No doubt the defense had no answer for the run game, but it seemed to me the referees played too big a role in the shift in momentum in the third quarter. They missed two extremely obvious holding calls that let the Saints get in position to score (even Matt Millen noticed one and pointed it out from the booth). Then they called two very questionable holding penalties twice on the Hawks to kill the next drive, and then a defensive holding that Millen felt compelled again to mention. The sum total of bad refereeing got the Saints some momentum and had the Hawks puzzled. I notice Lockett was willing to take a fine after the game to point out the uneven calls.

Still, no excuse for not tackling. Quandre Diggs, we're looking at you on that last Hill touchdown. You can't miss that tackle. You have to slow him up at least.

Just watched the game tonight (the replay) as I was at a professional conference this weekend. I feel really sad for Penny. Hope Woods and Hart aren't seriously injured. Haven't ready any post-game articles other than Kenneth's just yet.

I don't much care about the loss. Was great to see Walker break out and the continued development of Woolen and Bryant. Our tackles got beat a few times; this was the first game where they looked like rookies.

For the most part, Geno looked good today. Not superstar good but far better than I expected. I'm beginning to develop a real respect for the guy. That's a big thing for me, as I've been as skeptical as anyone. Yeah, the sack at the end wasn't great and Geno's biggest flaw is in third and long situations but look at how many first downs we got tonight on third. In fairness, there's no way to put this loss on Geno. I'm grateful that we have him and it's a reminder that Carroll knows his stuff.

Today's loss belongs squarely at the feet of our defense (or, more aptly, our lack thereof).

I guess I want a DUDE in the middle of the defense that shuts down the off tackle, 30 yard gains, gets 3 or 4 tackles for loss, maybe a sack now and again. I can’t tell you who that is; I don’t have a name that comes to mind. When the running back comes in behind the tackles or guards, my DUDE meets him right at the line of scrimmage.

I thought our defense was going to be really good. I thought we had 2 or 3 dudes ready and able to stuff the gashes before they got going. What a disappointment.

That guy Pete Werner on the Saints is a dude. I wonder if the Seahawks considered him.

I agree with everything except the possibility of him coming back down to earth. To be fair, if I was heading toward half-a-billion net worth and my wife was Ciara I might have a hard time finding the ground myself.

Honestly, the inveterate optimist in me is fairly content: this year's rookies look solid, and that was my primary hope. As frustrating as the defense has been, anticipating next year's draft positioning (and its impact on that side of the ball) is feeling pretty good right now.

A rugby style kick? WTF? What's the point?

I didn't think DK fumbled.

Geno played well.

If the Hawks can get to just an average defense they'll be a playoff team.

Let the reign of K9 begin.

The defense is gawd awful (see what I did there?!)…. Initially it seemed they were doing a better job of maintaining gap discipline and had some success in the first half. Then they regressed to what we’re used to. The loss of Woods seems to have a had big impact which speaks to the lack of talent and depth. Barton is B-A-D. He seems lost and is frequently out of position. Brooks seems to be trying to do too much. He was solid last year so I’m willing to believe that the poor play of the D is impacting his ability to make plays.

Really bummed for Penny (broken tibia), he has been great and doesn’t deserve to go out like that. I hope the Seahawks bring him back. Walker showed what he’s capable of, and the increased playing time will give him a great opportunity to learn. He still has a lot to learn and is going to make mistakes but I’m excited to watch him develop.

It seems like Geno struggles when we get into negative game scripts and the opponent knows we have to pass. But he’s playing much better than I could have hoped for ( although I had 0 expectations). He has shown he can run the offense efficiently when we are balanced.

At least the D should have a few boxes checked when they start rebuilding it next year, but definitely not a good unit right now.

According to Pete, the plan for the "fake" punt was to do a Rugby punt, not a run. However, protection failed and Dickson decided to keep the ball instead of having the punt blocked.

I didn't see a hold when Cross was flagged. Refereeing was really bad for us. Metcalf didn't fumble that reception, but let the ball go as his elbow touched the ground.

