The Panthers spent huge money for 2 guards. Over $150M! For 2 OG's. I guess they decided the first step to getting their 1st overall pick last year to play to his potential, is getting him some protection.

But that's some seriously expensive protection.

This positional value thing is always shifting and evolving. RB's now seem to have value again too. It's crazy.

This is the expected iNFLation. With the increase in cap space comes increases in player salaries. So far I can see the emphasis on quality signings so far. Fant is the most WR like and therefore more valuable, and therefore in my opinion, Fant's contract was the cheapest by market value, and Leo Williams is right at market value. Fortunately, we got a real look at how he fit in with the other players and proved his value. I'm fine with it. Lewis leaving and Haynes at most a backup salary means we might prioritize the OL in the draft. I hope so. If Fautana is there at 16 I am all in. Then get another good iOL in the third. Let Brown compete with the rookies.

Lewis @ 4yrs up to 53M (26.2 guaranteed). Idk how the "up to"s factor in, but it appears that we let him walk for less than the 16M that SSJ gave as the decision point. Around $13.5M (or lower, depending on structure) was too much, apparently. Guards really seemed to have hit inflation this year. Hopefully, JS didn't misread the market values. Maybe he's just not that into him...

It'll be interesting to watch the plan unfold.

Yep Damien has left the building- I can’t say I would have matched the contract he got but the Oline is unlikely to improve in the short term.

You plug a top notch center next to Lewis and he will be a decent guard and I could see some definite improvement. Dollar wise I would hope not more than 8 mil per year- If they (JS & Mac ) see the value.

8 mil per year turned out to be a little low but hey take Joe 16 mil and your 8 mil and the average is pretty close to what Lewis got.

He got paid more than I would have given him, I guess good for him, but I feel it's a little high.

“ The fact that he hasn’t signed yet though tells me that he’s not getting as good of offers as the other free agent guards.”

In addition, this tells me that no one thinks that Lewis is anywhere near as good as the other free agent guards. Ray Roberts—who liked Lewis a lot as a rookie—is fond of saying “what got you here won’t keep you here.” Big Ray says that Lewis never developed past what got him to the NFL. I have to wonder whether Lewis is worth signing to anything other than a one-year “prove it” deal.

Lewis was never the same after moving from right to left gusrd.

Seemed like it to me, too. Roberts says that switching from right to left at guard isn’t as big a deal as it would be at tackle. Even so, I didn’t get moving Lewis to accommodate Gabe Jackson. The switch should have been much easier for a veteran.

Lewis strikes me as a "just-enough" kind of player, but it's no more than impression I have after working crews for a few decades, far from million-dollar salaries. At that level, I have a hard time believing anyone would feel slighted and underpaid, but people are people. Bad attitudes can be contagious and lead to total purges. Drew would do well to become family with these guys if he gets The Nod.

Did not know you were a Vikings fan because if Drew gets the nod it is going to be as Cousins replacement in Minnesota where it is being reported he is going to sign.

Reports had Lock signing with the Vikings but those reports are apparently wrong. That is what I get for getting my news from (formerly Twitter)

Well now it is being reported that Lock is bound for the Giants. This time the reporting is from Schefter and he is rarely if ever wrong on this sort of thing.

Kenneth only missed Williams by 1.5 million per year and the total guaranteed money is not yet reported - could easily be under 20 million per year for the first two years which is all that really counts.

Safety/ Linebackers IOL 35 million to spend.

The remaining question for the current players is Lewis - I suspect the Seahawks are offering a short term deal in the 10 to 12 million per year range. Lewis is trying to beat that but so far no takers.

We have to make defense and getting pressure on the QB a priority!!

I'm pleased. Noah Fant is the best of the TE's and LW is a key piece of the defense. I'm a little disappointed to see Jorden Brooks leave, but in JS I trust.

See, I thought Fant might be the worst of the three. Blocking was certainly not his strength, but he got precious few passes thrown his way -and this isn’t going to be the same offense. Like Jimmy Graham, maybe it’s a misuse (I’d go so far as to say criminal misuse with JG) to even put a TE in to block when it’s not what he excels at. Especially at the expense of minimizing reps of what they DO excel at (when that’s catching the ball). I felt the TEs were underutilized as pass catchers last year, and most years before.

Likewise I’m stoked to have big cat back, and have no strong opinions on Brooks. I just don’t know who we’re going to get who’s better.

They can draft a blocking TE. It’s clear that JSMM valued Fant a great deal more than Dissly and Parkinson. I’m excited to see how they use him in 2024.

Me too. I’m looking forward to the new season with probably more optimism than I should.

Keep all your optimism. Could never be a bad thing.
