This is a classic Seahawks free agent pick, low risk high potential reward. Bob’s point is a good one, with a lot of 2-te (or 2-rb) sets having a few players like this can be useful to mix and match
Another interesting statistical note - after being traded to NOLA, he transitioned for 2 games and then averaged over 70% of snaps for his last 6 games. Only 13 catches in those games, but Klint was playing him a lot, so you would assume he was blocking and stretching the defense with his speed.
Certainly looks like a #3 receiver at best. Maybe #4, if Fant’s role increases (and Barner in yr 2?), considering that the Saints’ #1 and #3 receivers last year were tight ends, with Kamara at #2. Add a rookie flyer to the mix, and we’re good?
Agreed WR3 but doesn’t mean 3rd in pecking order. K9 or Charbo and Fant above him in passes thrown too. JSN by a mile. Then I’m thinking Fant (DK partial replacement) then RBs then rookie then MVS.
Hope springs eternal with Fant. Maybe this will be the year.
A lot of 400-500 yd receivers in NOLA last year, and he certainly fits that mold. But if we’re getting more receiving from the backs, and a mystery #2 shows up, and we actually want to run the ball more, a recipe for success starts to come into view?
Here’s a scenario -
- Darnold/Klint aren’t pass happy like Geno/Grubb, so instead of 4300 yds it’s more like a Stroud year, 3700
- JSN gets 1200 (easily, right?)
- mystery receiver #2 goes for 800
- Fant gets his normal 500
- K9 and Charb had 640 last year - let’s say they get to 700 (conservatively)
- that leaves the last 500 for MVS, Barner, Bobo, McIntosh, TE#3, WR4&5, etc.
Thoughts on those assumptions? Seems like there’s upside for several guys (although the downshift in the passing offense pushes against higher individual numbers compared to last year). We’re still short one key player, WR2, plus we’ll likely add some rookie depth at WR3-5 along with MVS.
Agree and why I posted that MVS doesn’t move needle. Hes a needed locker room body. Upgrade over Bobo in one way. It’s a little hard to know specifically about Coach K but considering NO and his days with the Whiners, and stats at Vikes, I would not be surprised Fant is #2. Switch WR 2 and Fant in your scenario. Totally agree about more run game/RB participation (dump passes like pitches to RB). Coach K TEs tops at NO out of necessity. Olave likely 1500 plus receiver if not injured. But at Minnesota, Tyler Conklin (do you even know of him??) basically tied with Thielen as #2. Jefferson over 100 receptions 1600 yards (Olave was going to be like that). JSN I think a little less, like you note. #2 was tie as noted. #3 WR 50 receptions. Then the 2 RBs and FB. So I think your darn close but to me Fant is #2 short of surprise.
That makes sense. And assuming we have 2 TEs on the field a lot, you could see Fant plus Barner or someone else pushing 1000 between them. I’m hopeful for Barner in year 2. And also, I keep thinking, it’s nice to plan for more run focus + RB participation overall, but we have to succeed with that for everything else to happen.
I was not particularly happy with that pick, but oh he’s a keeper. Like we saw out of Dissly but better. Fant plays out the year. Barnes #1 TE next year and we get a comp pick for Fant following draft. I like what we’ve got. And no DK demanding the ball, hopefully more a “team” of guys. Cohesive unit. Darnold could do well if everyone is on same page.
Classic Speed At 3 guy with the size to play outside, plenty of experience with quality coaches and QBs, reasonable price and lessens an acute positional need. Happy camper over here.
Low risk signing. Maybe he works out, maybe he doesn't. Having people in the WR room that speaks Kubiaks language is probably the biggest benefit of bringing him in.
Whenever we sign someone I don't know much about, I like to go to their old team's fan pages and see how upset they are about it. Mixed bag with Marquez. Some Saints (and Pack/Chiefs/Bills) fans call him butterfingers at the worst possible times and others say he's money in the playoffs.
He plugs a hole in the roster and at a low cost. That better allows us to draft BPA rather than need, so I'm fine with the signing.
Weird stat line last year - almost 22 yds/reception (wow!), 43% catch rate (what?). That averages out to 9.3 yds/target - DK was 9.2, on a lot more balls, with a 60% catch rate (and we complained about his drops!)
C'mon guys. Is this anyone had on their list, even SSJ? This is a receiver 0% of the NFL fan bases would be excited about, as any sort of difference-maker.
He's a below-average receiver, and we know this bc he can be acquired on Day 3 of FA for "up-to" $5.5m.
Fair point. I shouldn't have an opinion on this guy because I know very little about talent evaluation (especially for receivers) but he does look like he's fast, tall and can create separation, which I can appreciate. That said, I thought the guy we just traded away was a burden to our offense so I might be seeing things a little optimistically. If he drops passes then I'm sure I will quickly sour on him too. Would rather have someone like Bobo (or Kearse since SSJ mentioned him) who might not be the fastest guy in the world but has good hands.
