I don’t know whether fully guaranteeing Emmanwori was smart or not. What it tells me is that Seattle *really* wants him to be in camp from the get-go because the coaching staff has specific plans and wants to put him on the field starting Week 1.

Wouldn't it be nice if Murphy, Knight, Zabel, Emmanwori, Arroyo, and Milroe become new version of Wilson, Wagner, Thomas, Bam-Bam, and Sherman. Not the same people, but the same impact. We need those young, anchor, long-term players. Spoon is already in that mix, as is JSN. If some of the new guys are players, we're in business.

Looking forward to the preseason more than usual. We'll see a lot of Milroe I expect, which will be fun. Probably a lot of MacIntosh and Martinez at RB as well. Kubiak will of course keep everything vanilla, as will most of the other OC's and DC's, and will focus on repping a handful of fundamentals, so the o-line can get assessed.

WR's will be evaluated as much on their blocking as their pass catching.

Camp starts in 3 days. Awesome!

Looks like he did the sliding scale thing I mentioned in the last article... he established that the cutoff point for fully guaranteed contracts is now somewhere in the middle of the 2nd rd. If he had guaranteed both, it would have meant someone else would have had to establish where the fully guaranteed contracts would stop (after pick 50 somewhere), and it could have been pick 3.1 being the 1st non-guarantee if everyone else in the 2nd rd had signed their picks to fully guaranteed contracts. So, it seems like ownership won't be upset because he established that pick 2.18 would NOT be fully guaranteed. That keeps him in good graces with owners and other GMs for future dealings. He also guaranteed part of Arroyo's contract, so he didn't go completely the opposite way and guarantee none of it, which keeps him in the good graces of agents, his players, and the union by allowing for future guarantees to be negotiable. Now, someone else has to determine where the completely non-guaranteed contracts start. He has set the baseline for fully guaranteed at somewhere between pick 2.3 and 2.18, and also allowed for partial guarantees to extend down to at least 2.18, and possibly further.

This was an absolute homerun! It was a masterclass on how to get a win-win in a situation that had larger ramifications for the entire league, players and owners. Man, that dude is an awesome human who is awesome at his job and treating people right! SO glad he is our general!

Somewhere in the depths of NFL history, we can all know exactly what percentage of second-round draft picks flush out in less than four years or otherwise disappoint, and the Salary Cap can be adjusted to account for this. I think everybody should get a fully guaranteed contract.

Think about how often a second round pick has been waived or cut from the team. None in my memories. The highest draft pick I can recall being cut was a third round pick, and I cannot actually remember who that was. It's rare to cut a third round pick, and more rare to cut a second round pick.

Amara Darboh (3R 2017) lasted one season. The rumor at the time was that the coaches knew from rookie camp that he wasn’t any good. 2017 is possibly Schneider’s worst draft class.

If Dee Eskridge was able to hang as long as he did, I’m confident we won’t get bit by Arroyo’s contract.

The pressure is now on Cleveland and Miami. We know for sure nobody after pick #50 will get a fully guaranteed contract, so maybe JS set more of a precedent than we currently understand. Next year's draft will be interesting.

I think we will all look back and not care about the money as long as the player was good. I'm not sold on Emmanwori yet and Arroyo looks more promising to me. Glad I'm not in the drivers seat. It's a tough job.

I wonder how a third and fourth year total guarantee will affect any possible extension? Probably not at all, but maybe the team will get all snotty and not want to negotiate for a full forty-eight months.

Sweet! The gang’s all signed.

I’m good with the guarantees. The NFL and the respective teams are some of the most profitable businesses anywhere. Rookies who may end up sacrificing their bodies and health deserve a slice of the pie (really more like a tiny nibble).

I don't really care about the guaranteed money, but I did kinda want JS to be the guy to break the trend, just for show.

I'd thought so, too, Grant, but we failed to consider a previous SSJ talking about JS being on the hot seat, having near-total control of the team and this being His team.

From the perspective of a guy who may be out of a job in a year or two, setting precedent for ONE MORE 2nd-round slot had MUCH less priority than not tripping up his 2nd-year head coach.

What's clear is that the Hawks intend to play Emmanwori this year.

But do give JS credit for not guaranteeing Arroyo's contract, though obviously we all hope that he earns it.

I was thinking the same thing. Seemed like he had all the leverage and precedent. Would have liked to see JS show how good he is at negotiations by getting what would have been in the best interest of the team and their salary cap moving forward. Guess he did kinda show us something by closing on the second second rounder at the same time. Oh, well. Onward, and with less drama (hopefully).
