it's just that he lists them as both making the team as well as cut. Nothing seems to have been changed from the mail. (T Michael Jerrell, G Sataoa Laumea, WR Dareke Young)
For me, probably Rhattigan not making it. Although it gives me increased hope over my previouls increased hopes for the possibility that Drake Thomas is actually serviceable or Baker's injury is not as bad as we fear (seems weird to not have jim get any reps in a new defense he may be wearing the green dot in, though)
I see LBs mixing tasks with DBs and vice versa should minimize the demands for a deep bench? We can bet MM has identified his dream players and John will snap them up on trades throughout the year. Meantime, train hard in both disciplines. Looks to me like our athletic Big Guys can't be interchanged if you don't have the size, so keep as many as possible and demand your Asst. Coaches work miracles. Tight End trench work will be crucial in Grubb's designs when anybody but Abe is playing RT. (Hint: Forsyth) If problems arise, Geno will have to go to plays that get the ball out faster (less deep routes). I expect Mack will allow him more scrambles on 3rd downs, which makes having Howell ready to step up crucial. We won't be seeing him toss the ball away as much as Pete had him doing. On Saturday, the Big Test was to see if we can score quickly. (Playing Ketchup) Otherwise, pace the offense and let our Defense rest a bit. Unlike Pete, I hope we score and keep scoring until our 2nd Unit guys can close out games and get critical playing time.
I'm surprised both Artie Burns and DJ James were cut (especially Burns), as I thought they'd keep a backup nickel guy. Hope we can stay healthy at CB and keep hold of these guys on the PS.
Burns has a foot injury. Probably headed for the practice squad. He'll probably be called up sometime during the year. I think he's part of the usual early shuffle.
WR Dee Eskridge - probably a practice squad candidate just based on returning ability
CB Artie Burns - probably another practice squad candidate (doubtful another team will claim due to his injury)
RB George Holani - this one hurts a bit for us fans but hopefully they gambled correctly that they will be able to get him on the practice squad, he was fun to watch in preseason
T Michael Jerrell, G Sataoa Laumea, Dareke Young - according to the official Seahawks tweet they are actually on the roster, come on Joe!
OLB Nelson Ceaser, OLB Jamie Sheriff - Similar to George Holani, hopefully we can get them back on the practice squad
LB Jon Rhattigan - Cut purely due to money reasons, should be back on the practice squad
LB Michael Barrett - What was the point of trading for him? I don't see why we couldn't have just let the Panthers cut him and claim him off the waivers or sign him to the practice squad after waivers, is there some NFL rule that I'm not aware of?
For Michael Barrett: this was always likely the plan. He will likely clear waivers and land on the PS. Hoping Holani, Sheriff, DJ James and Ty Okada make it to the PS too.
Isn’t this a “who cares?” No doubt Schneider has a three-dimensional chess move in mind, but (a) those never come to anything and (b) it never matters.
I doubt that, since I'm not aware that he flashed exceptionally in preseason, maybe JS was just concerned about the possibility of the Panthers keeping him and MM saw something in him that he could develop from his time at Michigan.
After reading Condotta and understanding Artie Burns vested veteran status, I guess I understand what happened with the cornerbacks. Basically, Artie is Nick Bellore, not subject to waivers, can come back when he’s ready, easy option. So then, DJ And Boykin were left, and the question is whether they can clear waivers, which they probably can, so we kept Dee in the 53, because he has a special skill. In short, our depth at CB is on the ghost roster. Which leaves me wondering how deep we really are at CB - and also why we gave up on Mike Jackson. I feel like this season we live or die with the young guys - maybe it’s cap constraints, but the cut down decisions that were close all went with the rookies. MM is going with the new guys - when the injuries hit, things will get interesting.
I did some digging on Sheriff's competition and it turns out we were probably watching a UFL game. Like, with 1 minute left in the 2nd he got pancaked by #63 G (playing T) Zach Johnson (cut). He got his first sack in Q3 against #50 G Wyatt Davis (cut) and his second in Q4 against #69 T Lorenzo Thompson (cut). Oh and he got a nice rep after the 2-minute warning against #61 T Roy Mbaeteka (cut).
