JSN and ‘Spoon were my draft crushes and by golly I have receipts in many Seaside article comments at the time. We drafted exactly who I had been clamoring for and yes, I was over the moon on day one of draft day, but now I have irrationally given myself the pressure of hoping both go beyond-or at least live up to -expectations. And now both are dinged up and haven’t practiced or played enough against NFL competition, if they even are able to suit up week one.
I’m worried. I wanted to get a JSN throwback jersey but the price for a decent jersey and with press-on numbers and nameplate is ridiculous and bordering on offensive. I’ve had many jerseys over the years and I realized quickly that the press on shit like they gave us in high school isn’t made to last like stitched jerseys do. But I’m glad I didn’t anyway. Even if JSN has a hall of fame career, if Jake FREAKING Bobo is even remotely productive in this league it would be the most fun jersey to own. And the players get a cut of their sales. If I do buy one, he’s leading the pack because I feel he deserves it just for beating such crazy odds and making huge plays when he got his chance. And seems like a good guy who the teammates love. But wait, that’s not all! The name on the back of the jersey also says Bobo! Let’s be honest, it’s more fun to say than Smith, Adams, or Wagner.
A few weeks back - in a comment on here- I looked at Mario’s size and stats through first couple years in the league compared to Clemons (fully aware MEJ is not a LEO, but still a DE). Then this interview with him saying he’s not only in touch with Bruce, but with Chris himself. Nothing about this comment is strategic analysis, but funny to see this random confirmation of that analysis. Can’t wait to root for the dude to be the next CC (or maybe he’ll be more MB since he’s a 3?).
I would vote for Levi Bell to make the "top 5" because it seems like he has a real chance to make the 53, and he is not even an HM (an oversight I am sure!). Gotel may also make the leap from UDFA to 53 depending on what happens between now and Tuesday.
I’m a casual college football fan at best (especially since I live on the east coast but my team is UW) but I do remember Bobo absolutely annihilating the Huskies last season. I was excited we got him based on that game alone.
Man that’s a great HM list. Might be worth tracking these guys -- I used to actually, back in ‘13-‘15 when moving from the 52-man to the practice squad was much less likely. I think a couple of those years Seahawks had the highest conversion from the 90-man to a 53-man, including the poachers. Could just be over optimism but would be fun to follow this again. The GB starters were a bit better than our back-ups, but not that much better. Is Seattle is as deep as it feels?
The one weak depth spot I see is the O line. Not crazy about Stone and Eiland. I think with them out there we couldn't open up holes for the run. Also the spat of injuries on the DL could affect depth there. Maybe everyone returns quickly. All healthy, I like the depth on the DL. I still worry about Reed and Edwards being top notch starters. We will see.
Yes, afraid we’re thin at OL and also at LB. Wagz himself plus him withthe green dot is so reassuring. Brooks and Bush? Good but decidedly not great. Prob see fair amount of 3 safety/3 DB looks if it comes to that.
Although maybe Witherspoon at nickel is like having the Mighty Mouse at LB on screens or draws.
Also, look at the size of that man's hands compared to those of the little boys talking to him...if I ever meet him in person, I will merely wave hello from a very respectful distance.
For a guy who can't outrun the coverage, Bobo seems to always get open. I just love the idea of Geno throwing to DK, Tyler, JSN and Bobo. Three savvy route runners and DK. Give Geno 3 seconds of protection, and he completes over 70% of his passes this year. Dee Eskridge has 17 receptions in 2 years. 1 TD. Bobo will have that in less than 1/2 a season. More Bobo!
"We" keep thinking of speed as a simple straight-line thing and referring back to a 40-yard time. I have always thought it would be better to think of it as "velocity": a value having both speed AND direction. The ability to change velocity (that is "accelerate") measures both the change in speed and change in direction.
Mr. Metcalf is capable of a very high speed; it just takes him while to get there (catching him in stride requires a different lead). His acceleration might not be so great.
Mr. Bobo might not have as much top speed, perhaps, but it looks to me like he accelerates really well - both straight-line and otherwise.
Plus, I suspect Mr. Bobo might have a really good eye-fake. It is hard to tell just by watching telly.
My personal football career highlight comes from a practice in highschool. We had 1 team, I was a wisp of a kid in Gr 9 playing with some guys 5 years older and literally twice my weight. On a team passing drill I was lined up against a senior who played D, and I totally faked him out with my eyes looking up and in when I planted my left foot and cut out. I caught the pass while the senior stood and glared at me. The coach made the senior run a lap, and he later flattened me in another drill. But it was still sweet!
But yeah, it is possible to make up for a lack of talent and speed by being "crafty", which Bobo certainly is.
BoBo says he's a "high 4.6/low 4.7 guy". I believe my eyes confirm that when watching "fast" cornerbacks trailing in his dust. I've moved on. Truth is, the 4.99 got him here with us. I suspect this is where he wanted to be.
Like Doug Baldwin, Steve Largent, and Paul Skansi... crafty. Those guys all turned out pretty good without lots of straight-line speed. Of course, if it had been slick and rainy when DK ran his 40, like it was when Bobo ran his 4.9, he may have only run a 4.6. Seems like people forget Bobo also ran 4.6 on the day it was dry. 4.6 is not molasses.
It appears my memory is a little tainted about Skansi. I remember him being a solid move-the-chains guy, but his stats are pretty ordinary. Allow me a me aculpa, there.
