I'm curious which, if any of you, were aware of Johnathan Hankins on a significant level in the last 11 years. I mean, I've always known about Hankins, but never paid any attention to what he was doing or how he was doing, and probably often got him confused with Snacks Harrison.
Only because he was a freaking Buckeye and therefore any enemy player. I had forgotten about him though in the NFL. I am not expecting a lot from him this year.
I remember him from the Giants, but lost track of him until he joined the Cowboys. Solid player. He might only play 20-30 snaps per game, and if so, that's probably a good sign for our defense.
I’d never heard of Hankins. (But then before last season, I’d never heard of Michael Pierce either.) When he signed, I thought “Al Woods”and filed him away under “useful depth if he survives camp.”* Basically, Hankins seemed like a hedge in case Cameron Young didn’t progress. But when Adrian Durde was excited about getting him, I wondered whether there was more to Hankins than met my eye. After reading SSJ, I’m convinced of that.
* Also, I chalked Hankins up to Schneider’s weird obsession with the 2013 draft class. BTW, looks like there are only *four* active players from the first round of that draft and 29 total active players. Hankins probably should have gone in the first round.
I think you’re absolutely right about Hankins, he’s been a forgotten player! I really hope he’s got enough left in the tank to help us meet some really critical rotational requirements over the 17 game season. You definitely need more than even four or five of those big gentlemen, so it would be great if Hankins could provide us with a significant number of real quality downs; quality play on between 25%-40% of the defensive downs would be awesome 😎
The dynamic between fan and players can only improve when I take time to try to know all these guys, especially the trench giants. Instead of just another whistle-stop, maybe they settle in among us and we all grow.
I'd be worried if I were J Reed....dead money vs cap savings. Reed and D Taylor could be easy to move on from. Hankins looks the part of the 'vet D-line signing' consistent with Seattle roster building through JS. I hope he's healthy and plays well, we could use his big body to set the tone on the run stops. I was not aware of the JH online presence, but I am not one who typically cares about that kind of stuff - so grain of salt and whatnot....
If DT makes the team I'll be mad. Not because he finally showed what he's capable of doing, but because of the time he's wasted underperforming his athletic ability. I'm not expecting him to make the cut, as he's had ample time to show the consistency and dedication needed to perform at the NFL level, so why would he show up now? Maybe the lack of interest from other teams is a bit of a wake up call for him, who knows.
Taylor is not a good run defender, which doesn’t mean that he can’t be useful as a rotational pass rusher. If he makes the team, it will be because MM etc believe that he can be put to good use.
I don’t have the capacity to judge a player’s effort—his coaches and teammates are best for that. Outside of social media, I’ve never heard anyone question Taylor’s effort.
What I’m pretty sure of is that the Hawks moved on from PC in large part because the defense had underperformed. To the extent that the problem was coaching, I’m not setting in stone an opinion about any of the defensive players.
I thought Reed played pretty well last year and I'm hoping with MacDonald he plays even better this year. I do wonder if they'll keep him at NT or move him over to a DT position.
The way they've been talking about him sounds like he's mostly a 3-technique, but he'll be moving around quite a bit. Hankins would likely be the nose on 1st and 2nd downs mostly, but it sounds like they'll be moving everyone around quite a bit.

No doubt, but if his effort is not consistent, I don't see any way they keep him.

That reminds me of that "House of Tomorrow" cartoon I saw on Looney Tunes as a kid.
Speaking of Looney Tunes, anyone remember those Bosco cartoons? I can't believe they actually aired those.
I like a guy who likes to stuff runs - unglamorous but so necessary. The depth of experience and good attitude seem promising if properly deployed.
He can earn a spot with good to better play- That would be great since they have limited options of a true NT type guy!
