Agree that you can’t fix a problem by throwing money at it. But underinvestment is also a recipe for failure. Schneider’s so-called “value” approach to signing free agent offensive lineman has amounted to a colossal waste in its own right.
The *idea* of building an interior OL with third-round and Day 3 picks augmented by free agent depth is legitimate as long as you draft well. When you don’t, the QB and RBs are stuck depending on the likes of Bradley F. Sowell, J’Marcus F. Webb, and Austin F. Blythe. When the draft part of the plan fails—which it has—the approach to free agency must be adjusted accordingly. We see what Grubb, Geno and the RBs get when it is not.
I'm just thinking of the Texans at the moment. Lots of fanfare with a new defensive-oriented HC, young gun and one of the hottest names in the market. And some of the best draft pick positions you're ever going to get, end up with CJ Stroud AND Will Anderson, in theory anyway the anchors for both the offense and the defense. And a bunch of young talent on both sides of the ball. Best of all, playing in one of the worst divisions in football.
Which is why they are going to the playoffs again this year.
But, how do you feel if you're a Texans fan after watching that game last night, getting literally blown off the field by the Ravens, 31-2?? You've followed the playbook, drafted a franchise QB, drafted a franchise edge, hired the best coach available, etc etc. Now what??
If I'm a Texans fan, I'm crossing all my fingers and toes that CJ Stroud learned a lot this season and will step forward to join the NFL's elite passers. The window to benefit from all those nice draft picks and young talent is only open for a couple more years, and if Stroud doesn't play a lot better the rest won't matter much.
“The Seahawks could have drafted an offensive lineman instead of Byron Murphy II.”
They could have drafted O’Cyrus Torrence instead of Zach Charbonnet. For that matter, they could have drafted Cam Jurgens instead of Kenneth Walker III. Walker should be one of the top RBs in the league; give the failure and lack of effort to build a consequential IOL, he’s shaping up as a wasted pick through no fault of his own.
There’s no reason to think that Schneider can put a decent IOL on the field. There’s no reason to give it time because he has had time. Aren’t Russell Okung and Justin Britt are the only Pro Bowlers that Schneider has drafted (and Britt was something like a fourth choice third-team alternate)?
I have said this consistently, no sacred cows… IF you can trade DK for a second round pick or someone like Wilson. Do it. He drops too many passes, doesn’t run clean routes, has lots of penalties and fumbles. Yes, he is an athletic freak, but the reality has not lived up to potential.
I don’t hate Geno or think he “sucks”. But he has way too many INTs and makes them at the worst time. If you can keep him on his current contract, fine. But he should not be extended. Even if we are worse short term, it forces the issue.
We all agree OL needs to be addressed. Eliminate bad contracts and read cap spending. This means Lockett, Jones, Nwosu and Fant are gone. It also means we have money to resign our young guys who deserve to get paid, and (please for the love of god) sign an OL who is top half of the league.
The D is close to what we expect. The O needs to be changed.
Let’s beat the Bears tomorrow night! Soldier Field in December is not an easy place to play regardless of their current trajectory but we should do it. And even more importantly, go Cardinals!
Hasselback to Housh was pretty frustrating. When Housh was signed as a free agent the expectation was he would dominate with Hass feeding him but that did not work out at all.
As for tomorrow… I hope everyone’s Christmas dinner is well-digested because I see a tight game va the Bears that might not go the Seahawks way.
As usual, to win Geno has to be 4 quarters “good Geno” and we have not seen much of that this year. Despite the final score the Bears were scrappy vs the Lions last week and they will push hard for a win at home to break their streak.
If the Bears players are excited with the possibility of Pete coming to coach them, we may see a whole lot of extra effort put out to get on film showing what they can really do. Or maybe they beat the crap out of each other in the Lions game and have little left in the tank.
Yah, I'm with you. I actually have a gut feeling they're going to lose, that the Bears say "enough" and put their foot down. Of course, I do hope I'm wrong!
Geno has one more year left on his contract so there is time to figure out the QB situation. Once we get rid of all the dead weight, including Geno, we will have enough cap space to fix the Oline. Texas QB Ewers should be available to draft and I think he'll be better than Ward or Sanders.
This year pretty much showed the new staff who to hold and who to cut so it was a valuable lesson in team building. I remember in Pete's early year they made so many personel changes you literally had to have a new weekly score card to know who's who. Why should this year be any different?
Also, most new HCs want to have their own QB. so letting Geno go should be no surprise.
Big changes are coming. We just have to hope they work out as well as the ones Pete made !
Ewers is an interesting target. One would think his draft stock has fallen and that a team could take him without feeling the pressure of starting him in year one. This could be a good dart for JS to throw.

Turnover +/- improvement was the one thing I thought would improve most this year. Shows what I know.

Merry Christmas, everyone!

Oh no. I’ve just lost respect for Seaside Jay. Surely you’re not a Swifty 😨.
I stand in support of Seaside Jay! Taylor's the best Swift in all of football!
Taima the augur hawk is the best !

The Legion of Boom didn't happen overnight.
Isn't he returning to school for one more year,?

I'm wondering how playing after facing the Lions will affect performances?