He's not a difference maker, that's like the entire point. It's a role player brought in on role player money.
What it is, is finding a player that fills a need to bolster the WR room at #3, has proven chops when linked with our OC, and at a team friendly rate.
It is not a splashy "look at our new superstar" FA signing. Honestly it's a better move than if we'd signed Diggs at $15mil guaranteed or something, even if that *looks* more aggressive with name recognition.
JS seems pretty clear this isn't an all-in push year. He's going after team positive deals, I imagine with an eye towards getting some of those 2026 necessary extensions done with minimal fuss. Filling out a roster that's needed to put together a solid progression season, hoping to buy low and strike gold.
A little frustrating when we'd hoped for some more aggressive moves, including myself here who eyed a range of FAs we'd benefit from and thus far have signed none of. But there's something nice about not making the bad choices of long term bad teams (see the Texans, Panthers for example who've definitely made bad moves so far - and it remains to be seen if the Bears plan bears fruit or ends in a grizzly mess with more polar periods of underperformance)
Yeah “a little frustrating” is me right now. Guess there’s a master plan hiding somewhere that once it unfolds will be joyous.
Thought the Russell trade with those draft picks and players included was the reset. Even though Harris and Lock (and Fant?) were fools gold, we do have some real gems still on rookie contracts (Cross, Lucas, Spoon, JSN, Walker, Charbs, Mafe, Hall, Bobo) and I had always thought 2025 was the year we’d pull it all together before that whole crowd needs their 2nd contracts. So 2025 would be our first true deep playoffs push.
And got even more excited about that when I saw our 2025 schedule.
Instead, it looks like we’re going the value route. Not making mistakes but not solving problems either. A little frustrating indeed (although there is still time…and we’ve got a stash of good draft picks…)
Brings me to Roosevelt’s famous “Dare Mighty Things” speech, and this excerpt:
"Far better it is to dare mighty things, to win glorious triumphs, even though checkered by failure, than to rank with those poor spirits who neither enjoy nor suffer much, because they live in the gray twilight that knows not victory nor defeat."
With a new OC, I’m not thinking about who gets who’s targets. I’m thinking about how the players will get plugged into the new scheme. The striking thing to me was that the top three receivers on the Saints were two TEs and Kamara (RB). Kubiak might be pestering John more about TEs than WRs. Today, Fant is our top receiving TE, so he could get a bigger role than he’s had so far as a Seahawk.
That’s my point except you’re off on one point and who the top receivers were. Olave was top receiver by far until he got hurt. But yes he likes motion and JSN fits Coach K mold. Then you have the RBs (Charbo I think better Receiver but K9 more like Kamara). And Coach K loves TEs thus why I see Fant as the DK non-deep replacement. Had Olave not been hurt he would have likely doubled receptions of #2.
Going with a guy Kubiak likes is a good move. I wanted a WR3 from free agency and a WR2 from the draft. This looks like a decent WR3 free agency pick up. Kubiak is probably going to go with fewer 3 and 4 WR formations due to his preference for 2 RB and 2 TE formations. Looks like Bobo and Dereke Young are WR4 and 5. Getting a WR with speed in the draft might be nice. From media interviews with the Ohio State WR, he is a big Seahawks fan. He also looks like a real refined route runner. But will he be there at 50 or 52? The guy whose film I liked was Burden. He is always looking for YAC, and is built like a RB. Good hands and really goes after the ball. He will also not likely make it to 50 or 52.
Thanks, I’m trying to look at tiers. Like who would you take at WR at 18, who at 50 or 52, and who at 82 or 92. And doing this for edge, O-line, QB, CB, S, IDL. It’s just a fun exercise. In a few days we should have a good picture of where the holes are on the position roster. I felt EDGE was a big hole, but if their plan is keeping Nwosu, edge is a lower priority. Likewise if they sign Tevon Jenkins at guard, IOL is not as big a need. If Kupp is signed, WR is a lower priority. The Vikings are about to release their center (Bradbury). He’s not Dalman, but has a higher floor than Olu and Sundell.
I use PFF, pro football network, and the NFL mock draft database. But I don’t so much as do the mocks myself as look at how the simulators play out the selections for the teams before the Seahawks pick at 18, then stop it again at 50 to see who’s available to the Seahawks, etc. I usually only do the first 3 rounds. I eliminate the players who come off the board and then look at the top players available when it’s the Seahawks turn to pick.
