This is awesome! I enjoyed learning about the Bear defense, and also the preview-review of the upcoming defenses. Thanks for putting in the time to learn all this and share it with everyone.
10 minutes of film study (or anything, really) a day could bear a lot of fruit down the road. The book Atomic Habits goes into how just making things 1% more productive has such a compounding effect over time, but so few of us will stick with things when we don't see immediate results. Instead of taking a year to set for our weight loss goals, we tend to want to shed 40 pounds in 90 days and use methods we won't stick with.
You had asked if there's anything else we read or watch that gives explanations on scheme, formations and so forth. You're probably aware of all of these, but I really like the QB School on YouTube, Seattle Overload videos (which are released on podcast but in some, they are watching film you can't see), and Oliver Connolly's Read Optional Substack. The latter puts way more content behind a paywall than you, but the free bits I read are usually interesting and sometimes enlightening. He didn't like the Walker or Charbonnet picks due to positional value, and some of his takes feel like following the narrative, but he understands scheme and explains it well.
I had no idea about Oliver. I'm not sure where I even found his Substack. And yeah, Matty clearly doesn't prioritize his. All the content he does, and there's hardly anything there. And what little there is is almost all behind a paywall. Doesn't invite people to keep checking it out.
Amazing article, and perfectly encapsulates why it's ok to feel more excited about the defence this year. That time to get the right personnel, and just have more time to build in more scheme work and line-ups. We'll have a better feel come August but nothing wrong with us fans getting a bit more excited now.
So Pete “Lewis” Carroll will be lining up early doors against a number of other teams running a 3 - 4 variant. That’s good to know. I thought we might be one of the only teams attempting to reanimate an archaic system with a gaping flaw he’d somehow forgotten about - you can run all over it. Will be fascinating to see them go head to head (though will be looking to Joe help explain it once he’s ‘Neo’d’ a ton of instructional NFL film)
I love defense. When the opposition has the ball and it’s third and one and the Seahawks defense stuffs the the play for a six yard loss hell that’s a 70 yard touchdown to me. You mentioned Bud Grant and I have always found it strange the Seattle’s first coach Jack Patera is from the Bud Grant tree as is of course Pete. Trivia question; Who coached in Super Bowls and also won as a player won an NBA title…..Bud Grant as a player with Minneapolis Lakers and coach of the Vikings. May the 12s be with you and Go Seahawks.
Lots of teams seem to be going to some version of a three man front. One way to beat it is to run against the CB's which is one of the reasons Pete doesn't draft or play CB's that don't tackle and attack against the run. Trying to run the 3-3-5 requires good tackling DB's and that's one of the reasons he drafted Witherspoon. I think we all learned along with Pete the difference between CB's who can run and tackle but rarely get INT's and ball hawking CB's who do get INT's. Griffin and Flowers were a grim pair and it's no wonder we let them go. Not many teams have aggressive tackling CB's.
I sure do appreciate all of the in-depth information. I'm going to be so very well informed for the upcoming season. I believe I'll look at the games in a very different way this year. Thanks SSJ
YEP - this is good!

I once hired Matty and Oliver for their first paid gigs. I could do wonders for them if they now hired me to consult on their substacks.

Best ever article by Seaside Joe, even before the weekly analysis.
Much appreciated, Darryl!
You are welcome.
Win the Bye. Go Hawks.

Nice Trivia! News to me, thanks Mcdude!

Good info to add/have. Thanks Stephen!
