Whew! Thank you for allowing me to stop panicking about Dickson, now I can sleep at night.

It sucks that Murphy is out but how much was he actually contributing his rookie year? Like if Earl Thomas or Walter Jones went out their rookie year would it be comparable? What were his snap counts and how much was he actually contributing?

Don't get me wrong, I'm excited for him but is his production worth worrying about missing?

I always think back to that game in Earl's first season when Pete gave him some advice and he got multiple interceptions and really took off.

I'm actually seeing him make a real impact and I'm anxious if he's out. Hard to see interior DL standing out but in the limited views I get to see of him, think he's been an important piece of the puzzle. More worried about Williams for sure, but Murphy has been good as well

Just to clarify, Byron Murphy had a perfect grade for health. Now he doesn't have a perfect grade for health. That's why. Yes, I think the defense is going to be a little worse without him, but his presence on the stock down was only for that one reason.

He’s making significant impact. I’m curious if you feel/think same about Hankins. When a DLine guy is making two guys block him, he’s got impact. That’s their job. Last game on a late in half play he’s chasing the QB down who ultimately threw the ball out of the end zone. His absence will be felt. It’s a lot like last year when we basically only had JReed and Big Cat at end of year and everyone said our DLine was terrible why pay Williams etc. they were bad they were gassed.

Gotta be “down” on Jerome Baker and George Fant too, also bc of availability. Fant in particular has me anxious bc god forbid Cross goes down and Fant can’t back him up

Whereas my new FAVORITE big positive surprise is Forsythe, supplanting Hall because of how f…ed we’d be if he weren’t doing as well as he is. Amazing how well he’s playing!

And he now gets Hutchinson. Imagine how we’d be feeling without Forsythe. I’m staggered that I’m not all that anxious, but I’m not — at either tackle position. Never thought I’d say that

The first time I saw the '13 personnel' was a Waldron design against Detroit last year. He would have our 3 TEs behind Forsythe. We beat them, scoring a whole lot of points, but so did they. This year, we have a defense and MM has that game AND his tapes on the drubbing he gave them with his Ravens. I suspect he's had this game circled in RED on our schedule.

No comment about the punter because…. It’s the punter.

And as they say the best ability to have in the NFL is availability so I buy the down vote for K9 and Murphy BUT I if K9 plays this week I predict he will be “stock back up” next week.

I would be tempted to nominate Witherspoon for a “down” vote because of the penalties but on the other hand the W/W duo (Wrong Way—don’t pass here) has been special so far.

No offense, but of all the things I worry about regarding the Hawks ( the OL, Bradford, injuries , kick /punt returns and depth) Dickinson is close to last on my list.

It might be time to trade for at least a league average RG. The game against the Lions may prove how necessary moving on from Bradford may be!

If this article taught me anything, it's that I actually do think that Panic Room is my favorite Fincher movie.

Expand full comment
KHammarling's avatar

Fight Club stands clear in the Fincher list for me. I was lucky enough to see it in a cinema last year (I was 5 when it originally came out), such a great experience! I'd seen it before but, as with any in-cinema experience, the film takes on a whole other life. Dark room, big screen, and that final shot with a collective audience holding their breath, is quite something. [I am a fan of Panic Room too, and i don't hide my enjoyment of Alien 3 either].

My version of Panic Room is - Hot Fuzz! I've seen it so very many times, partly because it was just always on TV in the UK in the 2010's, partly because it's just amazing. I love Edgar Wright, and Scott Pilgrim vs The World is my most watch movie of all time, whilst Baby Driver is the film i've seen most often in a cinema. But i don't think i ever put Hot Fuzz on any of my favourites lists, but i'll never ever turn it off. I feel like i quote it daily, and then just forget about it whenever i talk about movies.

Ermm football... Dickson's punting is not where we'd hope. But also the Return yards surrendered are way up too! And our Kick Off's are also hardly amongst the leagues best. Does seem our ST unit has some all-round work to do. But it's nothing to panic about. As you say, Joe, maybe when it comes to the end of the year MM/JS have a call to make regard cap hit but Dickson is hardly playing bad enough to warrant a mid-season panic move. (for me, the double punt play, has earned him a lifetime spot on the team if he wants, i don't care)

Fight Club is the top of the list for me, too. I was taking an intro film studies course in college at the time it came out and learning to watch films more critically. Both Fight Club and American Beauty (also released that year) blew me away and will always be a little more special to me just because where I was in life when they came out.

