no one wants to trade for 32, so you pick BPA

- you do get a decent trade offer like a high 2027 to move back 10-15 positions so you take it.

- I'm personally less intrigued by getting more picks in 2026, it's too weak a class

But considering the team we have today, and some potential post-draft trade or FA opportunities still out there, I think 32 is best traded.
