The Seahawks hired Klint Kubiak as their next offensive coordinator. Please forgive me for writing an article about Seattleās difficult OC search as this news broke!
The 38-year-old Kubiak has been an offensive coordinator twice ā 2021 with the Vikings and 2024 with the Saints ā and he also took over play calling duties for Nathaniel Hackett in the middle of Denverās tumultuous 2022 season with Russell Wilson. In all three cases, the head coach of the team was fired.
This is probably, you know, just a coincidence of sorts. But a streak that Kubiak would like to help end with the Seahawks in 2025.
Kubiak was also Kyle Shanahanās passing game coordinator with the 49ers in 2023.
Kubiak and Shanahan do share a lot of similarities:
Kubiak was born in Houston, got his first OC job in Minnesota
Shanahan was born in Minnesota, got his first OC job in Houston
Both are sons of head coaches who won the Super Bowl with the Broncos
Both have extensive OC experience with at least 4 teams (Seattle being Kubiakās fourth)
Kubiak and Shanahan ā fathers and sons ā have worked together
The Seahawks hope that Kubiak can have the same success that Shanahan had with the Falcons and 49ers. Other than that, this move would suggest that Seattle trusts his experience and believes that Kubiakās resume, which lacks a lot of success, had more to do with his head coaches and quarterbacks than due to his own shortcomings.
The search to replace Ryan Grubb is over, but whether the Seahawks can now score enough points to win more games wonāt be known for months.
This is a good hire. He is young. He has had some success. He has some experience.
The Saints offense with Carr was pretty decent. I think he will have more talent in Seattle to work with.
He also comes in under a Head Coach with a clear plan. A more clear picture now of what he wants than a year ago.
Not sure this is as sexy as Grubb or maybe Chip Kelly or Udinski ... But he is only 38. Plays with a ton of motion. And should do a much better job of marrying run plays with play action.
Happy about the news ... Onward Hawks!
Udinski had the "young phenom" label that was exciting (especially if the idetic memory rumors were true). But, all-in-all, I prefer someone with more experience (as I have commented before), and Kubiak has that in spades. Now, we shall see. The proof is, as they say, in the pudding.