Stone Forsythe has a long history of not playing very well. I'm glad he had a good game, and when your stock starts low it's easier to move up, but let's see some consistency before we get too comfortable with him as a starter (not that we have a choice). He's already a success story based on his draft value and career to date. Perhaps his greatest talent has been remaining available (knocking on wood right now). But, if we're gonna not panic about Dickson, let's also not expect too much from Forsythe just yet. If he plays poorly against Detroit, let's also not act as if that should be surprising. Good luck Stone. We need you right now.

He said stock up, not stock high. His stock has been in the penny stock range so can’t really go down. We definitely need him to play better and I hope he does!

I've wondered for a while if we fans from more rugby-centric countries put a higher value on punting, and on Dickson in particular, because of how much his game stands out compared to alot of the other punters in the league. He plays with an edge, a physicality that is much more familiar to like a kick-and-chase winger in Union. He's got an Aussie Rules background too right? The game where you're only allowed to kick, punch or tackle?

Expand full comment
KHammarling's avatar

There is a wealth of Punters with either Aussie Rules or Gaelic Football backgrounds, which i get. The act of punting (kicking) in both games carries some resemblance to punting in the NFL. And with the NFL continung to push it's international growth, it's comparitively easier to teach someone to punter/kicker than any other position, and would cost teams less to take a punt on them. Same applies at College, send a scout abroad and they can offer a terrific opportunity to a young ARF/GF player that their sport could never match.

The act of punting in rugby does also carry similarity. However in rugby, a good kicker is less specialized than in ARF or GF, as the primary kickers are the main on-field tacticians more akin to a QB. Also rugby has a much wider range of professional playing options than ARF or GF, and can thus better hold onto those talents and give career chances to a lower tier of player.

With Dickson, the Aussie vibe carries through. There are still few non-Americans in the NFL, and on the Seahawks, so anyone with a different vibe will stand out. Add in that, as SSJ notes, for a few years he was really one of the only top-tier NFL players we had, i'm not surprised a significant portion of the fan base is attached to him, myself included.

Dale's avatar

Ha ha. That’s an interesting way to describe Aussie rules.

Yes, he has an Aussie rules background, but he wasn’t a ‘known’ player here. Kicking is a main part of our game though (with other skills required) and it’s with an oval ball (not as pointy at the ends as the NFL ones), but similar - not round like the Irish ones.

We just had our Grand Final (ie Super Bowl) yesterday. So our season just ended.

"And if you want me to ignore the bad stats and say “Those are just because of field position and situation”, then I also have to ignore the good stats. We can’t pick and choose based on convenience."

I respectfully non-concur. That notion misapprehends the purpose of statistics and is a matter more of laziness than of convenience.

The correct notion is "THAT seems odd...I wonder why that is?", and then dig into the circumstances and situations that resulted in the statistics. This is the exact opposite of "if I blow THAT off then I have to blow THIS off". Which explains why the simplified-to-the-point-of-irrelevance statistics don't do a good job explaining how good a punter Dickson is, was, or will be.

As noted previously...lies, damn' lies, and...well, y'all know already where I stand on that.

Aside:

Ken, ol' buddy...if you want to refer back to your ranking thing in the explanations of "stock up and down", then you need to post some kind of a sticky link for the newbs & point to it every time you bring it up. I'm just sayin', that's all.

The Game would be my comfortable watch and would also be a movie I’ve seen many times but would be on my favs / top 5 or 10 list.

Totally agree that if you’re a top paid employee in any job / career, you have to deliver or run the risk you get “cut”.

Side note, read that Huff said “technique and power” is why Haynes isnt starting. Seems like he needs more time to develop.

Uh, yes. It is. But, I'll let you slide since you are now married. However, for me, on a scale of 1 to 2, with 2 being good and 1 being very, VERY, BAD.... That decision would get a 1.

I don't have a "Panic Room" movie. I love so many movies and will revisit many of them if the mood strikes. I thoroughly enjoy the art of storytelling (yes, the Outkast song of the same name, as well) and love allowing myself to escape reality briefly and be transported into the world of whatever movie I am watching.

I Just watched The Hudsucker Proxy on Netflix, again. Such a well-made and well-acted movie. Jennifer Jason Leigh was amazing in it. I only mention it because it was recent, and it is SO good. It isn't my go to, always.... just this week.

The Game is, in my opinion, his best film, by far. The themes, the acting, the side characters, the ending!! Michael Douglas is incredible, as is Deborah Unger. Subtle, intense, creative, not cheesy. Fincher at his best. Plus, i have daddy issues, so... i cant help myself. I love The Game.
