Seaside Journal, March, 2022: The month Russell Wilson was traded
Seaside Joe 1121: Part I of a memorable March
Do you love the Seaside Joe newsletter but having a hard time remembering why you love it? Good news: Here’s a reminder of everything I posted in March, 2022 about the Seattle Seahawks, the most pivotal month for the franchise since April of 2012.
Because we did so much work this month — I do the writing, but it is your overwhelming support of Seaside Joe over the last few weeks that has motivated me to write and record as often as I have been and I’m grateful for your attention and your time — I have had to split the March highlights up into multiple posts. Hopefully by splitting it up it will also give you a chance to browse and re-read at least a few memories of what has happened recently and what could happen next.
Browse these stories and if you see one that you like, consider sharing it.

Most Read Post of March:
On the Seahawks and Matt Ryan, Baker Mayfield, Colin Kaepernick (3/16)
“You’re in an unfamiliar place with unfamiliar surroundings, drowning in a sea of possibilities that seem like a lifeline away from the uncertainty of choppy waters. Then all of a sudden here comes Baker Mayfield in a life raft that’s 50 meters away and he’s screaming to you “Swim!” And Matt Ryan floats by 100 meters away in a tanker and blasts on the P.A.: “Stay where you are! We’re coming to you!” And then out of nowhere, a rescue helicopter is hovering above you, and who’s that wearing one of those massive helmets? The Rock? Nope, Colin Kaepernick.
Now listen to me instead, the voice inside your head: Put. Your. Feet. Down. You’re only in three feet of water, stop panicking.”
Which Seahawks defensive linemen can GO, and which one must STAY (3/3)
”The Seahawks could re-sign Green, cut Hyder, Mayowa, and Collier, and extend Ford. They still have Taylor and Robinson and a probability to draft at least one defensive lineman of note this year in what is considered a deep class at the position.”
Will Seahawks draft Washington State tackle Abraham Lucas? (3/7)
“We know that in 2022, the Seahawks could lose Brown and even if they don’t, they will soon enough. Right tackle Brandon Shell is also a free agent and not one who everyone agrees should be retained. Thus far, we know that the Seahawks have at least met with a couple of draft prospects at the position, including Lucas.”
Have the Seahawks done a poor job of building a roster around Russell Wilson? (3/8)
“No Seahawks writer has spent more time defending Seattle’s drafts over the last 12 years than I have, but I thought by now that we had ALL sort of agreed that the team has failed to rebuild a great roster through the draft. I still praise the Seahawks’ process to a large degree—we have to avoid letting our personal biases muddy a rational argument though.”
Russell Wilson traded to Broncos for top-10 pick, Drew Lock (3/8)
“I said that I wouldn’t write about ANY Russell Wilson trade rumors this year and that I wouldn’t touch the topic until there was actual news about a Russell Wilson trade. That didn’t take long.”
My plea to the Seahawks following Russell Wilson trade: Please don't draft a QB in 2022 (3/8)
“I know where I was when the Seahawks drafted Wilson, and I’ll always know what I was doing when they traded him to the Denver Broncos 10 years later. The Seahawks turned a third round pick into two firsts, two seconds, and two Super Bowls.”
Seahawks fans respond to Wilson trade: "I'M SO PISSED RIGHT NOW!!" (3/8)
“If you want to frame it in the most colorfully positive way possible then please think of today’s news like this: How many NFL teams in history can say that they managed to turn a third round pick into two first rounders and two Super Bowls?”
Analyzing how Wilson and Lock will play at new homes - Podcast w Sam Gold (3/8)
“Sam’s reaction to Wilson being traded to the Broncos. “I’m blown away not only that a) it happened and b) the compensation that was given. I’m more shocked at what little the Seahawks got” and “Is this confirmation of a rebuild?””
2022 NFL Mock Draft: Seahawks upgrade offensive line, defense in 2-round mock (3/9)
“Chenal didn’t draw hardly any first round buzz and was hardly even a lock to leave college football after his junior season with the Badgers, but his combine performance solidified him as a true day one prospect—with maybe a day two future because the non-quarterbacks in the 2022 draft are so deep.”
