Seahawks hire OC from the 49ers
Brian Fleury is the next person in charge of Sam Darnold's career, Seattle's offense
The Seattle Seahawks interviewed at least four internal candidates to replace Klint Kubiak as the offensive coordinator. The two interviews from coaches outside of the organization were assumed to be more like formalities, but the Seahawks took them seriously enough as Seattle is expected to hire Brian Fleury as the next offensive coordinator.
Fleury was the tight ends coach for Kyle Shanahan’s 49ers in 2025.
A college coach for the first 10 seasons of his career, Fleury moved up a level with the Bills in 2013 as a quality control coach. He has spent time on both sides of the ball and started his career for Shanahan as a defensive quality control coach in 2019.
Fleury was moved to tight ends in 2022 and added the title of run game coordinator in 2025. In 2023, he would have spent at least a little bit of adjacent time with backup quarterback Sam Darnold.
The obvious upside to the move is the interchangeability of the Shanahan and Kubiak offenses, as well as the intel of picking a coach from the 49ers who not only has some insight into one of Seattle’s division rivals but has also been part of a successful franchise run. Fleury’s tight end experience with George Kittle could come in handy with A.J. Barner and Elijah Arroyo.
His experience with the run game and Christian McCaffrey in 2025 could help aide Kenneth Walker’s next season, assuming the Seahawks are able to bring Walker back.

I can imagine the interview. MM asks, “How would you beat my defense?” When the rival’s assistant coach is the only one with the right answer, you hire him away from your rival, immediately!
I’m worried that we might lose more assistants though.
Note that Fleury and Darnold were together just a couple of years ago. I expect that Darnold confirmed his character and that he believes in his skills as a strategist. Hopefully, he folds right into the 12 as one and MOB energy.
