Yes. I'm not worried about the offense. They will suck, that's expected, I just hope some creative play calling makes them suck less.

The defense should be better set. I get waiving KJ to develop Brooks, but we released Bwagz to do what? He would play on discount and allow for better development. As much as I liked Woolen and Bryant, will they have any development when teams simply run throughout our porous second level not testing them at all?

I never thought we had a top 5 defense, but we could stop the run. I hope it's all in the vanilla play calling. Still the point is 2023, we might have to suffer in order to gain. I like Pete want to see big effort and very little mental errors. Come on Drew I hope you can gain all your strength back for the Cowboys. Sometimes it helps being a tad under the weather. It can stop over trying. I am in the camp that wants to see passes downfield even if there are some pics. A 45 yard pass that is intercepted on 3rd and 10 isn't bad if we make the tackle

Sometimes it helps being a tad under the weather.

See Jordan's "flu game" or how Farve did after his father passed! I don't think that holds true generally, but ya never know.

This is totally different in that our new QB1 solidified his position as QB1 by not playing because the other guys are so obviously bad. Ah well. It's okay to suck some years.

We have to hope we land Jimmy G or trade for someone else to have any chance at respectability this season. I'm pissed we didn't trade a conditional 5th or whatever it was for Baker. I watched his one series against the Washington Football team and even with fumbling a snap he moved the ball downfield, stepped up in the pocket, and remained calm. He isn't good but he can play the position. Geno cannot play. If Lock were that much better, he'd have moved up the depth chart by now. You put it well in a recent newsletter that football at the NFL level is an individual sport with a supporting cast. We have neither the individual skill player nor the supporting cast right now.

We can't catch or pass on offense, and successful running is going to be dependent on some amount of passing. We can't tackle or cover receivers. Even the special teams I thought might be a bright spot was somewhere between bad and horrible. Kick/punt coverage was shoddy and Jason Meyers is not looking worth a 5th of his salary. Dickson seemed to have a dead leg by the 3rd quarter and didn't have the pop on the ball we expect. We looked like the football version of the Washington Generals out there.

I know it's preseason and there's no reason to overreact, but this feels like it's going to be a long season. Every positive was negated by a negative. So many young guys I was excited to see would shine and then screw up royally. For every great blocking play by the rookie tackles there was a penalty. We looked undertalented and poorly coached. There were plays that were so bad I heard yakkety sax in my head.

I'm glad the Seahawks haven't traded a 5th rounder (or any pick at all) for Mayfield, Garoppolo, etc. I've accepted that we'll probably not be competitive this season. Why trade real resources for a guy who's not going to be a true difference maker? I'd prefer to accept a down year.

I've been more pessimistic (or realistic) than most about our record. I've not one time this off season, even for a moment, felt that this team had any chance to make the playoffs. I've seen our ceiling at 7 wins and our floor at maybe 2. That's consistent with what we've seen so far. If Lock is better than we imagine, which I still think is a possibility, well then maybe we'll be closer to 7, or if everything breaks our way, maybe we win another game or two. At 9 wins, we could make the playoffs. I'm not holding my breath. I'm fine with 2 wins.

We won't be trading for Jimmy G; I'd wager on that. And in a perfect world we'd have our middling QB for 2 seasons so our drafted QB next year can sit behind him if they aren't ready right out of their first camp. So really Baker, Jimmy, etc would only help for this year. There's no evidence that tanking works in the NFL, and it's against everything that Pete preaches so I'm certain that we're going to try to win every game. It just strikes me that the best way to do that is to have a more competent QB than is currently on the roster. Maybe Drew Lock is better than I think he is. I hope so. Pete said Covid had hit him pretty hard. Fingers crossed he's ready to go next Friday or it's got to be the Geno show to start the season.

I'm fine with doing our best to win every game so long as we don't mortgage the future for a QB who's not a significant upgrade. With Garappolo about to be cut, and his salary at $25M, I think it would be foolish to trade for him. If the Browns or Dolphins or whomever get him, so be it. It's late for him to learn our offense anyway.

No one is paying Jimmy G 25 mil this season. I suspect the reason he hasn't been released yet is because the 49ers don't want us to sign him. At this point, I'm not sure we'd kick the tires on him if he would play for 5 million. It's too bad for him -hard to catch on with a new team at this point.