Why Seahawks must focus on "the farm system" instead of trading for the next "Erik Bedard” (3/9)
“You can be legally allowed to drive. You can be allowed to say that the Seahawks should draft Willis. But you shouldn’t be allowed to do those two things concurrently.”
2022 NFL Mock Draft: The FOMO edition, Seahawks trade UP for a prospect (3/9)
“5 - (TRADE) Seahawks select OT Evan Neal, Alabama
FOMO: on the top offensive lineman in the draft
Seattle trades picks 9 and 41 to the Giants so that they can stop Neal’s fall out of the top-four. The Seahawks move into the top-five and essentially can say that they traded Wilson for the next Walter Jones+everything else they got.”
Pete Carroll has acquired or drafted 35 former 1st rounders; here's what most of them have in common (3/10)
“The Seahawks are going to draft an offensive lineman with their first round pick in April, but may be considering an edge rusher if the right one is available.
Anything else would go against everything I know about Pete Carroll.”
How Seahawks fans reacted to Russell Wilson trade, most believe Seattle is TANKING 2022! (3/10)
“I’ve always said that what FANS know about the Seahawks and about football stupendously outweighs what I will EVER know about football and that’s why I like leaning on fans to gain better and more informed opinions on these issues.”
Yes, Seahawks can afford to trade Tyler Lockett; but is there a market for him? (3/10)
“Yes, the Seahawks would actually LOSE $5 million in 2022 cap space if they trade Tyler Lockett, but as of now that is completely inconsequential to Seattle’s interests. They’re either paying Lockett $10 million to be there, or $15 million to not be there.”
Seahawks 2022 NFL Draft Big Board: Top-10 (3/11/22)
“Seattle could start Neal at right tackle from the very first day of training camp and if he didn’t move from that position for the rest of Pete Carroll’s career, he’d probably still consider that a success. If the Seahawks can re-sign Rashaad Penny and draft Neal, then his vision for a 1,500-yard season off the right side might come true.”
Seahawks Draft Podcast: Mookie Alexander on free agency, first round quarterbacks, and rebuilding the roster (3/11)
“None of this matters if the Seahawks can’t effectively find a new quarterback, and that is a lot easier said than done,” says Mookie Alexander.
Bobby Wagner feels disrespected by Seahawks: "I played there for 10 years & I didn’t even hear it from them that I wasn’t coming back." (3/11)
“On one hand, you might look at this in a vacuum and say, “the Seahawks did Bobby dirty. They did Russ dirty. They have a history of this.” That may be a valid point and only looking at what’s reported about the players or said directly by them, what other conclusion could you possibly draw?”
Why the Seahawks must avoid trading for Deshaun Watson at any cost (3/11)
“It’s like a writing prompt where you try to come up with the worst possible thing that could happen to the Seattle Seahawks right now. That’s what trading valuable assets to the Texans for Deshaun Watson would be comparable to.”
The Seahawks won't be drafting Charles Cross with 1st round pick (3/12)
“Cross played in an air raid offense under “Mr. Air Raid” himself Mike Leach in 2021, and that meant pass blocking at left tackle for about 702 snaps over 13 games. Probably the most of any tackle in college football—and he crushed it.”
Ranking Seahawks trade options to replace Russell Wilson at QB in 2022 (3/12)
“Goff may get the last mic drop on me: He’s kind of sensible for the Seahawks.”
Ranking Seahawks free agent options to replace Russell Wilson at QB (3/13)
“If you like Mariota as a fit for Seattle because he’s not that good—and also not that bad—then fine. If you see Mariota as a “playoff winning QB who can save the Seahawks from being terrible next season” then you might be staring into the sun like one of Jerry Owens’s solar panels.”
Why tendering Phil Haynes is somewhat significant (3/13)
“It was announced on Saturday that the Seahawks are giving guard Phil Haynes the original round tender, locking him in for a $2.54 million cap hit in 2022. This won’t sound like a lot of money once you see the dollar amounts handed out in free agency over the next couple of weeks, but it is rather significant for a guard—especially a supposed reserve—to make that much next season.”
A month to remember! just saw photos of Russell & Ciara at the Oscars VF Party and it helped immensely to soften the loss. LOL
I’m impressed Kenneth! You put out so much good content you were able to do a “Clip Show.” 😀