I guess the uncrowned king of holding, #65 G Germain Ifedi, might've been on the bubble. Ifedi blocked Sheriff on the first Browns TD. And yes, yes... The Browns, who carry 10 OL on their initial 53-man, also cut Ifedi.
So as far as I can tell none of the guys he played against made the roster. PS/UFL/CFL players, probably.
Surprises include keeping Jalen Sundell (3 centers) and cutting Holani (and keeping only 3 RBs). Thomas at off ball LB interesting as I don’t recall hearing much at all about him vs some of the others (ie Rhattigan but that one smartly covered already here in our 2005 set of articles, money deal). FYI need a write up on Dee Williams. Wasn’t going to keep playing after HS and now a starter. Awesome. Another surprise is no Artie. Thought his depth was enough.
I read Artie has a mystery foot injury from an unknown cause. (The tapes don't show how it happened) The hope is nobody will want to risk hiring him away from us. The 3 RB staffing tells me Mack has confidence in our O-Line opening gaps for them, rather than expect them to make thier own holes through the Big Guys. I suspect Grubb will be using our TE's and Bobo to assist in opening things up (like the Rams did to the Ravens last year). DK may even get in on the Fun. Hell, Bobo carried the ball through a hole for a TD last year, and that was in his very limited snaps. Versatility Rules!
Ok that would help explain that. Although it hasn’t been first time we’ve had on the PS, should he want to stay. But I recall a brief injury but thought he “recovered”. Totally agree regarding RB but bring a highly injured position seems odd. On the other hand, also one of the easiest positions to learn. And I was there for that Bobo run. Was awesome. And frankly if you recall, Young was used in backfield at end of his rookie season. Position versatility is likely why Dee W is on the team and Dee fragility isn’t.
Completely agree. Sort of why a certain small, slow guy set every receiving record there was. No Bobo isn’t Largent, but skills with brains can succeed. Truly hope see more like that this year.
Insofar as being "slow", watch Bobo keep pace with Kenny Mac as he ran for a TD on Saturday. Bobo was coming to block for him and actually gained on him during Mac going all-out to close on the goal line. Bobo has said in interviews he is faster than the 4.99 he ran on Pro Day. It was raining or something...
I get it. Also there is speed vs play speed. Why Largent was so good and Bobo may not by a speedster but again taking angles (brains) etc. love that about him. Why Mack Strong one of my all time favorite Hawks. Do the little things. Hass downfield blocking for Lynch. Bobo is plainly a “football” player.
Jon Rhattigan has a good chance to be re-signed tomorrow when Uchenna Nwosu goes on IR. It all will depend on whom is available on waivers from other teams.
Multiple cuts and saves ? Surprised O'Connel and Sherrif aren't on the save list here! They have both played very well in the preseason. Hopefully they can make it to at least the practice squad-
This list Dareke Young as both cut and on the 53
Same with OT Michael Jerrell
Seahawks.com also shows OG Sataoa Laumea on the 53.
He is listed on the graphic and the written list. Must've corrected it quickly
Super Sonic Joe!
it's just that he lists them as both making the team as well as cut. Nothing seems to have been changed from the mail. (T Michael Jerrell, G Sataoa Laumea, WR Dareke Young)
Sitting at the computer for 8 hours waiting for the list to drop caused me to walk away after I hit send and decompress. I apologize for the mixups.
yeoman job, KenJoe, thanks, we too have been sitting here holding our breath, waiting ...
Nothing to apologize for here. Thanks for the update!
Sitting Staring Joe. Not fun!
11 OL is a bit of a departure. I was sure when Rhattigan was cut that Barrettwould make it but, no! Overall this first cut at a roster looks… good!
I think sundell gets cut once abe comes back.
That still makes 11 though.
So if the OL were the entire offence, who would be QB 😂
Maybe that is what Stone Forsythe is actually good at!
😂😂😂
Biggest surprise??
McClendon Curtis not making it despite carrying 11 OL and Curtis spending a lot of time with the 1s.
