I don't think this stops the Hawks from taking any QB. They are setting themselves up to take BPA. Could be all sorts of players, could be a tradeback to select a WR for a team that wants 'the best' defensive player in the draft.

This tells me Seattle is not high on the QB draft picks and will focus on other needs this draft. In true seaside fashion this is just my option and I reserve the right to be wrong and admit being wrong! :o)

I’m not qualified to evaluate NFL talent but regardless of what they do at #5, I would love them to draft Bijan at 20. Lots of depth at DL/edge/LB in later rounds.

To me, signing Lock implies a couple of things: 1) Carroll likes what he saw in practice etc last year, and 2) Lock has more potential than Will Levis, at least as far as Pete Carroll is concerned.

With regard to #2, I think it signals that Pete/John don't see top-five value in drafting Levis or Richardson. A one year deal for Lock is far less commitment than drafting at QB at #5 overall. It could still happen and I will be excited to see the development if they take one of these guys, but I think their preferred draft value QB pick is farther down the board. I think they're gonna take a QB at some point in this draft, just not at #5 anymore.

Someone should tell Drew it's OK if he wants to wear #3 now.

I like this deal.

I'm very pleased with this signing, as I am, really, with all of them so far. Very "team focused." Building players up. Everybody makes sense. Of course Geno needs a back up, just as Russell did, and as Geno matured and absorbed the offense and honed his skills, so will Drew. I like the center. I like getting Jarran Reed back. I like the idea of Dre Mon Jones. I'm getting a great "team" vibe from this year's offseason so far. It feels like we're really building on something. Go Hawks!

I expect the Seahawks to get Anderson with #5, then get Calijah K with#20. Onward I like Drew Sanders as the first pick in round 3, after that BPA.

Excellent news... I've been on the Lock hype train for a long time now and not re-signing him would have forced me to get off and admit I was wrong (what? me wrong?)

The way they've been killing free agency this season I wonder if they try to trade 5 for an existing player... like Philly did with AJ Brown (to marvelous effect).

Someone tell me what to think. Much like last season when we gave Geno a one year deal, I thought that if they weren't going to bring someone else in to be the likely starter, then why not make it at least 2 years? If they think the have "two starters on their roster" as Pete said, then why not tie them up to a short but better contract in case they ball out? Not that I have high hopes for Lock as a starter, but I have only seen him play in Denver and preseason. And he didn't look very good either time to put it nicely. But players develop, and while Lock had a up and down college career he was 1st team all SEC so potential would seem to be there.

Doug's avatar

Far be it from me to tell you want to think, but if I were Drew I would not want to sign a deal longer than 1 year.

If something happens to Geno, Lock starts and plays well (he is betting on himself), then he is well placed to sign for a bag in 24.

If Geno starts all 21 games and Lock watches, he may want to move on to get a chance elsewhere.

Geno has his contract with some nice guaranteed loot and is in the #1 slot now until someone knocks him out. Lock is best to take it a year at a time until he gets his shot.

And from the Seahawks side... if 2nd half of 22 Geno shows up and makes it clear the Seahawks need a QB upgrade, they have maximum flexibility to either choose to promote Lock, sign (or trade for) a vet, or keep one of Lock/Smith for another year and draft a QB in 24.

Expand full comment
Grant's avatar

Totally agree. It is in Lock's best interest to only sign a one year deal with the Hawks. If someone wanted to give him a multi-year starting QB contract, it would have happened already. At this point he's better off taking it one year at a time until he can prove himself and cash in. This one year contract is a solid deal for him too. If he takes over the QB1 job for some reason, the incentives are good enough to make everyone happy.

Man...watching this, and where they've spent their cash, here's what I'm thinking:

1. They are trading down from 5 unless Anderson falls to them. Or, they are pretty sure Anderson is going to fall to them bc someone (Atlanta, Raiders, Tennessee, Tampa stretching) is going to trade to #3. I know Garoppolo went to Raiders but he could be like a Geno, air cover for a future QB1 like Richardson who strikes me as a Raider type.

2. Or, they trade down bc they have 4-5 edge rushers they like (Tyree Wilson, Nolan Smith, McDonald, Ojulari, Adebawore) and two of them will be available at 20 or earlier. Notably, they've spent their cash on the interior DL...we should expect an Uchenna extension any time now, but they need at least two more along with Taylor and Alton Robinson (who I still like). But, should expect edge rushers more than ever now

3. the other picks in rds 1-3 will be RB, LB, and C. Honestly, I could see them taking Bijan Robinson at whatever spot they get for #5, eg Raiders #7 or Atlanta's #8 (most likely). He won't last till #20. Even if they sign Zeke, he's a RB3 right now, incredible how ponderous he looked last year. I know we really need a WR3 but it's not that deep a class and someone not flashy like Goodwin last year will be available they can pick up.

So I'm guessing they go RB/Edge/Edge/C/LB with their post trade-down picks and may end up with another Rd2 or 3 pick in their trade-down, although the big plum will be a 2024 1st rounder.

Also thing Wags is coming back, shoulda been signed by now if he was going elsewhere.

Crazy?

The great thing about what the Hawks are doing ... They are just incredibly flexible heading into the draft.

If they like a rookie QB? Get him

If they like a Dlineman? Get him

Do they have a trade partner? trade back

PC and JS are back (and have been since the RW trade) in their element. Building a team. This is what these guys are really good at.

