Having watched the entire game, I was wandering when the pick happened. Thank goodness I haven't lost it yet. BTW, my favorite play was the Tory Horton punt return and the joyous celebration on the sidelines, Of course there was no joy on the Saint's sideline throughout the game. Go Hawks.
As someone who was livid that Larry Izzo was let go for Nepo Baby Jay Harbaugh, especially after the ST were underwhelming last year, I humbly must give credit where credit is due. The ST have really stepped up this year, with yesterday's performance being the coup-de-grace. My apologies Jay for shitting all over your abilities.
I’m not fretting about stats from this game as the long held belief that “stats are for losers” is epitomized by this type of game. The only stat that actually matters is points and the Hawks excelled in that stat yesterday.
After pre season I felt the Offense and Defense were fine, but was very worried about ST. Boy was I wrong! I guess there is a reason I watch football, but don’t coach it!🤪
Thoroughly enjoyable game. The Seahawks win convincingly so rarely, I wasn't sure what to do with myself during the second half. No anxiety, no worry, just sat there sipping my wine with little to think about other than when the starters might start coming out of the game. I did manage to worry about injuries, so it wasn't all relaxation and wine sipping. A few thoughts;
- Josh Jobe needs to play. When/if the secondary gets back to full health, he still needs to start. Opposite Spoon if they play him outside, or opposite Woolen or Kendrick if Spoon kicks inside. Next to Spoon, he's the most physical of the CB's, and it's not close. He knocks people around when he's making tackles and seems to enjoy doing it.
- Woolen had a decent game in coverage, but his run support is still.....what's the word......nonchalant. He may lose his job in a contract year. Mike MacDonald talks about how he wants his defense to play, and Woolen is not it. Of the fast, smart, and physical.....he only ticks one and a half boxes. Don't get me wrong, he's a solid CB, I'm just sayin' he's getting outplayed by at least one other player at the position. Maybe two.
- The block by Surratt on Horton's punt return was a punctuation mark on an already fantastic play. De-cleating defined.
- I guess whatever doubt remained about Horton's ability to contribute significantly in his rookie season is put to rest. Kid makes plays, and will only get better.
- For those looking at the box score and fretting about 3rd down percentages or Kupp's receiving yards, my advice is, fret not. Context is everything, and in this kind of game, and when you are 4/5 in the red zone, are constantly given preferential field position by special teams and defense, and are highly efficient on 1st and 2nd down, it matters not. The Seahawks managed the game beautifully after they were up 21-0. We shouldn't be wondering about why ALL the stats don't look good.
- Darnold is playing exactly like what we need. Efficient, few mistakes, and accurate with his throws. And he does it with a humbleness that I appreciate.
- The pass protection was mostly good. The run blocking was spotty, but running into a 5 man front is not easy. If the game had been closer, I expect Darnold would have thrown for 300+, as the Saints were frequently selling out to stop the run. But I really appreciated Kubiak continuing to dial up runs. We can't check out to a pass every time the box gets stuffed. Run it anyway. I'd love to see even more of the I-formation stuff with Robbie Smash leading the way.
- Speaking of Robbie Smash, he got dinged up in the game. An ankle from what I understand. Hopefully nothing serious, and he jogged off the field, so hopefully something he can bounce back from quickly.
On to Arizona, who had to battle tooth and nail with the 9'ers. Probably a tough Thursday night game, so hopefully we can show up again on the road.
Okay people, you are letting things slide. FYI, per the game book, Sam had a PERFECT QB rating for the first half. Anyone still have any issues with him? Yeah, he ain't perfect and it's early in the season but still, stat heaven!
Okay, I got spoiled. I don't have to see a double pancake every game but if I don't see at least one I don't think they are using Ouzts right.
And if the special teams can score a TD the defense needs to get with it and score one. I think they are overdue but with as many injuries as we had I'll cut them some slack. Maybe Woolen will have to sit.
Tory Horton PR TD, but my favorite part of it was Chaz Surrrat (#44) absolutely de-cleating the last Saint with a chance to tackle Holt. I was critical of Jay Harbaugh and special teams early on, but they had their Mojo today with the PR’s & KR’s and coverage on our KO’s. McDonald has the whole team elevating their play…Saints are terrible, but to beat someone that bad in the NFL is impressive.
Could say we "Chazzed" the Saints, knocked them on their ass. Plus, it has a ring to it. Getting Ouztsed, while more deserving, is just difficult to spell, much less say.
