I will be disappointed if Zach Allen ends up being an incredible player and Jones is only mediocre (or worse!), knowing that maybe they had to make a choice between the two and who to push their chips all in for.

I heard K.J. Write make a comment (I believe it was in his interview with Mebane) regarding run defense that if he had an offensive lineman in his face, then there better be a defensive lineman tackling a running back behind the line of scrimmage. I hope that Jones and Reid and whoever else rotates in and out of the line are way better at holding the attention of the opposing offensive linemen than last season's group. It seemed like Brooks and company constantly had to contend with 300 lb guards in their face.

I’ll admit it. I read the whole article, AND all the comments. I must have missed the part where Kenneth begged for my comments, but I’d hate to leave a beggar hanging.

That’s a lot of analysis for a free publication. It’s an article about my favorite team, but a topic I don’t have the expertise or time to educate myself on, so I am coming out better informed than I was before I started. I have four living brothers, and now I have another chance to one up them during casual football talks. That’s a win, baby!

Thanks Kenneth!

I think there is always a risk on signing big FA contracts. Injury (Adams), not playing up to expectations, doesn't fit the scheme how the coaching staff thought he would and so on.

Seattle just didn't get the results they were looking for in their DL or LB crew last year. They had some answers eventually for poor safety play during the first quarter of 2022, but never found the juice at the other spots.

Seattle goes out in free agency and signs Jones, Reed, Wagner, Bush, Love, and Edwards. They draft Young, Reed2, Hall, and Morris (surprise impact draft pick). They add UDFA Failou (XFL), Tavai. They see Rhatigan (who they like more than people think), Smith and Robinson come off IR all of 2022 and the expectation of Brooks and Adams returning later in the season.

That's alot of moves for 2 position groups and all groups of problems defensively in 2022.

Jone's, Reed and Wagner are the new leaders on that front 7. Jone's is 26 and still has room to grow.

Jone's was looked at by many in the NFL circles as the second best DL guy avaialble in FA.

This is really a two year contract not a 3 year if Seattle doesn't like the cap hit (see OTC). Jone's feels dissed by the Broncos and has something to prove. These are reasons why he probably was a good free agency risk. There's no gurantees in FA. Seattle has done pretty well lately with Denver as a trading partner.

Seattle did something on the other side of the ball to help Jones and the rest of the offense. They beefed up their interior offensive line in the draft and FA and they added another 2 good RB's (JSN). Ball control, first downs, time of possesion; another element of a good defense. Reduced playing time.

There will always be disagreement with big free agency contracts; but they are a necessary reality of the modern NFL. I sure don't think it is the biggest FA risk Seattle has ever made and could be a core ingredient for years to come. (sound of dice shaking in hand)

Didn't we try and get Jones as part of the RW trade? Clearly PC/JS wanted Jones, have seen something in him that fits the 3-3-5 scheme and would be a significant improvement to the team. So they went and gave the man enough money to guarantee his signature with the 'Hawks.

That's almost the exact opposite of an overpay. You see the play almost a year out, try and get them then, still love them after a year, and agree a deal that still fits neatly inside your cap space. Not even a hint of overpay going on here.

But then maybe my definition of overpay is different. I view it more like what the Jags did a year ago to the WR market, having to pay way above odds to convince a player to join them and as a result knocking on the rest of the market. The payer(s) we are overpaying: Diggs&Adams as a combo, Jason Meyers, Nick Bellore.

Seattle could have gone a completely different draft path and then Jones wouldn't have been gotten. We'll see-

If you ask me, everyone is being obscenely overpaid in the NFL. I’d be happy with a fraction of what those guys get, and my job’s more dangerous and more important.

They are more entertaining though.

I admit it, I haven't read the article!

But initially it sounds like Seaside Joe has developed a bit of an attitude. He begs for each and every one of us to comment and now is getting pissey about people not reading the text before they comment.

I'll edit this in a few minutes, after I've read the article.
