An unfortunate side effect of Horton's good play could mean he becomes important to have on offense so much he actually makes them keep Sims instead of replacing him. I'm excited by his play regardless.

Maybe Tyreke Smith can be our Kyle Van Noy.

NFL side news. Injuries happening. Chargers OT Slater out for the season. And “closer” to home (thank you Colts), Richardson out in first qtr tonight with a hand injury. So glad JS doesn’t listen to Cowboy what’s his face NFL pundit.

Very unfortunate news for Slater.

Probably special teams

When asked by a reporter why he spent one third of every practice on STs, the Dog Father, Don James answered " because it's one third of the game." He also mentioned that STs had the most potential for game changing plays..

I firmly believe that if our new ST coache's last name wasn't Harbaugh, Izzo would still be here. A short leash is appropriate!

Definitely important and Izzo probably did deserve to stay. Harbaugh could also become a top tier ST coordinator.

I still don't understand why a lot of people say Jay Harbaugh was a nepotism hire... his dad and his uncle coach for other teams. How does that make sense?

Seaside Joe's avatar

I don’t think his nepotism is any different than Kubiak? Just coaches who were born into coaching families and pursued coaching. Of course they got their opportunities because of their families. They could also be deserving.

My guess is that Sims is not the returner. They have other options that can add value in more ways. But that's a guess. Sims would need to be head and shoulders better than any other option for them to keep a dedicated returner IMO, and I don't think that's the case.

I thought they would keep Izzo (nothing against Harbough) as he did a great job in 2023, but Mike probably had his reasons why he didn't. In a results business, Izzo had the results, so it's a little perplexing. They were 6th overall that year, Dickson was 5th, Love was 1st with 13 tackles, and Myers kicked 35/42 FG's. Harbough has some work to do to beat that.

I don't think it was MM's choice. I sense Izzo had more loyalty to Pete than to the Seattle franchise.

It's not like the NFL doesn't realize what he is, Hence he got a job almost immediately.

Blaming a coach for scheme is one thing, blaming them for players losing the ball seems a bit much.

I can teach my dog not to go in the house, but if he has an accident I don't think its my fault.

Did you fail to open the door…. :-)

Doggy door. His fault. :)

You know just had to post. I figured you did have. Just too good to pass up.

Personally, I don't think of EDGE as a separate position group from the DT's. I mean, I know that some players can only play EDGE and others can move back and forth. The great ones always seem to be capable of playing both, and DeMarcus Lawrence is one of those guys, and since the closest comp I have for Hall is DeMarcus Lawrence, we could have two very stout against the run but still capable of 9 to 15 sacks guys. Both are huge leader types, too. As are almost every member of our team.

It seems to me that John Schneider has gone all in on drafting high intelligence leader type players. It is amazing to me he has had such success finding elite athletes as well, but it seems like he has. And since he started prioritizing high intelligence/leader type players, it has worked so well, he keeps doing it. Leonard Williams, Reed, and Murphy, with D. Lawrence and Hall on the outside, I think our front 5 are one of the best run stopping/pass rushing groups in the NFL. I don't see a weak link unless there are injuries.

Randall Murray's avatar

Yeah they also say OLB. These guys are not LBs. Why I say we run a 5-2. Not 3-4. Ucheena and Hall etc are not OLBs. They are not KJ Wright stop run and pass LBs.

If Harbaugh is going to be evaluated, he should probably be compared to his predecessor, Larry Izzo, as well. Izzo being fired still pisses me off, the guy is a great ST coordinator IMO.

Guy plays 20 years and only position was Special Team player. Never started a game at “LB”. Means something when not a P K or LS.
