It's not clear cut. In a way, Geno is Jackson, and Lock is Flynn (acquired in the off-season that wowed in some games in his career). But I think Lock is Jackson, and Geno is Whitehurst. Minshew is Flynn: will be a free agent next season that will sign a 3 year deal with the Hawks, but eventually be the backup to Grayson McCaw.
Excellent newsletter. Great detail. I appreciate the time and effort this requires...again and again. Best subscription to which I ever subscribed! I look forward to it every day!
Wondering about that timeline a decade ago. I think it's less convoluted, and Lock is named starter after preseason game 2.
I also don't think there's a 'rebuild' mentality in this camp, and that they're expected to win games, not just rookies ready for the QB1 NEXT year.
Although I see them drafting QBs more now as they got into a trap of not selecting QBs because they didn't want to offend Russ, or his agent, or whatever was happening there.
I remember that 2012 preseason and in the first game RW played in, the announcers were talking about irrelevant stuff as Russ was starting a play that ended up a throw from an impossible position under pressure to the sidelines that looked like a throw-away, except it wasn't. The receiver (maybe Lockette?) caught it and got his toes down inbounds. The anouncers were quite surprised that the throw had been completed... but that was the first time I went "oh wow...." at something RW did.
I am really not expecting any "oh wow" moments from Lock. If he just shows he has more 'moxy' than Geno, can get the ball accurately (and safely) downfield, he will be the Goff++ of Waldron's scheme and the will be good enough with all the other pieces the Seahawks have.
I remember listening to the radio (and reading vintage FG) during that summer while I was away in Florida. So much excitement, they coined the name Legion of Boom for the secondary on air, various hosts calling Flynn out saying he didn't want to fight for the job, then listening to that game, I hadn't even seen a deep ball from Russ yet but the way Steve Raible called it, you could tell it was the start of something glorious. To have even a fraction of that feeling back this year would be incredible.
I remember thinking, on draft day, that Russ would be an excellent gadget / change of pace roster piece but as rookie camp started Russ stepped up in leadership at every turn. TJack seemed like a quiet, rugged exemplar, I don’t remember Flynn’s style, but Russ spoke to each situation (“Separation / Preparation” “No memory /amnesia” “no time to sleep,” etc)
I don’t get a sense of Lock, Geno or Eason as vocal leaders. Lock and Smith have had confidence issues while Russ never doubted.

I am he as you are he as you are me and we are all together.
Goo goo g'joob
I kid you not:
Matt Flynn — met his wife Lacey Minchew in 2003 while at LSU.
How long until they have a draft eligible child, and will Gardner be a free agent pickup ready for a QB competition. This needs to happen.
Hilarious, Grant.
Or it could be the 'child to be named later' in a trade. Oh wait, that's baseball.
Yes, it's not a perfect 1:1!

I think Lock will be named between W2 and W3, for sure.

Yeah, just need to see "Oh, not bad."
I am fine with Goff++. Goff went to a Super Bowl.

It was such a good preseason.
Outrageously great history - thanks KenJoe!
