A play that will make the highlights, but not the stats was the trick play where Geno (now not pressured, so adequate time) threaded the needle to DK, well downfield. Unfortunately, the illegal man downfield negated the play.
So, he can throw long, but will the OL help him do it comfortably?
I was shocked (in a good way) that Geno had the arm for that distance and velocity. It looked nice! But also DK Metcalf made a play. A wild play. It's like threading a needle if you have someone on the other side of the hole in the needle willing the thread towards success.
But if Geno has the arm for it, time for Waldron to figure out how to make WRs open instead of double-covered and smothered.
Sure, but there is also the play where he threw an interception (not on a trick play) that was negated by penalty. Can Geno physically throw a deep ball? Yes, he did all the time at WVU iirc. However, can he do it well and in a way that doesn't lead to constant interceptions? That remains to be seen.
In my heart of hearts, I feel Mariota would deliver better in Seattle's offense vs Atl's. He also feels more impervious to the risk/reward shyness that Geno is credited with. Thus, the lower floor higher ceiling scenario we already have in town.
As for Pete's remarks this week...I think he is subtly showing an increased tolerance for Drew Lock-like behavior...not necessarily Drew himself but it seems the coach's comments are leaning to upping the rusk/reward ratio.
Kenneth, I would imagine the SJ community would value your input on that subject.
I will admit my choice was Marcus Mariota, when he became unavailable I was not disappointed. His plus was he had played a lot of football and he had taken a team to the playoffs. It was not he will turn us into NFC West Champs. Also keeping track of fumbles is a good thing. If you throw a pick a lot of times you will have advanced the ball. If you fumble set to pass your turning it over and losing the ball and field position.
Odd that Seattle didn't try any long passes against SF. Not odd in theory if the game is close. Just as in war battle plans must change. At some point the Niners defense would have been jumping every pass. This did answer my question, Pete is involved in the offensive concept. This is unfair to Shane Waldron. Like I said in a close game and Geno's short passing expertise good idea, but you have to flow with the game. The Niners have proven they can win with average quarterback play because their defensive line is deep and talented. Seattle won a Super Bowl with same type defense and a above average quarterback who became great.
It’s hard to go deep when a) the QB doesn’t have the arm for it and b) the defense takes away your best deep threat (*and* running game) and the DC is right to believe that the QB can’t beat them with what’s left.
If the Seahawks knew all the choices at QB were bad and they settled on Geno and Lock, then why not take a good look at Lock this season to see what they have?
It's maddening to see Geno being pushed out there each week.
To Broncos fans, I think they would say Lock is even worse than Geno. We get that "Grass is greener" feeling because we've never had to watch Lock each week. I do agree with you, at some point Seattle will have to find out. But Drew Lock is also very bad, based on what we know.
I can’t believe Pete is ok with his Offense being toothless. Geno is uninspiring, boring to watch, AND comes across as tool. I usually watch the games no matter what, but I had to turn it off last week. 32 yards in the 2nd half or some shit. So we lost 27-7 and I’m not saying Lock is the answer but maybe you lose 34-17. Football is supposed to be entertaining right? I can’t watch many more consecutive scoreless quarters.
Keep in mind that Drew Lock doesn't have a track record for getting into the end zone either. He was horrid as Denver's starter, not just because of INTs. One of the lowest-rates of scoring in the league in 2020. Pete is looking to 2023 and just trying to survive the season with his job in tact.
The options are bad. I guess I thought they were going to try and develop Lock. Coach away some of those bad habits, or at least attempt to. Maybe he was much worse than they expected him to be. I guess he couldn’t just come right and say that though…touche’ Joe I know when I’ve been bested 😉
My shot in the dark guess: John Schneider liked Drew Lock. Pete Carroll is nonplussed. Carroll doesn't want the Seahawks to become "The Drew Lock Show." Maybe he's resisting as long as possible.
Totally feasible. Has anyone noticed how similar Carroll/Smith is to Tomlinson/Trubisky? If you listen to a Steelers podcast you could easily swap out Geno for Mitchell. They are having very similar discussions in the Steel City
Did you see Pete’s presser. He’s anything but okay with it. His main concern was the blocking. The OL should have an easier go, this Sunday. Pete says he wants Geno to open it up.
I didn’t see it, I can’t listen to those anymore. I was never anti-Pete but there are some things that have definitely started to annoy me. He says always compete but then some players can be absolutely terrible and still start. Jackson and Taylor have been dreadful. I need to know why they play almost every snap, and why Curran was a healthy scratch. I think he’s definitely capable of giving up 7 pressures in 35 dropbacks
So, we could be looking at a 0-0 halftime score this Sunday! Were I gambler, I’d be tempted to take the under of 0.5.
I think Lock will be out there in the next 2 weeks

Does Geno have the arm to throw downfield with consistent success? If he did, it seems like we’d know by now.
Sure, but there is also the play where he threw an interception (not on a trick play) that was negated by penalty. Can Geno physically throw a deep ball? Yes, he did all the time at WVU iirc. Yeah, it was a 1:1 for Geno. Saved by the penalty, hurt by the penalty.

The one they completed was botched by an illegal man downfield.

I want Geno to open up, too. But can he under any circumstances? I’m skeptical. No one can spin straw into gold...