Definitely a hold. The first replay didn't show it but it was clear on the second. The ref was in perfect position to see it.

I saw the Cross hold. In 12 years, I honestly don't think I've ever referenced referees. It just doesn't matter to me, that's part of the game.

This was an entertaining and kind of frustrating game. Because I never really expected the Hawks to win it and with modest expectations for the year, I have NO reaction other than I just saw what would have been expected...Truly - sure I have hope and I did Hope they would pull it out, but I Never really thought they would be beating a decent team with a decent Defense on the road. Nope.

Here are other areas that met expectations:

1) Penny runs very well but I am glad the team was prepared in case of - you know...

2) The defense is learning a new system under a first time coordinator with a LOT of new faces in new places...this takes time - conversely, do we really think the Bronco's Offense will suck all season?

3) Geno is proving to be a capable 'point-QB' (nice) but he has not yet - ever - proven to be a top-flight game-finisher...IF he develops that into his game (at the tender age of 31), what a treat that would be.

4) 'K-9' runs just like I expected out of him - GREAT draft pick! Think 'Napoleon Kauffman' but with better balance.

What was 'new' was discovering Taysom Hill to be as Tebow as can be without the kneeling 'Tebows' following every good play. Nice weapon to have - especially since he can actually throw it as well.

Now what I expect are the Over-reactions to this game...football attracts more Passion than Level-headedness...bring it on!

Kenneth Walker score ..Check ....Kamara fumble ..Check Geno 300 yards 2 touchdowns ...Check ..although it was 270 and 3 ..kinda check..... TARIQ WOOLEN..PICK ....CHECK ...Pretty good vision board .......What I never envisioned was the Hawks scoring 32 and losing.... the defense not growing at all .

I need better vision .

The Seahawks are not good enough for 2 of 3 units playing badly: the D and ST were both awful.

It seems a bit unfair criticizing Geno for not getting to 40 points again--the drops (and fumble) by DK were drive-killing. The sack was really Geno's only bad play of the game.

The run D--wowzers that was awful. The tackling over all was better than the last game but allowing Taysom Hill to beat you on an explosive run play is inexcusable. The D was so much better with Big Al on the filed that it suggests DT is a huge need in the 2023 draft.

But my oh my that run from Walker was beautiful! The injury to Penny is hopefully not serious but Walker is more than capapble (health permitting) of taking on a bigger role. More fun ahead for him.

I was really hoping to see the Seahawks pull this one out--it feels like a pivot point for the team to be under 500 five games in. Arizona next up.

-Pete Carroll says it was NOT a called fake punt.

-I thought Waldron called a good game against the Lions but otherwise it seems the opposition makes defensive adjustments that Waldron doesn't match. Four out of five bad offensive second halves isn't a mirage.

-2023 is looking more like a defensive draft with third or fourth round QB for the Hawks.

-How did Michael Jackson play today? He had three tackles and a pass defended and Dalton was only 16/24 for one TD. I couldn't find any stats on how many completions/yardage Jackson gave up.

If you find yourself in a hole, stop digging.

No offense should have to score 40 points a week to win their games. Changing from a 4/3 to a 3/4 defense (with 4/3 “concepts”) obviously isn’t working. Either the personnel you have aren’t correct or the coaches can’t teach it.

You can use the two 1st draft picks on your favorite QBs and if your defense sucks they won’t make any difference.

Expand full comment
Seaside Joe's avatar

Any good offense should definitely be scoring at least 30 points per week in today's NFL. However, that doesn't make a defense like this acceptable either. Promising stuff on offense, but it's not enough. And it's not promising on defense.

We did get 32 points with a combo of TDS and FGs. While the multiple mistakes were aggravating the big plays were great. The defense is where the game was lost IMHO. I wonder if Metcalf is a moody player. He has to be happy Wilson was unsuccessful in getting him to Denver at this point 😎

The big mistake was they went to a 3 / 4 scheme before they had the players that could play it.

85 points in 2 games against mediocre offenses is atrocious! Long season a head. Geno took gas in the 2nd half.

Only good was Walkers break out game.
