Jadeveon Clowney-Seahawks reunion would make sense now: Mike Macdonald film study
All-22 Film Study of Mike Macdonald's defense and what it means for Seahawks: Seaside Joe 1799
They say that football is a game of inches, but in Mike Macdonald’s defense it might be more accurate to say that it is a game of split-seconds. Specifically, the time it takes for a quarterback to read a defense and the slight hesitation that Macdonald’s multiple, disguised coverages creates, allowing the pass rushers—whether they are linebackers, ends, or in many cases cornerbacks—more time to get to the passer while he’s holding the ball.
I’ve spent over a year of daily studying trying to get better at understanding Xs and Os and in less than an hour of watching a breakdown of Macdonald’s defense with the 2022-2023 Baltimore Ravens I’m reminded of the opening line to MTV’s Diary…
Actually, that’s an apt description of how quarterbacks feel when they snap the ball and see that actually Jadeveon Clowney is a DB and the cornerback is 0.5 seconds from stripping the ball out of your hands…”You think you know, but you have no idea.”
As noted, I challenge myself to spend at least 10 minutes a day watching football film study to learn more about the game (same non-negotiable daily habit as this newsletter) and that’s how I came across All_22_Films on YouTube last year. I don’t know his experience or even his name, but his breakdowns are as good as anyone I know of and even though he’s mostly a Ravens-based channel, he’s covered other teams, including his admiration in the past for Seahawks players like Riq Woolen, Boye Mafe, and Devon Witherspoon that I’ve shared on Seaside Joe before.
All_22 created a Mike Macdonald explainer video this week that premiered on Friday night and I’ll share my takeaways, but won’t add GIFs or go too in-depth because he deserves the click of every Seahawks fan who is interested in learning more about the scheme they are getting from Seattle’s new head coach.
