Trying to check my happiness, but it's so much fun watching our 1's dominate the CLE 2's(ish). Defense looked great, offense looked great. So pumped for regular season.
DJ James really needed this performance tonight.... his game last week was disastrous with multiple missed tackles and penalties. He was making very sure tackles tonight, wrapping up well, and even putting the hit on a guy a couple times. Pritchett's tackling looked less than pro form, but he got the guys down. Mike Morris is a really big dude. He is noticeably large out there. Played well, but nothing exciting, so far. Rhattigan and Dodson looked decent. My 1st time seeing Dodson. Glad he is well enough to play. Helps my LB nervosa. LOVE the scheme on both sides of the ball. The pressure exerted by both units is palpable, especially the defense. When there is so much movement and amorphous positionings while the crowd is full-throat, the opponent is going to have a ton of pressure before even snapping the ball. Encouraging performances all around. Eskridge, Shenault, and Dee Wms all looked good, to complicate things. I'm getting excited!
Eskridge just missed a block on 4th down as I'm writing, but idk if I want to be asking Eskridge to be leading a back into a hole on 3th down. Let's hope Grubb considers personnell a little better than that gonig fwd.
It’s preseason. Grubb is asking a player to do more because the offense will demand it, and Shenault is someone proving they CAN do more — Eskridge’s tattered record shows he can usually barely show up. That’s why you check to see what he can do when healthy, and unfortunately we probably know the truth about why he doesn’t make the cut. And if you’re another team desperate for a guy, maybe Seattle gets something back for the tape of that kick return….
Patrick O'Connell was all over the field during the 1nd half. Jamie Sheriff played well. Marquise Blair only playing very late and getting his name called only once for just making a reciever hear footsteps on an incompletion is not a great sign for his chances
The last paragraph of this post says a lot. It’s hard to get an idea of players when they only play in their player group (i.e. starters, 2nds or 3rds). More so for certain positions that others, but it must have an affect on all positions. As you point out, Howell might be better with all the starters. I would imagine players like Macintosh and Shenault would too, for eg. I guess we need to trust the coaches and what they see at training coz we’ll never know otherwise when they don’t mix starters into the pre-season.
Eskridge just needs to go - run back or not! He Blew two assignments on blocks, one actually easy, he just doesn't need to be here. The O-line looked fine at the start, but surely went downhill quickly after this game's starters moved out. The D starters, seem to get what is going on! With a couple of others as we go down the list. Artie played fairly well. The second half D was surely a disappointment to everyone, BUT many of those players won't be here after Tuesday! Overall, with health factored in the Hawks should be looking very good to start the season.
The D was fast, they could actually tackle, the 1st and 2nd team secondary coverages were tight,
the scheme was as advertised, completely unpredictable. Loved it.
The O looked impressive
but the O line needs some help.
Sherrif is a keeper. He reminds me of John Randall. It may be a tough choice between Williams and Eskridge unless he gets injured again or they can keep both. They can't go into the season with Walker at QB 3.
Some good player will be cut and I'm sure there will be some surprise. The best part of this game is that, thankfully, there were no serious injuries.
The thing that impressed me all of this preseason, and especially tonight, was that overall tackling is so much better this year than the last few years under Pete. I don't know whether he stopped emphasizing tackling or what, but guys have been hitting hard AND wrapping up. I am looking forward to what this defense shows us this season.
Way too much room in the secondary after the 2's and 3's went in. Perhaps expected, but 300+ yards is not what we're looking to give up. MacDonald was not happy with that after the game, as one would expect. Hopefully Chenna's injury isn't serious. Artie's either.....he's had such a good camp and preseason.
I'd argue with the refs on Nwosu's penalty -- had the opportunity to see BOTH of the telecasts (NFL Network and Cleveland local station) due to an *unnamed* Canadian streaming service -- what I saw was that Nwosu had ahold of Winston's feet before he threw the pass, the actual roughing was another player (didn't catch number) arriving a split second afterwards -- NFL broadcast did not recap the play, Cleveland's did ...
One of the surprise performances came from the. 12’s, no rust there. Wonder what the attendance was, didn’t look like a full house, but sounded like it. That must have made a big impression on the rookies.
This weather is kind of pissing me off, but it did add to the football atmosphere, I’m so glad it’s just around the corner.
I have a funny feeling the new kickoff is going to favor one or two teams that have a really special player/set of players...ie the 'tush push' which one team figured out and ran it well ahead of the curve. BTW tush push was a terrible name....I use the term "push play" ...because for the Eagles it was as easy as - push play.
This was my kind of preseason game. We saw the starters…they were dominant (as they should be against Cleveland’s 2s). We saw a lot of decent plays from guys wanting to make the team. Laviska Chennault sure looks like a find. And we got a W.
Best of all, the beer was cold (my fridge is already in mid-season form).
Eskridge is a good example of why NFL players are well compensated. He clearly has speed and some talent and could have developed into a very useful player. Unfortunately for him, he was concussed on one of the first plays of his career and has never fully recovered. Years of hard work and practice destroyed in an instant. He isn’t the only, or even most prominent, player to have this happen. Honestly, I wish the league had a higher minimum salary with smaller contracts for bigger stars. All of those young men are putting their futures in jeopardy for our entertainment and deserve every dollar they earn.
Having said all of that, I suspect the punt return was “too little, too late” to secure a spot on the team for Dee.
I too would like to see a different pay system. One that does protect the lesser paid players and keeps runaway contracts from reaching ridiculous heights. Unfortunately, this is the world we live in right now.

*2nd half
Of all the second half guys the only two that really stood out to me were O'Connel and Sherriff!
and Okada.
Fun game. I am looking forward to the cut down. I expect to shed a few tears.

wish the 12s would go back to doing The Wave -- crowd favorite, seems to me the players felt invigorated by it -- other teams still doing it
DEE ! ! !
... pencil in one return TD a game now.

@seasidejoe
how much pre-writing do you do before a game?
