Okay, we are set at WR. Now, how does this affect our DL when their contracts are due. Can you pencil out a scenario where we get to keep our DL with the salary cap?
I thought the Jacksonville offer to Jake Bobo was for about $5M per year, times two, and I was against resigning him. It turns out it was a total of $5'ish million for two years. Heck yes! Sign him up. Thankfully, I was wrong.
I'm reminded of that old series of credit card commercials where they list out the cost of several items and then in the end they give the net goal achieved and call it priceless... Getting a wide receiver no one can touch 168 million dollars, signing your fan favorite special teams guy 5.5 million dollars, making sure that long snap is perfect 2.9 million dollars, winning another Superbowl...priceless.
Nothing wrong with paying a genuine star, genuine star money. We all knew for years how good JSN was, in 2025 the rest of the NFL caught up to that knowledge. Now he's reset the market because he is in that discussion of best in the league, not just as WR but full-stop!
As always i'll be interested to see the full breakdown when it comes, and what wiggle room there is (or isn't) in case of regression, and what this means to the 'Hawks cashflow coming up. But on the face of it it's a solid deal. Right on expectation and market value, which is all you can ask for when an X-Factor player.
Honestly, I might not accept that contract if it is truly for a total of 6 years. By the time we are paying JSN 42M/Y the salary cap will have gone up another 20% or more. Puka will be getting more per year than JSN by a fair amount, and a third contract two years earlier.
JSN gets “biggest contract ever for WR”, JS gets genuine star for 6 more years total. These biggest contracts ever rarely last more than 1 season and you can bet a $1 to a donut, that Puka will see thais as below his starting point in negotiations with Rams.
Yes JSN could have probably gotten more, but this is “win-win” for JSN and Seahawks.
Jaguars figured that the Hawks Really needed Mr. Bobo. One of their players or staff went to school with Jake 'n asked if management could push the Hawks to pay more 'n help the Bobo Family. The Jaguars said, "Sure, why not." The Bobo Family is Happy 'n will be Rooting for the Jaguars for gerenations. Good feeling "story." 😏
This “his skills as a receiver to consistently get open despite not being the fastest or the biggest pass catcher in the league”. Those of us who’ve been around for a tad bit (like forever, now over 50 years of Seahawks fandom) will recall a guy who was not fast, not quick, and was first receiver in NFL history with 100 career TD receptions and holder of multiple receiving records. Seattle does it again.
It still blows my mind that a receiver who touches the ball maybe 5-7 times a game makes $42M but a RB who touches the ball 20+ times per game is not worth $15M per. Especially with how much emphasis is put on "establishing the run" to open up the offense...
Not an editorial on the JSN deal or the decision to not sign K9, just an observation.
I struggle with the cost disparity as well. I guess one way to look at it is the yards per touch. JSN averaged 15.1 yards per catch for 1793 yards vs Walker's 4.6 yards per rush and 9.1 yards per catch for 1309 yards.
$42 mil per year for a star receiver vs $20 mil per year (Barkley's contract) is pretty amazing.
Another way to look at it is that RBs have drastically shorter careers, on average, than WRs. They take a beating and tail off much younger than WRs. They are also seen as more easily replaceable, as JS pointed out during the JS Show on Seattle Sports last week.
This is a good point, but it's also about snaps vs. touches. How much does JSN's presence manipulate a defense to create opportunities for the rest of the offense? It's tough to quantify the impact a player has without touching the ball.
For sure. Good coaches will use misdirection and threaten one area to expose another as much as possible. That's good scheming and play calling. JSN is so much better than a typical WR, however, that coaches game plan around him specifically. I don't think the Seahawks had another player last year with that kind of impact, including K9.
Your point that K9 cost $15M vs $42M for JSN is well taken though. That's a big difference and K9 was way better than just some replacement-level system-RB.
The only number that really matters is the 120 million in guaranteed money,! The rest is just feel good fluff. Good contract for both sides. Now let's get Spoon and Bobo done!

Please, I’m nervous.
ESPN is reporting the Seahawks are matching Bobo's offer from the Jags as well. The Seahawks might be higher than 29th in pass attempts next season.
Yeeeeeesssss. Boboooooooooo!

Let's enjoy a lot more JSN to come!
Not just our best player, one of the best in the whole league. Very reasonable compensation.

That’s why this was a team friendly deal
Good for JS and JSN!

It is certainly a win for the Hawks, and JSN is covered in case of catastrophic injury.
And Bobo is staying. Apparently JS needs mo Bobo.
As we all do. Gon Bobo!!! Go Hawks!!!

Not nearly as big of news but long snapper Chris Stoll was also just resigned.
The trio return. Best unit in the league.
And fan favorite Bobo.

I agree 100%, JSN is the modern day Steve Largent
And Bobo

You could say the same thing about the RB as well, e.g. play-action passes.

We're paying market rate for one of the two or three best players at a position the league values highly.
I mean, as noted, it's a lot of money.
By the standards of this moment, he's worth every penny.
Witherspoon (as noted) will be tougher.
