Jarrett Stidham signed but Drew Lock still a free agent and Tampa has made no noise in signing him. Makes me wonder if Lock's market is cool. Should the Hawks re-sign him?
It is the tampering period. Teams can talk but not sign. Leaks of prospective contracts will start being reported by tomorrow. The source of these leaks are agents letting the market know what the current bid price is in an effort to drum up another bidder who did not initially participate.
If the Seahawks are interested in resigning Drew, and they said they were, then they have already given Drew a number for a one year deal, probably pretty close to 1.5 to 2 time veteran minimum = 1.5million to 2million with half million guaranteed (non-competing backup). That what Geno got for the five years where he was clearly signed as a back up. Drew agent is shopping that number to see if he can get someone to beat it. Also interested teams may want to talk to Drew. My thought is that it is remains more likely that Drew is back in Seattle then not. The caveat to that thought is that if Tampa interested in Drew he is gone. I have always maintained that it was more likely that Drew would go to Tampa than Geno. Tampa moves to date are consistent with going for minimum salary at QB. Thus I don't think Jimmy G is any more likely to go there than Geno was. Translation Tampa is not signing a Bridge QB and is going to have a QB competition like we did last year. If Drew is invited to compete by last years QB coach then it means this time he starts as the leader and is likely to finally win one of these competitions. Thus if Tampa wants Drew, they can offer something better than an extra half million. They can offer a chance to start and prove that he is capable of being a QB1. If Tampa announces it has signed Drew then it is a pretty good bet that is what happened. If Drew is gone Seattle will sign one of the 15 back-up QB's still looking for a job and then draft a QB most likely on day two but possibly day three.
If neither Tampa nor Seattle sign Drew then Drew continued career in the NFL is in serious jeopardy. Denver gave up on him, Seattle did want him as a back up and his former QB coach who desperately needs at least one more veteran QB for the QB room did not want him. When that happens the practice squad beacons, followed by release from the league and a new career.
I’m really hoping Dalvin Tomlinson is a priority in free agency. He can (and should) play as a 0/1-Tech, but played last season as a 3-4 DE for the Vikings. He wouldn’t break the bank and would go a long ways towards shoring up the run defense. There are a number of potential DEs and big EDGE guys in the draft, a couple DTs, but the whole line can’t be rookies.
It's going to be interesting to see how they rebuild the DL. Even if they draft possible top talent they'll need time to develop so I'm curious how they'll approach free agency. Pete's comments about Ford having to play out of position (and me watching him play) make it likely he won't be back so who does that leave on the interior? Woods and who else? I'm not sure who is available out there but I imagine they aren't going to run a defense with mostly rookies on the interior DL.
While a good EDGE is always valuable I think they have the players for a good outside pass rush but teams being able to dominate the interior allowed them to mitigate it at times so it's my opinion that having a good interior will allow the team to flush QBs out of the pocket into the outside rushers more often instead of QBs being able to step up in the pocket or audibling into an inside run.
I really liked Shelby and he seemed like a great guy in interviews but this cut was inevitable. I suppose it's very unlikely we pick him back up, but I enjoyed his play for a season. I hope they surprise me and sign someone first wave level great on the D line. The free agent class isn't looking that impressive this year though and especially on interior guys.
I was perusing Field Gulls the other day and ran across a comment that seemed to be saying that the Hawks were losing the Wilson trade in part because players like Lock and Harris would no longer be Seahawks. I thought this was shortsighted... I think it's important to bear in mind that the release of these players allows the Hawks to free up space to bring in other players and these new players should also be added to the tally sheet in the plus column for the Wilson trade. Ss an example, can the Hawks go out and find another Nwosu with the funds freed up?
To be frank though I think the Hawks win the Wilson trade just by getting Cross and unblocking Geno as the starter. Geno had a better year than Russ did, The Hawks had more wins than Russ's final season. Anything on top of just Cross and Geno are gravy in my eyes.

You heard it here first

An unfortunate casualty. Very charismatic, like so many of our beloved all-time faves. Keep an eye on him for a re-sign if his free agency is tepid.

If history is any indication, I guess he'll be back in 2024. They always come back.

"ran across a comment that seemed to be saying that the Hawks were losing the Wilson trade"
There's always one, Bob.
You probably even know who I'm talking about. ;-)
I've got nothing intelligent or insightful to add, but I really want to be the first to make a comment. Go 'Hawks!
