I hate that the Seahawks had a third preseason game. The best they could do is remain neutral. The worst they could do was have a key player get hurt. What we got was one of the bad case scenarios.
In a messy contest of mostly backups, the players in Seahawks uniforms had a distastrous first half:
Down 20-0 at halftime
Jake Bobo and Tyler Hall collision leads to both players getting injured
Offensive line backups struggle
Jalen Milroe continues to be a work in progress
On Bobo, a “fair” catch felt anything but…
Bobo walked into the locker room on his own power, while Hall rode on the back of a medical cart to have his leg evaluated. Bobo also fumbled on the play, the third of four turnovers by Seattle via fumbles on the day.
It is interesting that Mike Macdonald felt Bobo had to play the entire first half of a bad preseason game. Seattle’s other wide receiver decisions, including starting Marquez Valdes-Scantling and Dareke Young, suggests that the Seahawks are taking this competition down to the wire. MVS is clearly not out of the woods when it comes to final cuts (start prepping your victory speech comments now if my previous read on the situation proves wrong) but for what it’s worth he was also the team’s best receiver of the first half.
Valdes-Scantling had three catches for 33 yards, including a deep crosser on Milroe’s best throw of the first half, and was active as a run blocker too.
Bobo had one catch for 12 yards prior to exiting the game but also continues to work in with the punt returner competition, although clearly not always with ideal results. Dareke Young didn’t catch any passes. Cody White finished with three catches for 69 yards and a touchdown, all coming in the second half.
The Seahawks lost 20-7.
It doesn’t help that the Seahawks passing offense is so limited when Milroe is the quarterback. His accuracy is all over the place and he fumbled twice in the first half, going 7-of-12 for 65 yards prior to halftime. Milroe finished the game going 13-of-24 (54%) for 148 yards (6.2 Y/A) and one touchdown with three fumbles billed to his tab. He also had seven carries for 31 yards.
The only offensive star of Seattle’s first half was Jacardia Wright, solely because of a 61-yard run up the right sideline that was his entire production of the first two quarters. Damien Martinez had seven carries for 24 yards, not exactly helping his case either. Ty Okada made the play of the day on defense, although it’s hard to believe that regular season officiating wouldn’t overturn the pick on replay.
On the final Seahawks offensive play of the game, a shotgun snap went through Milroe’s hands, leading to the fourth Seattle turnover of the game. Maybe the snap should have been better, but generally speaking I can’t imagine that a quarterback would ever excuse missing a ball that was only off by a foot.
Milroe did lead one good drive on the day. The Seahawks drove down the field early in the fourth quarter with Milroe-to-Cody White serving a starring role in the action, but it would come as a shock if White makes the 53-man roster on Tuesday.
The final receiver role could come down to Valdes-Scantling or Dareke Young, although that is a question that needs some clarity on Bobo’s health before it can be answered:

Macdonald:
- Jake Bobo has a concussion
- Tyler Hall knee injury "we don't think it's that serious"
- Jalen Milroe needs to take care of the football
- Operation has improved for Milroe
- Andrew Janocko called the plays on offense
- Olu was suited up for an emergency, but doesn't reflect C competition
- Haven't made any set-in-stone decisions on WR competition but they have to consider how many TEs they keep, how many QBs, it could impact the number of WRs
- Great play by Okada. Happy for Cody White.
- Christian Haynes dealing with pec injury. Not that serious but evaluating it going into next week.
- Drake Thomas has had a great camp. Poised. Smart. Great for dime linebacker.

My immediate thoughts have caveats: We looked ugly. -But I counted 8 defensive starters against our 3rd/4th string offense in the 1st quarter, so I'm not going to be too hard on our backups. Milroe looked terrible. -But there were guys blocking for him whose names I didn't even remember from the depth chart.
Still, he runs with the ball away from his body and that doesn't even cut it in high school ball. His future doesn't look to be any time soon.
From officiating to the broadcast, to the play on the field, the game was bush league.
Referring was awful. I'll start with the huge on in our favor. Our biggest play might have been that INT and it should have been overturned. How do you watch a replay of that and let it stand? One of their biggest plays should have been a penalty after Bobo called fair catch, got run into (by a Packer and his own teammate), then another Packer flew in and took the ball from his unconcious body. To my eye, he had possession of the ball, was down, and had been touched by an opponent. After calling fair catch. Lots of low blocks that I thought would have been flagged went uncalled. The dive against Ivey was dirty.
The broadcast never showed the hold that overturned our first touchdown. I'm not claiming there wasn't one; in fact I feel certain there was. But a replay of a game changing penalty HAS to be shown to the viewing audience.
I hate injuries in a preseason game. Even to players who were never going to make the 53 anyway, because that's a terrible way to end your professional career. And watching this was a terrible way to spend my Sunday. Sorry to be negative, but the whole thing left a bad taste in my mouth. I wanted us to just end it early.
