SSJ, a follow-up question to this intriguing possibility that Seattle’s 2025 defense ends up league-best:
Would this damage Carroll’s HOF credentials?
He and Schneider (together with Scot McLaughan) assembled and coached the Legion of Boom, yes, but the magic sauce didn’t have much staying power, in fact for many years two young pups in his own division routinely outcoached him.
Then Schneider and MacDonald (w/o Scot) assemble a 2nd Legion (the “Legion of Spoon”?) in a matter of two years. Meaning, the return to dominant defense required removing Carroll, not Schneider.
Of course those back-to-back Superbowls carry a lot of weight, as they should, and I’ll be forever grateful. But I ask this bc Carroll’s calling card was always thought to be his defensive prowess.
Yup, 2025 is looking better every game. If you couldn't enjoy last Sunday's game then I don't know what to say. If you only enjoy football when we win 30-0, then you won't enjoy very many games I'm afraid.
LB depth is definitely something that will need to be addressed in the offseason. An EJ injury would be a problem right now. T-Knight I'm so proud of. A lot of 'over drafted' comments about him after the draft, but he looks like a more than worthy 4th round selection right now. Other than that, we're in pretty good shape on the defensive side.
On offense......o-line. It needs to get solved, at least to a league average level. It's hard to evaluate everything else when that's such a struggle.
I'm still not elevating my hopes too much for 2024. If we play meaningful games down the stretch that would be great. But the team still has flaws, and good teams will find ways to exploit them. Either way, I'm going to enjoy the games and observing the evolution of the team. These formative times for new organisms is fascinating to watch. I've got all the faith in the world in Mike MacDonald. He just needs a bit of time.
I read (or heard) somewhere that the key piece was finding Josh Jobe, maybe we will end up calling him JJ for short? Jobe is apparently playing at such a high level that the coaches trust him for the outside corner duties, freeing up Spoon to play the nickel corner which puts him in the middle of the field and able to contribute to the run defense. I was surprised to see that even though I noticed he was playing well almost from the moment he got on the field. Or at least he wasn't getting beaten like a drum. In more recent games, opposing QB's don't seem to be picking on him to avoid Woolen. In fact, it seems Woolen is targeted at a higher rate. Even though, Woolen is doing quite well himself.
I am totally on the optimistic train. Optimism seems the only truly sane way of looking at the future, even if naive. But this optimism is based on reality so far as I can see. Re-negotiate with Dremont Jones. He is coming alive and has never lost his grit. He has changed his body to play a new position and it seems to be working. I don't have data, but he seems to set the edge better than either Mafe or Hall, who have both taken great strides in their consistency and run defense.
Without too much work, we could keep this core group together for two or more years. Basically, keeping the core together is what made the LOB noticeable, as well, of course for their excellence, but this group shows more potential as a run stopping defense and the DB's are comparably excellent. If LB Jones and Knight can appoximate KJ and Bobby, well then we could well be on the way to a real dynasty.
Knight was under drafted because like QB Allen ( Wyoming), he came from Texas El Paso. Congrats to the scouting staff. If the new D keeps playing like they did against the Cards, all possible moves are available for the Hawks in the off season. Oline help , TE.( elite speed ) WR/ KR. depth pieces and QB solutions. I still think trying Forsythe at guard could work because he has the right body type and his lack of lateral quickness isn't so problematic since most guard play is in a phone booth.
Plus it looks like Satoao might start at RG this week. Without any playing time and I'm sure less than others as far as in depth work with the staff each week, we might find out we have a guard on offense also!
I see Chenna being out due to a dirty hit taking out his knee (bstrds). Keep him. As we saw with Abe, the knee can take a lot of time to get right again. I think a little loyalty will go a long way toward securing a full unit of buttkickers who call Seattle Home. No doubt JS can come up with something to neutralize any downsides his agent can raise and still leave room to grow. As for Jones IV, methinks our Coach knows when he has His Man. Jones' arrival spelled immediate Good Things for what MM is trying to implement. As Geno is showing us, no one Man is The Heartbeat of this Team. I guarantee every one of them is seeing a group with Super Bowl win-potential. How much is that worth?
We need something to differentiate the Joneses… maybe JonesD and JonesE, kind of like Lockett was “No-E” for a while.
It is fantastic to see the D rounding into form pretty much as hoped at the beginning of the season. I thought they would end up a “top 10” unit by the end of the season but it is looking more like top 5 if they can keep it up.
I’m staggered by the change in the defense since Jones and Knight took over. I’m sure other factors influenced (like Witherspoon at nickel where he’s unavoidable, vs stranding him on an island — brilliant!), but it took major balls to jettison both starting LB’s you paid a pretty penny to bring in. Macdonald had to be very convincing to Schneider about what was wrong; they both had to agree a guy like Jones was the missing ingredient (wonder who else fit the bill??), and they had to agree the rookie could step in if next to Jones. Ballsy ballsy ballsy. The results give great credibility to Macdonald — he called it and then showed it.
And moving Spoon to nickel where he’s in the middle of the field was also brilliant.
And whatever they put in Williams’s breakfast cereal.
I don’t know man, it’s only been three games but essentially handling both Shanahan and McVay after years of getting our asses handed to us, and essentially stuffing the Cards’ running game after getting bulldozed earlier by lesse running games, is so SWEET!!
I hope I’m not getting overly optimistic but if you’re right (and you make a great argument), this could be amazing once this defense truly gells (I mean honestly, it’s only been three games since Jones and Knight took over). Wow!!
The difference between preseason Knight and current Knight is staggering. Preseason Knight looked completely lost out there on virtually every play. Current Knight is rarely missing anything right now. His growth is key to the continued improvement of the defense.

If I remember correctly there are only 3 coaches to win a college national title and a SB and PC is one of them. I suspect he’s a lock for HOF.

I absolutely love the new attacking D!
Need backup LBs as well. Jones and Knight are not enough.

Just to TOOT my own horn, How about what Bo Nix is doing!
Still absolutely hate he was drafted by Denver. But thought he was given the respect he deserved.
This defense is already fun to watch. Next year the rest of the league better tighten their chinstraps….the Hawks D is coming for you.

D-lightful!
God I love defense! May the 12s be with you and go Seahawks!
Ho Gawks!

Always New England Dan and John Ford Coley had the answer and they would really like to see you tonight. Lol
Knew.

Right on line(queue) or right on cue. 😊

Maybe call Earnest: "I.V." because he puts folks in the ER and he is a 4th? Or just stick to 1st names... no other Earnests or Dremonts on the team.
First comment! (Yay….)
