“the Seahawks know that this is business as usual when you play in a tackling industry”

Doug Baldwin used to say that football was a collision sport, not a contact sport.

Starters are going to miss time, which is why depth is important. Anyway, it’s not like we’re looking at Marcus Mariota instead of Jayden Daniels.

Keeping those 4 players out this week makes sense if they are close, but still have some recovery to get through. And it will put fresher legs on the field and players chomping on the bit to get out there, which would be great on a short week.

But enough thinking ahead. Deal with the opponent in front of you. Bad things happen in the NFL when you do not. The Saints will have about a 2.5% chance of making the playoffs if they start 0-3, so they'll be going all out for the win. We have to meet that desperation with poise and energy.

Last comment is about the injuries:

If there were ever a time to have a dominant front seven, it's Sunday. Rattling Rattler is the best possible way to protect our secondary

ESPECIALLY hearing Julian Love is hurt. This guy is the closest thing we've had to Earl Thomas since Earl Thomas and before Earl, Dave Brown. I SO hope our DL can force Rattler to get the ball out early...

Someone named Rattler seems like the guy doing the rattling, but hopefully not on Sunday. Rattling the Rattler is hopefully the way it goes.

.....blocking back who was suddenly out there more than you'd expect and sneaky good in the passing game.

One of three guys I've always wondered if we made the right decision at extension time: Dissly, Damien Lewis and Ethan Pocic

But of those three, having found another Dissly again in the 4th round validates Schneider I guess. He can find good blocking TE's who can also catch, and play ST, deep in the draft:

Uncle Will

AJ

Colby Parkinson

Luke Willson

To answer your question, yes I do think this early in the season you should let guys recover -- it's a LONG season and nagging injuries can hurt you for the season.

And, winning a division game trumps winning any other game.

We don't see the purple yellow and blue bruising, knowing you just can't send the guy out like that. There's no being shy in Football.

Yes … it is a smart move to save these players (help them recover) for a division game on Thursday night against a team who we may be battling it out for down the stretch.

No question in my mind it is the right move.

Cody White just got released and a player is probably coming up by tomorrow. That way Seattle can also elevate 2 players. Maybe something like Bell signed to the 53, Shaq elevated and Martinez elevated.

Update: White was re-signed to the PS and Damien Martinez was released from the PS.

JIMMY JOHNSON's avatar

You think MM/JS are gambling that nobody will snatch Cody up?

Expand full comment
Issac B's avatar

White is a vested veteran, so he doesn't go on waivers. The team can release him and immediately sign him to the practice squad.

I like Holani to back up K9, but calling up Martinez from the Ready Squad may be a good move. IF the trend in the game allows (we all know how 'Saints', historically, have faired), I'd like to see if Martinez has the potential that we thought when we drafted him with the blocking support Kubiak's scheme affords. I could be wrong (as that's my default setting...just ask my wife), but I think Martinez has higher potential given more reps. You can't have too many good RB's (or Bob's) right?

Expand full comment
Seaside Joe's avatar

For what it’s worth, MM specifically cited Holani as the guy who has earned more RB reps if ZC can’t go. I think Martinez makes the most sense as a call up too.

JIMMY JOHNSON's avatar

K9 and Holani 5'10". Charb and Martinez are 6' and 6'1". That'll be no accident. I watched Pittsburg LB Patrick Queen get surprised when suddenly K9 burst through next to him for another 10 yards last Sunday.

Scott M's avatar

Is it any different if you are cut from PS and sign to active roster vs being on PS and being calling up?

Expand full comment
Issac B's avatar

I think, if the player is signed to the active roster, it doesn't get counted against the weekly callup limit, or the number of times a player can be called up in a season.

The thing about Martinez being released from the PS is now another team can add him to their PS if they want. If he were on the PS, the other team would have to sign him to their active roster to gain club control.

Expand full comment
JIMMY JOHNSON's avatar

Now my brain hurts.

Expand full comment
Issac B's avatar

Only 2 practice squad players can be called up in any given game, and I think there is a limit of 3 times a practice squad player can be called up in a season. The Seahawks bypass that by signing them to the active roster rather than elevating them, then releasing them and signing them back to the PS.. That's easy for vested veterans like White and Griffin because they don't hit the waiver wire and can be released and immediately signed to the PS.

For players who are not vested veterans like White and Griffin, it is more complicated. When they are released from the 53 man roster, they hit the waiver wire for 24 hours before the Seahawks are able to sign them back to the PS. During that 24 hour period, another team can claim the player off waivers.

For rookies like Martinez, he is somewhat protected while he is on the PS because another team has to sign him to their 53 man roster in order to acquire him from the Seahawks PS. By releasing him from the PS, he becomes an unrestricted free agent and another team can sign him to their PS, if he agrees.

I would rather lose to the Saints and beat the Cardinals if that is what it takes to get Spoon and Emmanwori recovered for the rest of the season. Of course I would rather win both games, but if I had to choose, I would choose the former. Division is more important than conference.

Smart ball. Rather than run from injury, engage it. Make it part of the progression to the playing field. Next Man Up. It is terribly insulting to play an injured guy over you, truth be told. Rather than HOPE you can play better than anyone expects, DEMAND it. Rather than send you in with a huge No Confidence Vote, it is on the player to have themselves best trained as they could get. If that doesn't prove out, then it is Next Man Up. You got your shot, so go make something out of it. Every one of these guys are All Stars, so be one or get gone.

The biggest consideration is who the team is going to bring up from the practice squad since there's only 2 elevations allowed per game. With Charbonnet likely out, they almost certainly need a RB to go with a DB. I can't see them going with only Walker and Holani, unless they want Ouzts or Russell to get rushing snaps.

It’s time for the offense, which improved from week one to week two, to step up another level and create some space for the defense to absorb some potential big plays from the NO Saints passing game. How about some big time running game with time of possession win to keep the Saints offense off the field? It would also be nice if Jerrick Reed has a surprising performance for the defense. Getting quick pressure on Rattler will also help the safeties. Let’s Go Hawks!