I’m rather hopeful that at least of our defensive woes are the switch to a 3 - 4 front, because at least that should improve with time. That doesn’t excuse the inept tackling, unless the players have been told to not do anything that risks injury. I mean, there’s really no point, right? Why would you go full bore in a preseason game - you’ve just funded the season in 20 games otherwise. I get why those down the depth chart would - they are trying to make the team of course - but those near the top? I don’t know, I guess I’m just fishing for answers because whilst it was clear the quarter backing would be worse, I was really expecting the defense to take a step up. Time, as it always does, will tell.

The good news is that the first half schedule should be a little easier than the second half AND the Seahawks should be a better team after November than in September and October.

Couldn't be more on board with your assessment. Yes, our team is probably going to suck. Really really suck. That's okay. This year, we have a free pass to suck. That's the nature of rebuilding. I'm glad we're doing it.

We appear to have an excellent draft class. We're making up for a whole bunch of terrible drafts. I think we'll need another great class (maybe two) and some time for development before the Hawks shine again. We'll also need some luck, as the draft is uncertain, especially in the realm of QB.

A friend of mine recently said, “well Geno played pretty well in his few starts last year.” I corrected him because of course this Joe knows better than that. But that’s the narrative for some reason.

I don't understand why so many people believe that Geno "played pretty well" last year. Did they watch different games than I did? Did they not watch the games at all and are just feeding on stats? It's like I live in a totally different reality. Am I a multiverse traveling warrior on a quest to save the universe from an evil that I unwittingly created.

Just as good as Abe Lucas looked in your video example is just as bad as Gabe Jackson looked on the same play. His feet are way too slow off the snap, his head is too low and his eyes are looking down...DOWN....ugh. And if one really wants to nit-pick it further, he started with his arms extended nicely but then he drops them. Why does he drop them? Well because his feet were slow, his head was too low and he was playing catch-up to a D-lineman that had already read the play direction.

The offensive line looks like it may be really good if it continues to develop. That's something, especially since the running backs room is deeper than it has been. The top 2 WRs are really good.

The defense has young talent and a revamped coaching staff with reputations as up and coming, bright minds and good communicators.

These are things that could change, of course. If the D doesn't adapt or improve, or if the signs of OL hope are a mirage, then it could truly be as bad as it looks. But this season is more about fact-finding (who can play and who can coach under duress) than it is about Ws.

I was at the game and left thinking we may have a new QB controversy- between Eason and Smith to be the backup to Lock. I know Eason was playing against 4th teamers, but he could at least throw a 30 yard pass that had some zip.

Expand full comment

He had some bad, bad passes too though. From watching on TV it looked like every pass was a fastball. I just didn't see any touch. As much as I wish otherwise, I think he's the longest of long shots to make the roster.

Eason has no touch and also can struggle with reads.

He has a cannon and athleticism though.

It generally takes a year or two to reorient a defense from 4-3 to 3-4. This is par for the course.

I think this draft speaks for itself. We hauled in a ton of talent. I think this will be our best draft since 2010. Mafe is gonna be really good. Would he be better in a 4-3? Maybe. I think he'll be fine. Lack of a nose guard? Maybe. I don't expect the Hawks to be good this year. A rebuild takes two or three years and it takes really good drafts (like the one we just had).

It's not argumentative to have different opinions. We can disagree without being disagreeable.

So, with that, I disagree. Cross needs to learn the snap counts but his pass blocking has been awesome and his run blocking has been far ahead of what anyone expected. Lucas looks extremely promising. Have you seen the pancake blocks he's been dishing out? He's made mistakes of course but he's far ahead of schedule and I'd not be at all surprised if we wound up with rookie bookend tackles starting.

Mafe has looked great in pass rushing. More of a work in progress against the run but that was to be expected. He wasn't a top 15 pick. It's a shame that Walker is injured but he should be back soon and, once again, he looks more than promising. Our corners are not quite ready for prime time but, man, they are making huge strides. Bryant is just learning to work as a slot corner and he looks great much of the time. Woolen has shown incredible flashes.

Melton and Young are clearly works in progress. It's not clear if any of them will make the cut to 53. But they were 7th rounders. Vi Jones is an undrafted free agent and he looks promising. All of these guys show real promise.

If a team scores two or three starters in a draft, that's good. If any of them are pro bowlers, that's awesome. I'd not be surprised if any of our top five picks this year became starters during this season. It's impossible to predict pro bowl potential but both Cross and Walker appear to have it.

Of course it's too soon to count our chickens but things are looking super positive.
