Dislocated 2 ribs crashing in to the net playing hockey. Couldn’t take deep breaths for almost 6 weeks. Changed my mentality on how hard I drove the net in beer league 😜
A grade 3 hamstring tear. I was sprinting at the end of jogging and it felt like I was shot. It took months to heal and when I run now it’s more like a horse galloping.
We grew up among country cowboy kids. Unless something was at a right angle to normal, we were encouraged to "walk-it-off". Had Sam not had Drew in waiting, my bet is he would have done this and got back on the field, for good or ill. I will say a tendon tear in my right shoulder (boating accident), when diagnosed as a "deep muscle bruise", went on to separate after I kept using it for work. My bicep muscle ended up down near my elbow and is still there, as I couldn't get an operating room in the short time I had to get it retracted up to where it needed to be. So be damn careful if an injury is still complaining days later.
I was driving to the hoop when two things happened: a gun shot went off, and someone hit me in the back of the leg with a baseball bat. I was stunned for two reasons, “why would someone bring a gun or a baseball bat to the basketball court” and “why would they hit me?”
When I turned around, there was no one there. No bat, no gun. It took a second for my brain to catch up but when it saw my foot dangling from my calf I realized I just simply tore my Achilles tendon.
Playing football in middle school I was tackled onto a curb and smashed my two top front teeth. It was two-hand touch but everyone was very competitive.
I had bad ankle sprains from pickup basketball and volleyball games. Both times I landed on another player’s foot and rolled my ankle. After the first one the doctor said a break might have healed easier. Probably what we now know as “high ankle sprains.” Both kept me on crutches for a couple of weeks and took months to a year to fully recover. I’m very fortunate that I’ve never had any injuries worse than those.
Tore my distal bicep tendon(otherwise known as the Popeye tendon)...trying to high five a friend after the Seahawks first SB victory and missed the high five😏
Partial tear of my ACL in a family-picnic basketball game. Since this was almost 50 years ago (and long before they knew how to surgically repair a ligament), I was put in a cast for five weeks, then told to do 1,000 leg-lifts/day to strengthen the muscles and protect what was left of the ligament. I couldn't wait to get out of that cast, right up until they took it off... then I begged them to put it back on.
The other day I went hiking in 104 degree heat and I literally couldn't see anyone else on the trail as far as the I could see. Not the same as almost drowning but I did think to myself "Was this not a good idea?"
Spiral fracture down tibia into growth plates of ankle. Was at an Offense-Defense camp at PLU the summer going into my 8th grade year. Took about 9 months to recover. Only major injury in football. Had some bad ankle sprains in HS and a hip flexor strain in camp going into my senior year of college. Was mostly fortunate though for playing extensively across 13 years.
Only time I went to the ER was because of football practice. We think it was a hernia (felt like someone ripped across the bottom of my stomach with a blade) but never got a clear diagnosis. It went away.
My 3rd worst: a few cycling injuries, including an ankle sprain and contusion on the hip.
2nd worst: A partial rotator cuff tear from swimming.
Worst: Broken foot when going down the stairs too quickly when halftime ended. I didn’t want to miss the first play of the 3rd quarter. Went to the hospital *after* the Seahawks won and the presser ended. And yes, I classify this as a sports injury.
Man, it's those moments where you couldn't imagine why you'd get injured that seems like the injuries pop up. I've hiked over 1000 times in the last five years and every once in a while I'll take a step that bends my ankle and I'm like "woof, lucky i didn't sprain it". So far so good. I must have bendy ankles. But I'm so afraid of the one time I won't be lucky and all I can do is try to mind my steps.
In my case, I slipped down the stairs, and one foot got caught and bent back behind me as I slid to the bottom. Whee! I immediately knew it was broken. But the Seahawks won the game and went on to win the Super Bowl, so it was worth it. 👍
Dislocated finger playing pickup football on Thanksgiving. It looked a lot worse than it felt: the right ring finger was at a 90-angle in front of the middle finger and index finger. It slipped back into place while my parents drove me to the ER. The doc put in in a splint and I was home in plenty of time for leftovers.
Woof! Does it bend and work normally now? I had a dodgeball injury like that once with my thumb (not bend, more jammed and swollen up like a softball) and it took years to bend proper.

I bet it did!

I think I take for granted how lucky I've been to not suffer an exercise injury thus far.

That's wild!

Ah! That's a great description because I have never heard anyone like Aaron Rodgers or another player with a torn Achilles explain it so well.
Yeee-ouch!

Every since American History X I have feared the curb stomp. I didn't even think about it happening accidentally.
Back in ’87 I broached my gooch trying to get a lawnmower over a fence. Came down backwards on a lawn chair. Never made that mistake again.
Oof, ya never wanna broach your gooch too many times.
Ugh, just once is too much. No surprise Lawn Boy polo didn't catch on
Neck injury from leaning over a chess board too long. Long term rest required.
You could call that "Neckmate"
Best to take a nap with an extra-fluffy pillow. 😴

Sounds a bit like what happened to AJ Brown.

And yes I also call this a sports injury😉
Oh wow, that's the 2nd Seahawks-related injury in the comments already!
Could we call that a self-inflicted injury?
Absolutely!!

What did it feel like after they took the cast off?
Almost drowned twice surfing.Still kept paddling out! No explaining youthful insanity!

Broke my tailbone riding a bull in a rodeo for the first time. I retired later that day.
I'd do the same.

A severely broken lower right leg, like Joe Theismann’s career ending injury. Hit by a car while riding a bike.
It took over two years to get close to normal and it has never fully recovered.
Now, a one mile walk is exercise, vs. running a 4:20 mile before.
Just thankful to be alive and not paralyzed!
Yikes! Thankful for that for you also.