We will see when the national press figures it out. I can’t tell you how many times I bristled hearing them say “they lost Geno, DK and Lockett, they’re a 7 win team.” I kept saying Kupp would replace Lockett’s production, DK would be replaced in the aggregate, (Horton, Arroyo, better production from JSN) and not be hindered by DK’s limited route tree. MM said in regard to the Horton selection, “he can take the top off the defense and he can run all the routes which is a big requirement in this system.” I think Geno has the ability to carry a team, but I would put money on a bet that KK prefers Darnold to Geno for his system.
I'm not missing DK. At all. Watching the look on Roger's face said it all after DK dropped his pass into his hands. Never mind falling short of the first down, should he have caught it. Shoving Josh Jobe around later was simply pathetic.
As soon as I found out DK didn’t want to be a Seahawk and had wanted out of Seattle for over a year, Stone Hands DK was dead to me. Good riddance. He was a non factor against us. Killed two drives with drops. Had one good play for a guy making $30+ million a year. He’s an athlete who plays football, but he’s not a football player. If he was a football player, he’s be Megatron. But he’s not, and by now you’d think people would figure it out. He’s a WR2 about to slip to being a WR3. I’ve refused to give in and say this group of wide receivers is a step back from last year. I feel bad for Lockett not being part of the team, but DK? Nah, to hell with him.
Well, we fans are entitled to be opinionated. Unfortunately, we fans, me especially, are often wrong. I tend to err on the side of positivity for the Hawks, and I’m overly negative for players who didn’t want to be Seahawks. I especially love guys like E Jones and A Lucas who sign team friendly deals that allow us to perhaps get better by keeping or signing someone else to get us over the top.
Team players. I agree. I suspect JS cements this with guys he will keep and know who won't be with us next year. My bet is Jody is good with this approach if only to foster meaningful lives. Their Hawks don't pay wild money, as there is really no future in doing so. JS will support a guy going elsewhere to get it and still have them back if he still could fit.
Now is the time to take the stats we have and quickly figure out what everyone's stats will be for the 17 game season. Horton will have 17 TD's, JSN will have 1800 yards receiving, K9 will have 15 rushing TD's but only 750 yards, and Sam Darnold will throw for about 25 TD's and 12 INT's with about 3,000 yards passing.
Seriously, time to go to work. No days off. We go to battle on Thorsday night.
Interesting to note that the stat lines were so meh. And also that the Hawks were ridiculously dominant. I'm always a little nervous when a team jumps out to an outsized early lead. It feels like the tide will shift back hard against them to compensate the football gods. But it never happened! And so many new faces contributed. This team is deep. We may have something truly good going down here.
Essentially a Support Group statement game. MM can now confidently sit anyone trying to play a "take-it-easy" game. If Big Cat and JR Reed are happy, I'm happy. Who said "I'm not happy until you are not happy!"? I think it was Don Imus?
Also, dominant win without Spoon, Love, etc. Defense held firm despite a depleted secondary due to the continued good play of the d-line. Kamara has always been a bugaboo for us but held him in check, which was key to victory (in game planning, though ST made it less important). Darnold had some nice throws, he’s much better than Geno.
Probably not, but I don't there is any remaining doubt he will have a big impact for the Seahawks this year. Kid just gets it, and has the tools. I'm totally ok with him winning ROY, but I think you need to be a starter for that to happen, but I guess we'll see.
Sorry about that, Darnold didn’t have a pick like the post originally said

I like stats too! The Seahawks have some amazing stats this season that I'm excited to share.

Me, on Friday: Well with all these injuries in the secondary we will need to score at least in the high 20s
Scored 38 by halftime, I needn't have worried
Yes, I'd like a second round of this on TNF please!

I call it "OTO points". Other than offense.

JJ, I ❤️Chazzed!

We have a better QB, WR room, and TE room and OL, than last year. Every position group is better than last year.

Excellent critique, Danno. 'Athlete playing football' is insightful! Wow.

Blowout win and Mariners sweep of the Astros with Cal hitting more HR’s. Perfect Seattle sports day and weekend!
thanks for highligting the Mariners -- sweeping the Astros on the road with The Big Dumper getting to 58 is pretty damn special!

Tory Horton, rookie of the year?
Yeah, I’m getting a bit ahead of things. ;-)

I'm thinking 2025 Seahawks draft will go down as the greatest of all time!