Yeah, just rewatch the catch he made from Geno against the Cowboys that he threw from the goal line. He sold the hook route so well, he could have walked past the cornerback and been open
I’ve been seeing in several reports that DK is showing another level of route running himself. Not sure we’ll ever be able to call him a “route runner” with his spectacular ability to take the top off the defense (and run down Bubba Baker), but from what I’m reading his focus has been crisper routes and better self-control out there. Either, or both, would just add to what you’ve said: salivating over Geno in an empty backfield 4-receiver set with Dissly as the blitz-picker-upper. Wow
I didn't mean to slight DK I love DK. (not the 15yd penalties he gets for losing self control) I actually think he sees a big year with more yardage and touchdowns. Cornerbacks always seem to have safety help over the top when covering DK. His yards per catch have been lower than they should be. I think the lack of a threatening 3rd and 4th receiver allows defenses to get away with this safety help. With the abilities of three other excellent receivers on the field, DK will have more isolated coverage on him. 1400+ yards and 12+ TDs for DK.
Lucky for us that DK did not take a serious injury over the middle last year. He didn't look at all comfortable doing so, failing to contend for tight shots and falling a yard short on 3rd down more times than not. We can be certain his speed and size will stretch a corner AND safety deep all year, so let him chase the bonuses in total yards and TDs.
I don’t mean to be controversial, but from what I’ve seen of Bobo, he could be more valuable than Metcalf. He has shown that he creates space and catches just about everything that comes his way (has he dropped anything yet?). Can’t really say that about Metcalf even if he is a 1000 yard receiver. And I’m a fan of Metcalf.
Considering we haven't seen Bobo play against actual starting talent or real defensive schemes, I think time will really have to tell on this take. Bobo is the same height as Metcalf, has similar hand size, and a similar 3-cone (lol DK), but in every other measurable DK has Bobo beat (in most cases significantly). DK is notably 25lbs heavier (that's all muscle) and significantly faster, rainy 40 for Bobo or not. Funny in a very Seahawks way that they're both 25 years old.
Bobo will have to be a really amazing player to end up with more value than Metcalf but it's not impossible, just seems improbable. Due to being the same height and Bobo having a shorter wingspan and shorter vert, I wonder how often they'd see the field together once JSN is back. It will be really interesting to see how Waldron uses Bobo in 3WR sets while JSN is out though.
Yes, it will be interesting to see if Bobo and Metcalf are on the field together.
It just seems, with the little we’ve seen of him, that Bobo gets open easier than Metcalf does. Maybe it’s like you said and he hasn’t been up against ‘real schemes’. Or maybe he has a better technique. Maybe the 3 cone drill is more telling than we realise.
Like I said, I’m a fan of Metcalf and appreciate he’s a big strong dude, but he struggles with the most important aspect of his position - catching the football. That could actually be something to do with his size / build. Typically, the larger muscles one has, the less dexterity one has. Big dudes generally look awkward. Hopefully he’s been working on his catching and improves this season.
Haha. That’s all good. It’s kind of like thinking out loud, then getting different perspectives. It’s how we learn and sometimes get different ideas that we haven’t thought about. It’s a great platform for that kinda stuff. I might be weird, but I don’t mind being wrong. As Megyn Kelly recently pointed out, ‘It’s great to be wrong because I’ll be less wrong tomorrow than I was yesterday”.
It dawned on me I think I disagreed with two of your recent comments over the past couple weeks and it's definitely not personal, haha. I've gotten way more invested in this preseason than I thought I was going to be.
That's a good point and I've wondered how much work DK has put in during his offseasons to improve his skills and how much he has been relying on his physical gifts. Doug and Tyler are both players who have talked about their extensive film study and we all watched them both develop over time. I'm hoping DK takes football as seriously both of those players have.
They are both better with the other drawing attention. Whole point is Geno finding the guy who the safeties had to leave exposed. DK could get zero targets and still have a massive impact on the passing game because of the unique threat he represents. A 6’4” sub-4.4 guy is a nightmare for a defensive back. Gonna need help and that’s when guys like Bobo and Lockett and Fant/Dissly/Parkinson or a RB out of the backfield are going to a) find themselves open and b) enjoy some YAC bc a safety is worrying about DK.
OMG yes!!! JSN absolutely, think he could have been taken at 5 in fact. He’s that promising. SCARY how good Seattle could be if Geno has the time, someone WILL be open.
Re Burns, a life of fandom has taught me to be skeptical of a 27-year old CB suddenly becoming good enough to start. I figure Brown to start, although Pete could go with Witherspoon as the superior talent.
I will be surprised if Witherspoon plays much CB this season. He might if there are injuries, but I think the plan will be to use him in nickel or as a rover/spy guy.
Sorry yeah I wasn't clear. I think Brown and Riq will be the starting LCB RCB and Witherspoon will play some nickel CB, some "rover" with others also rotating into the nickel spot. I keep thinking about how Pete compared Witherspoon to Palamalu, and the role he had with the Steelers. All over the place, but whereever the ball was, there was Palamalu. That is going to be Witherspoon.
With good reason. Hell, I heard about a high draft pick QB that was supposed to be a starter, actually was I think, but who 2 yrs later was off the team, rode the pines for something like 6 yrs on several other teams and then some overly optimistic crazy man made him a starter. At 32!! Can you believe that.
JSN and ‘Spoon were my draft crushes and by golly I have receipts in many Seaside article comments at the time. The Wall is a great movie and Bob Geldof is amazing
Love the acronym (be ordinary...). Bobo should trademark it!

Paul Moyer says that Bobo gets into his route so effectively as to negate any speed deficiency between snap and catch.
I trust Moyer. He was such a solid player... almost Bobo-like, himself. Not the fastest, but such a smart player.
"We" keep thinking of speed as a simple straight-line thing and referring back to a 40-yard time.
