Back in July, Seaside Joe ran a 12-question survey before training camp to gauge where fan opinions stood on certain topics about Seahawks players and the team. Topics like who should make the roster, who would become a nationally-recognized star by the end of the season, and how many of us would watch Hard Knocks.
For example, when asking fans which receiver on the bubble would be the “ideal” one to make the roster, the answer was practically a three-way tie between Emmanuel Henderson, Irv Charles, and Ricky White III. Of course, all three ended up on the 53-man roster.
Just kidding, none of them did. Montorie Foster, Jr. took that spot.
Which I think is absolutely awesome! None of us knew the answer, so it’s more exciting that it turns out that none of us could predict the real answer.
If it makes you feel better, Bryce Cabeldue won the “bubble OL” vote by a healthy margin and did make the 53-man roster, basically as the final piece. Patrick O’Connell, Connor O’Toole, and Nehemiah Pritchett were the top three finishers in a question about the best bubble defenders and also all made the roster.
I like surveys about the future because it gives us irrefutable context for what we thought before a game or a season, and then we can compare it with the results. Don’t take someone else’s word for it: Take your own word for it!
A lot of people don’t like predictions or making predictions because we don’t know what will happen until it happens. That’s the same reason I encourage harmless predictions like these ones. We can be even more surprised by what happens when it happens.
Worst case scenario? You’re right about everything!
We’re going to try something new this week and if it works, we’ll continue it every week (with improvements along the way). If it’s the first flop idea by Seaside Joe, then we’ll forgive me and pretend it never happened.
The Week 1 survey
I created a 12-question survey about the first game of the season, which of course is when the Seahawks face the Patriots on Wednesday. Predictions about the score and the players, and then we’ll see how close our expectations are to reality.
A couple of notes:
Don’t put a number to skew the average, give your honest answer
Example: Seattle’s franchise record is 58 points. Answers over 58 will be deleted, whereas “57 points” will get a big eye roll, if not worse
Sam Darnold averaged 238 ypg last season, JSN averaged 105 ypg, Drake Maye averaged 258 ypg, the Patriots averaged 129 rush ypg, the Seahawks allowed 92 rush ypg
