With regard to the comment about Arizona's poor football history but attractiveness to the Big 12, I'm guessing it's partly their basketball history and partly that Tucson is a one million population market.

Maybe Young is Jamal Adams back-up because Jamal is not going to play a traditional safety role in this defense. The description of a viper sounds like Adams. At his best Adams is a viper not a traditional safety. I have wonder the same thing about Spoon. The type of player Seattle is bring in can play at or near the line of scrimmage and also cover. They are intuitive football players who see what is going to happen before it happens allowing them to disrupt the play without having to win an man on man matchup.

Which leads to the question of whether the Seahawks might be planning to be in a 4-2-5 for a lot more snaps. (a version of the dime defense). The viper role exists in a 4-2-5 defense. The viper is the wild card that allows the defense to move to a traditional 4-3-2 when circumstances dictate without changing personnel. A 4-2-5 is what Arizona played in 2020. Ask yourself does a 4-2-5 sound like the Seahawks personnel - (A group of 5 defensive backs all of whom are at least starter level in the NFL, for now 2 legit linebackers and multiple tackles and big defensive ends /rush linebacker's who can be rotated to keep from being worn down). Who knows whether it would work but the Seahawks would get the best players on the field at the same time. The key to a 4-2-5 is having a couple of very versatile defensive players. If Young has truly been elevated it along with the use of the 5th overall pick on spoon may mean the Seahawks are building a 4-2-5. If they can stop the run that defense is tailor made for the new NFL.

It almost seems like they are building a 5-1-5 defense of sorts, using two LBs at the line to rush with 5 DBs. I wonder if Pete is thinking of going with only Bobby off-ball. I agree Adams sounds like a "viper" and, while a very good CB, Spoon could intimidate all receivers rather than just the one man-on-man matchup. I like the viper concept. I wonder if Martindale is doing something like that in NY where JLove didn't have a "position"

Coverage LB's, building towards a shut down of the pass game - I've been saying this! So converting a former DB makes sense (why i'd also like to see Bryant get some time pushed up the field to operate that hybrid role). Continuing to follow this logic because i feel so very deeply uncomfortable thinking of Jones or Rattighan (i'm sure they're nice enough guys) taking meaningful snaps at LB.

Palm Tree defence - Strong leaves (D-Line) to gum up the line and tangle up opposing QBs/RBs, and powerful roots (DB's) to slam shut the balls in flight, with a bendy/flexi mid-line (one ILB in run coverage, one dropped into field sweep coverage) to fill in gaps. It's gonna win us that superbowl in next season.

It's fair to note, per Max's comment on the depth chart article, that the depth chart may actually show Young as being behind Vi Jones, BBK, John Rhattigan, and even Patrick O'Connell if we read the chart Left to right across the page completely. That would make Young 3rd team, at best, probably 4th team.

HOWEVER, that isn't to say that I didn't want his origin story. Thank you for such a quick turnaround with more info than I expected on him. Once again, your IGOE (Information Given Over Expected), and ECOR (Enjoyment Created Over Replacement) metrics are off the chart, not to mention your Cal Ripken-esque streak of daily articles. If the best ability is availability, you have it in spades. You are a 1st round fantasy draft pick of football writers, my friend! The stats don't lie!

Definitely agree with all who say that the depth chart may list him there and also that it doesn't mean a whole lot at this stage.

"Cal-esque"

Aye, Shaymus, I think SSJoe's targeting Joe Thomas' 10.363 consecutive snaps - that record is outrageous!

I read somewhere that a different team's head coach said "don't put too much weight on the first depth chart". I wonder in fact if some of these weirdish positions are done to send a message to some of the players Pete really intends to keep?