I get that there’s so much variance in people’s big boards, but I look over all the big boards that have recently come out as long as they have at least the top 100. Some big boards only do a top 50, some 100, and some have 300 or more players and are sortable by position. Pro days are about to start happening, and that’s the last piece of info to adjust these big boards. The positions should become more set in the next couple of weeks. I subscribe to the Athletic and will have Dane Brugler’s the Beast in early April. He did a top 100 after the combine. WalterFootball just came out with their revised top 100, and PFF has a revised big board quite frequently.
I also try to keep up with which of the players available at 50,52, 82 and 92 went to the senior bowl or who met with the Seahawks at the combine. The top 30 visits are beginning to happen and it’s worth noting who visits. Fieldgulls often has a good tracker of these lists, but others are kind enough to keep rack of these meetings. It’s all probably fruitless, although i did have Murphy as one of 2 possible selections at 16 last year. The Illinois DT was the other, and I felt they would take one of those players or trade back since they had no 2nd round pick. SSJ did a live chat for the first round of the draft, and that was a fun time. It might be fun to do a day 2 live chat this year since the hawks have 4 picks in rounds 2 and 3 and that day will most likely determine the success of this year’s draft.
Are you feeling good about this year? I feel picking up Tank Lawrence from the cowboys at his age means MM and JS do not see this as a rebuilding year. Despite not spending $90 million on Fries, they are all in and believe this is a playoff team that will compete. I think the defense will be top 10, and i think the O-line will be much better and the offense will be balanced and improve on last year as well. 12 wins and the division title are a distinct possibility. Although i do look at the Seahawks through rose colored glasses. I have more fun being positive about the team vs focusing on the negatives. I believe they are doing everything they can to fix the O-line without recklessly making poor decisions just to say, look, we did something big, like spend $90 million on Fries even though he hasn’t played well enough to warrant anywhere near that. There’s over 5 months before week 1. Plenty of time to get the O-line right. Missing out on Dalman and Fries does not assure the line won’t be substantially better. Paying $90 million and guaranteeing $50 plus to a player with serious questions about his actual value could actually damage the success of the team going forward. I’m fine passing on that opportunity.
...believe they are doing everything they can to fix the O-line without recklessly making poor decisions just to say, look, we did something big, like spend $90 million...
Couldn't agree more...and also I like to TRY and focus on the positive side, it allows for more enjoyment. Hoping JS rights the ship. In John we trust.
Jenkins is coming for a visit on Monday. My guess is due to his injury history, they want to have him see the team doctor. Also, no way he travels 2000 miles unless they are close on the numbers. If he passes the physical and does well speaking with the coaches, He’ll be inked and giving a press conference on Tuesday.
Can we draft Keandre Lambert-Smith, really make Raible earn his money?
JSN MVS KLS

Classic Speed At 3 guy with the size to play outside, plenty of experience with quality coaches and QBs, reasonable price and lessens an acute positional need. Happy camper over here.
Thanks for super quick update! I'm checking hourly this time of year for solid talent upgrade that JS constantly struggles to deliver.
SJ, why are two receivers in the draft likely necessary? Depth? 2026 - future development?
I like MVS' veteran savvy in the team mix and esp his YAC. YAC is so effing hot.
Low risk signing. Maybe he works out, maybe he doesn't. Having people in the WR room that speaks Kubiaks language is probably the biggest benefit of bringing him in.
All about rebuilding the WR room and continuing to build in the draft.
3 seasons with YPC of 20+
Lots of cardio this offseason MVS... hope you like 9 routes.

Solidly behind this analysis up front…
…reluctantly behind the puns at the end 😒
My memory is telling me he drops way too many passes. I'll be surprised if this works out.
The Saints’ receiving stats (yards) are weird:
Johnson (TE) - 548
Kamara (RB) - 543
Moreau (TE) - 413
Olave (WR) - 400
MVS (WR) - 385
Shaheed (WR) -349
“Though MVS was the number two wide receiver, he finished the season just 15 yards behind Olave.” 😎
My takeaway is that Kubiak spreads the passes around, relying on scheme, rather than a superstar receiver.
Also note that MVS is tall. Kubiak probably likes MVS for his downfield run blocking.
Excellent, low key signing, given the context.
Nice research!
This was feeling like a lockett replacement until the call out about blocking. That actually makes a really big difference in value
MVS only played in 8 games, I believe. Had 4 TDs, So he’s a TD machine compared to DK :) Also 385 over 8 games translates to over 700 for 16 games.
Great point about blocking.
The stats also tell me that Fant will get more targets.
Why I said I can see Fant replacing DK short and intermediate routes. Not deep but MVS I guess could do that.
Savion Williams...might be a good fit later than 50-52 even.

JS has been typically filling most holes before the drafts so he has the flexibility to go BPA...so I bet it'll be similar this year.