I think B Robinson could be the plan. I can't see why they let Penny walk at 1.3 unless they like someone. You certainly don't want to miss him, I think middle of round 1 or, another back early round 2

For sure he won't last past the Lions at #18, don't shocked if they took him at #6. That team loves bluechip draft talent, and they need a RB1. Falcons love an offensive freak player and drafting offence early, at #8 they'd be a real option to grab him. Bears at #9, don't discount it to ease pressure on Fields by establishing a genuine running game. Texans at #12 would enjoy bringing the UT man in to support their new QB. Moons at #16 as well could grab him to again make life easier on their QB and become a pain-in-the-ass team with tough DLine and power run game.

Then you've got potential trade-ups (yes I know most people will scoff at a team trading up in Rd1 for a RB, but you can't count it out). Ravens love the run game and need a fully fit option and trading from #22 wouldn't be crazy expensive. Dallas jumping from #26 is reasonable in the post Zeke world, Jerry would love him a new pet RB star. Bills from #27? Wouldnt shock me if they wanted a step up running game to benefit their open title window.

If PC/JS really want Bijan, the only guaranteed option is #5 (maybe you can convince Lions to move up one by dangling their desired CB choice as a threat?), otherwise from #6 down you're gambling against 8 teams taking him or jumping you to take him ahead of #20. Take Bijan #5, use #20 on defence.

I doubt he makes it to 20. Five is too rich, but if Anderson is there with Carter, a trade down will reap something. Maybe not a massive haul, but we don't need to get a massive haul, we just need someone to trade down no further than about 10. 8 or 7 would be preferable. Then take Bijan. Unless they want a CB, WR, or T, even Tyree is a reach for 5. Trading down from 20 might also make sense unless they want another OLB, or Kancey. Maybe they would reach for a tackle to convert to G, but it a slight chance they want to go that way in the first round even at 20. Maybe after another trade down? Then anything is possible.

If Pete truly believes in Drew Lock, there is no reason to look elsewhere. That first pick is more valuable than for a backup QB. Though, I can see it, and will entertain the possibility on draft day. I've cheered for terrible picks and wished for picks that turned out terrible. My hit rate is nothing to brag about. I feel very comfortable putting myself into your capable hands, Ken.

Truly, if this were stocks, we'd all be rich. So who do we draft first in this draft? I crafted that sentence intentionally. Our first pick might not be at five, and I love the idea of banking some of this draft capital into a first or second next year.

Anything is possible now. I really want a prediction from you, Ken, because I am in an office pool. Well, that's a lie, but I want to know bad enough to be tempted to sin.

Otherwise who can they take at 5 except Jalen. I don't think they want him.

It just takes 4 teams to be enamored with an available player that isn't him (surely QB) for us to land Anderson. I'm skeptical about how teams actually view this QB class, but my draft thoughts and $3.50 will get you a medium coffee at Starbucks.

Very happy with this decision and expected it all along. Although TB was a bit of a scare.

Lock still has potential to be a long-term solution at QB and the Hawks have said so much. He is only 26 with professional experience and high upside.

I am still waiting to hear (from anyone but namely Staton who blocks all comments) why he sees Levis as a better option than Lock. I'm sure there is some, but I would personally just like to hear it. Or any other rookie QB other than the 4-5 years of club control on rookie contract.

Great off-season so far, lets keep it rolling and crush the draft!

Let's just think back to a year ago (ok, after the draft) when General Consensus said (while laughing hysterically) that the Seahawks were tanking because Pete said he had "two #1s".

Then Geno wrote back, and Pete is a genius, even more so because they got Geno to sign a TEAM FRIENDLY contract! Now, obviously, the Seahawks have two firsts and CLEARLY (says General Consensus) the Seahawks will draft a QB in the first round. They should even trade up!

But Pete says, "I have two #1s".

Never listen to General Consensus.

I no longer post there, but I feel like Rob might be a good guy if you had a face to face conversation with him. There's something about the keyboard that brings out the snarkiest in some people. I don't know if it's reading comments too quickly and misjudging someone's tone or what. I called him out on being a dick to someone about a year back and he apologized and admitted his response wasn't fitting to the statement they had made. I half expected to be banned, but he was actually cool about it.

But I'm on read-only now because he's done it again and again since then. I feel like he attaches himself to his work too much. It's not personal that I don't think Will Levis is going to be a good pro. It doesn't mean that I think he is a poor scout for falling in love with Levis' traits. I've probably watched a dozen Kentucky games from this and last year, not scores of hours of all-22 tape of him like Rob has. But if that's the criteria for having an opinion, his comment section would be empty.

You summed up in one sentence what I just spent 20 minutes typing out. I've been posting on FG since the beginning but less and less often now because too many people take it personally when you disagree with them. Just this week when Barton was cut, I mentioned that we currently had no starting caliber inside linebackers on the team. The first response was "too bad free agency and the draft are over so we're stuck with that." I mean c'mon! Did I say that? And more importantly, would you say that to my face? I hope as this blog grows that we can make it remain civil. Ken can moderate things, but the commenters are the ones who set the tone.

He's the scapegoat for every move the team makes. "If we lose DK, Pete has to go." We resign Metcalf, "Overpay! Act of sheer desperation, fire Pete!" I understand it more when Rob wants a coaching change because he's a lifelong soccer fan. In the Premier League, those guys switch coaches and players all the time. One of the funniest things to me is the reaction on FG when you ask them who they want to replace Pete with. They act as if it's a trick question and you are making arguments from bad faith. A common refrain is, "If your roof is leaking, your first concern is replacing it!" Yeah, and before you rip your roof off, you had better have found a good contractor.

I have not been keeping track of where we are at in the cap, but it feels close...With all the Safeties being looked at, this May be telling their hand in regards to Jamal Adams. Will the net-cap-reduction the Hawks would get by cutting/trading him, be a necessity to sign the 2023 draft class?