*him get reps
That's 3M saved though
It’s possible that he’ll sign a new contract and be added to the roster.
Carrying fewer DBs than we predicted with more OL is a bit surprising also
I see LBs mixing tasks with DBs and vice versa should minimize the demands for a deep bench? We can bet MM has identified his dream players and John will snap them up on trades throughout the year. Meantime, train hard in both disciplines. Looks to me like our athletic Big Guys can't be interchanged if you don't have the size, so keep as many as possible and demand your Asst. I'm surprised both Artie Burns and DJ James were cut (especially Burns), as I thought they'd keep a backup nickel guy. Hope we can stay healthy at CB and keep hold of these guys on the PS.
I assume they have to see some of their safeties as capable of playing like a nickel DB. Bryant maybe?
True. Recent history tells us that Coby is probably about as good as Burns and better than James at nickel CB.
Burns has a foot injury. Probably headed for the practice squad. He'll probably be called up sometime during the year. I think he's part of the usual early shuffle.
Just saw Jeremy's comment about Burns. Sorry for the dup.
A good sign maybe that Nwosu is on the 53? Maybe he will only miss a week or two.
Several players are wrongly mentioned as being cut: T Michael Jerrell, G Sataoa Laumea, WR Dareke Young
Notable names to be cut:
If Barrett clears waivers then I think that is Jeremy's point. We didn't have to trade anything for him
Isn’t this a “who cares?” No doubt Schneider has a three-dimensional chess move in mind, but (a) those never come to anything and (b) it never matters.
I would say so
Maybe JS thought hw wouldn't make it all the way to us in waivers, and he wanted him as a + prospect?
I doubt that, since I'm not aware that he flashed exceptionally in preseason, maybe JS was just concerned about the possibility of the Panthers keeping him and MM saw something in him that he could develop from his time at Michigan.
Per infamous PFF ratings Barrett was highly ranked rookie tackler in first 2 preseason games.
Does the Player have a say in whether he leaves or not? What if a guy wants to stay and develop under Mike's tutelage?
I don't think Dee will clear waivers. He's an athletic second round pick with a great highlight run back. Some team will take a gamble on that.
I'm convinced one of our biggest motivations to cut him was his game not including being able to make the blocks shenault could.
With Grubbs offense last year those WR blocks were vital
How many guys can make the practice squad?
16
plus international exempt player ?
Yes. 17 including Max Pircher if they kept him
The cornerback room looks a bit light at just 4.5. Williams is a .5
Yep surprisingly Burns cut.
This is the biggest roster surprise to me, keeping only 5 and one’s a UDFA returner?? Must be another move coming.
After reading Condotta and understanding Artie Burns vested veteran status, I guess I understand what happened with the cornerbacks. This says that our late round Tackles we drafted are worth keeping around. I like it. Will anyone be poached? I worry about Sherrif.
I did some digging on Sheriff's competition and it turns out we were probably watching a UFL game. Like, with 1 minute left in the 2nd he got pancaked by #63 G (playing T) Zach Johnson (cut). Solid research. Thanx!
UCHENNA.

Yeah! Bobo's run play looked like it was designed to hit the edge but he saw an opening and immediately made a decision. You can't teach that.
Completely agree. Sort of why a certain small, slow guy set every receiving record there was. No Bobo isn’t Largent, but skills with brains can succeed. Truly hope see more like that this year.

That versatility aspect is a big part of why I think they kept Shenault over eskridge too
Doesn't look like O'Connell was included in the cuts section. He's also being signed to the practice squad according to himself.
Never heard much about him but thought he looked pretty good in the 3rd game as reliable depth
Jon Rhattigan has a good chance to be re-signed tomorrow when Uchenna Nwosu goes on IR. It all will depend on whom is available on waivers from other teams.
Panthers got him. They sure love them some ex Seahawks.
Multiple cuts and saves ? Surprised O'Connel and Sherrif aren't on the save list here! They have both played very well in the preseason. Hopefully they can make it to at least the practice squad-
Really glad that Sataoa is a keeper - I am convinced with the right coaching he can be a very good Guard in the future.
O'Connel at least made it the practice squad-
