If every Seahawk on the injury report was out
14 Seahawks were on the injury report, who is the next man up? Seaside Joe 1665
The Seattle Seahawks listed 11 players as “Did Not Practice” on injury report on Thursday, with another three who were limited. If the Seahawks actually had 14 players out, they wouldn’t even be able to field a gameday roster. That’s not what’s going to happen, but here are the names from the injury report and the fallback plan.
T Charles Cross (Toe)
I’m thinking that Cross doesn’t play this week, which likely means it’s another round for Stone Forsythe and Jake Curhan. Jason Peters probably isn’t going to debut this week, but he’s enjoying his role as a mentor so far.
Next Man Up: Forsythe
TE Will Dissly (Shoulder)
As insurance for a tight end, the team added two quarterbacks: Brady Russell.
For the Seahawks to have four tight ends on the roster, good indication that Dissly could miss this one. I wrote about Noah Fant and nine other takeaways from the All-22 footage against the Lions; I like what he and Colby Parkinson were able to do, but it would be just as nice to have Dissly back.
Next Man Up: Fant, Parkinson, Russell all move up a peg
WR DK Metcalf (Ribs)
Metcalf “insisted” he’s fine, according to Bob Condotta. Okay, if he insists.
Next Man Up: I would think in any scenario without DK, Jake Bobo gets more snaps
CB/S Coby Bryant (Toe)
Has missed two days of practice and had an offseason toe-related issue. It’s difficult to sort out the secondary because a lot of the injuries this week are in that area of the field, but let’s just say that Mike Jackson, Jerrick Reed, and even Kyu Blu Kelly could be called up to support.
Next Man Up: I would say that if Jamal Adams isn’t available, Reed could be the player most similar at this point? Or it could be Artie Burns, although he could be needed in another role.
S Julian Love (Hamstring)
Not a part of the body you ever want to be associated with injury. It could be anywhere from no time off to a prolonged IR stint. I recently heard Steve Smith talk about how a hamstring injury could mean 6-8 weeks of rest even before you start to rehab. Or he could be fine on Friday, it’s that mysterious right now. With Adams unlikely to go this week, safety becomes the thinnest position.
Next Man Up: It could be Jerrick Reed time.
NT Jarran Reed (Groin)
Up a J. Reed, down a J. Reed. This is one where a practice squad call-up would be a necessity, meaning that Matt Gotel or the recently-signed Carl Davis could not only be activated against the Panthers, but to play significant snaps. A groin injury for Jarran Reed? That’s going to be tough to return from if it’s anything legitimate.
Next Man Up: Cameron Young would get the start, Gotel or Davis would be added to the gameday roster
CB Riq Woolen (Chest)
There’s been no indication from Pete Carroll this week that Woolen is “fine” enough to return by Sunday. It doesn’t sound like there will be an IR stint either, but then the Seahawks made a point to add Artie Burns to the 53-man roster.
Next Man Up: The starting CBs against Carolina could be Devon Witherspoon and Tre Brown, with Artie Burns in the nickel and Mike Jackson as the next.
S Quandre Diggs (Hamstring)
Pfff….
Diggs practiced on Wednesday, then is DNP on Thursday. Did he get hurt during practice? The Friday report will say a lot more than the Thursday report, but this is not a great sign.
Next Man Up: The Seahawks have two safeties on the practice squad, Teez Tabor and Ty Okada…I’m pretty sure Adams is going to be a “No” this week, and now two starting safeties have hamstring injuries and Coby Bryant has missed all of practice because of his toe. I’m going to throw out there that Jerrick Reed could start, one of the other safeties maybe comes off the injury report, and Teez Tabor is called up?
G Damien Lewis (Ankle)
Another guy who was fine on Wednesday, then not fine on Thursday. One of Seattle’s toughest assignments on Sunday will be stopping Panthers defensive tackle Derrick Brown. Could the Seahawks really be down to backups at LT, RT, and LG? Oh wait…let me do one more first…
G Phil Haynes (Calf)
Could the Seahawks really be down to backups at 4/5 offensive line positions? And Evan Brown had to come out of the last game! (Brown is on the injury report, but as a full participant.)
Next Man Up: In the absolute worst case scenario, the Seahawks would have to start Ben Brown and Anthony Bradford at guard, with the other possibility being that Jason Peters somehow is ready by then. He played some guard with the Cowboys last season.
LB Jordyn Brooks (Rest)
This is the only other name besides DK Metcalf that doesn’t sound concerning. Brooks has been getting Thursdays off.
Next Man Up: It would be Devin Bush, but if not Bush, then Drake Thomas
ALL of these players were DNP. I’m going to say that Brooks and Metcalf sound okay by most indications, while Diggs could be veteran rest day.
I’d guess that the Seattle Seahawks start their backup offensive tackles again and we’ll just have to wait and see on the guard spots. Maybe call up Carl Davis, who is a 31-year-old veteran who most recently played with the Patriots, and Teez Tabor from the practice squad for a gameday activation.
LIMITED: LB Devin Bush, OLB Boye Mafe, S Jamal Adams
The team can’t say, “Hey, we need to rush you back, Jamal” for any reason. If he’s ready, he’s ready. If he’s not, then the Seahawks can’t worry about how badly they might need him this week. There have been positive signs on Mafe being a return this week, which I think the Seahawks will really need as an upgrade to what we’ve seen out of Darrell Taylor so far.
I’ll keep an eye on the injury report on Friday for any major updates, which should include some official rule outs, if any. Speaking of which: Panthers QB Bryce Young has been ruled out, as I alluded to earlier in the week, so it’s Andy Dalton again. That gets a non-sarcastic “Oh no” from me.
On the OL they could move Brown to G and start Olu as just another option.
I wonder if "sitting the starters" during preseason (I know some of these guys played, but nothing close to a full half of football if they did) contributes to early-season injury? There is simply no way to simulate game-speed contact.
I am starting to wonder about training. I dislike the cliche but “just saying.” If the 12 and 13 personnel is a strong point then let’s go to the strengths. It seems to have kept the heat off Geno.
