The data exists! The Athletic/NYT created a database for yards lost to penalties...now someone with a subscription needs to look into it and break it down for us.

I have just had an idea on how to add just a small wrinkle to the gameplan which could add the most to our chances of winning today.

Add three or four designed runs for Sam Darnold. They could be a choice for Sam to make if the DE stays inside for the fake to our RB. I forget what those are called, but Russell used them in his first two years as a QB to great effect. They could also be previous plays where Sam lines up behind center in play action formation where he rolls out, but change that play to one of these designed runs, only needing to change two or three blockers jobs.

This should help our running plays as well as the play action passing game if it forces the Rams to keep someone in as a spy, which removes a DB in the backfield. I'd love to see if it did the job, and it's possible, though highly unlikely, that KK and I are in synch and we'll see something like this today.

P.S. I would still expect Sam to slide before any serious collision.

It's the Tired Time of the year. The Dark Days of Winter. American Football gives us a vicarious way of measuring ourselves through the most athletic young men among us. 'What would i do? How would I handle myself?', given a similar situation. I'd like to think of myself as an ass-kickr. An OLD asskickr. Hey, in a World full of rampant Pretend, I'll take it. I'd point out the struggle anyone would have measuring who we are now versus who we began as. (I'd especially like to ask Offensive Line Coach John Benton how close we have come? No Pretend). What kind of crap can we do to ourselves which will dilute an outcome? I've worked through a few dark, cold exhausting days (plural). I chose Humor. Standing back, i looked at my fretful fidgety tired self and laughed. Who is that guy? Not me. Oh hell no. Give it over to them to do the pondering. Encourage it. Prove their fears were well founded.

I'm not sure what you said, but I like the way you said it. And if you think that's an insult, just remember that is almost exactly what I would say about most of Dylan's songs.

FTR's!

I think Seattle wins if they don't beat themselves. We have the better defense and special teams. They have the more consistent offense. If we make a few key plays, in any phase of the game really, then we will emerge victorious. I live on the east coast, and am an early riser, so I won't get to watch the game until Friday night. I'll be anxiously reading the comments tomorrow morning so let me know what ya'll see.

Don't let Puka win the game all by himself.

The previous contest…

The Seahawks average starting field position was on their 23 yard line. Due to interceptions, the Rams started their drives from their 43 yard line, on average.

The Rams started their second drive from the Seahawks 3. Their fifth drive was from the Seahawks 35. Their eighth drive was from the Seahawks 25. Their ninth drive was from the Seahawks 49.

Yet the Seahawks nearly won.

If we can win the turnover battle and win special teams, we will get the short fields.

Starting field position is what kept the Colts in the fight. It’s a big deal.

“Ironically, that didn’t matter when Evans had the best punt of his life in Week 11…”

Joe, you might consider emending this as follows:

“Ironically, that didn’t matter when Evans had the best punt of his—or anyone else’s—life in Week 11.”

Just a thought.

It was a great punt. The instant hyperbole of the world to declare that without any recollection of all the punts in history that it was "the best ever" is really interesting to me. It was a great punt. I don't recall every punt in history.

I don’t have to. I’ve seen a lot of punts by great punters. Never one like that.

Don James, " The Dog Father, " always spent a third of every practice on STs because he said STs were 1/3 of the game and accounted for the most game changing plays. May the STs be with the Hawks Thursday!!

Cross is listed as out for the game. I see Josh Jones is listed as backup. He has taken 56 snaps this season, with 19 in the Saints game being his most.

Now I am not trying to rain on the parade here, but this is very concerning considering the o-line play as of late.

Someone please talk me off the ledge.

Josh Jones looked good in preseason. He’s had 24 starts in his career.

Here’s a key paragraph from his draft profile: “Though a high quality pass protector, Jones could also get a little bit better against the run. His anchor strength, while improving, could still get a little better, and the jabs he unleashes at the point of attack aren't always that powerful.”

Frankly, Cross hasn’t played as well as I would have expected this year. Jones will have fresh legs and it’s possible that he’s been improving behind the scenes with the new coaching staff.

It’s not ideal, but if quarterbacks can be reclamation projects, maybe OTs can be too. We’ve often heard that colleges aren’t good at training offensive linemen.

Jones has good physical traits. Some projected him to be drafted in the first round. He was selected in the third. He has experience as a starter. He has good coaches. It’s not like we would be starting a first timer.

It’s not ideal, but it doesn’t seem to be a disaster either.

That said, if either tackle gets injured now, it could be bad.

Three more important players might be Boye Mafe, Charles Cross, and Anthony Bradford. If they all play up to their potential, we'll be OK.

Then we can talk about Puka Nakua and Mathew Staford.

A clear advantage for the Seahawks’ special teams is the weather. Jason Myers isn’t the greatest long distance kicker in the league, but Thursday’s weather should take 60 yarders off the table. Myers has a lot of experience with Lumen Field’s winds. The dome team kicker does not.

A wet field will slow people down, but Shaheed’s game is pure speed, rather than changing direction. He might not be as affected as those making sharp cuts. If he fakes a cut and keeps running, he can keep traction while would be tacklers lose their footing.

That said, I don’t expect blocked kicks. That takes more burst than the field is likely to allow. We have to hope for them to simply miss.

I’m not sure about the blocked kicks situation. During the last game I made the comment that we weren’t getting anywhere near blocking a punt. Not sure what changed, but maybe the kicking D worked it out last week against us. Hopefully the Rams weren’t taking notes.

I noticed that too. The FG blocks I remember have come from the right side of our line with a 2-on-1 against their edge blocker. Love burst through on the inside. Emmanwori went the long way around.

I didn’t see anything different with the Colts’ protection. Maybe they didn’t tip off the timing of the snap. 😎
