The Seattle Seahawks are letting the anticipation for the throwback uniforms that they’ll be wearing on October 29th against the Cleveland Browns build up like plaque, releasing announcements-to-the-announcement amid—of all times—Barbenheimer week.
On Twitter on Monday, the Seahawks updated their profile pic to a throwback logo and their banner to emphasize a July 19th release date for the new/old uniforms that they’ll be wearing in Week 8. Strange, wouldn’t it be more fitting to announce your clothes on a platform called Threads?
Pop Quiz Hotshot: When the Seahawks drafted Shawn Springs and Walter Jones with top-10 picks in the 1997 NFL Draft, which cornerback and left tackle were they replacing from 1996?
I’ll post the answer at the bottom of the newsletter.
For reasons nobody knows, the Seahawks made a cool teaser trailer to build up anticipation for a moment that is adequately anticipated…fans have been asking for throwbacks for many years and I do not imagine that the franchise will have a hard time selling the jerseys, memorabilia, or tickets for that game. If it sounds like I’m giving the team a hard time, it’s only because Monday was sort of sold as the reveal day, only to be the announcement of the reveal day and time.
“8:32 AM on Wednesday,” according to the team’s tweet.
Bills as “90s era”, I don’t consider myself much of an expert on differentiating any of Seattle’s uniforms prior to the significant overhaul that the team went through prior to 2002. Bleacher Report has a thorough breakdown of the timeline and I can’t tell if there even is a different between the eighties and the nineties.
To not miss the reveal, be sure to add your email here to join the Seaside Joe daily Seahawks newsletter: At least one article has gone out everyday since March 4, 2019.
Of all the Seahawks who should look interesting (I don’t want to say “look good” because this isn’t really about an aesthetics thing for me, just the fact that the entire team will essentially be wearing a uniform that we’ve never seen them in before which so rarely happens) I think fans probably lean towards wanting to see the longest-tenured veterans putting on the throwback uniforms: Tyler Lockett, DK Metcalf, and Bobby Wagner especially.
In fact, Wagner’s return couldn’t be better timed.
It will of course also be interesting to see the youngest key players—Devon Witherspoon, Jaxon Smith-Njigba, Charles Cross, Abe Lucas, Kenneth Walker, Zach Charbonnet, Riq Woolen, and so on—put on OLD uniforms while they are still NEW NFL players. That’s also unexpected.
For any fans waiting for the opportunity to buy a Seahawks throwback jersey (use promo code: TheyDontGiveSeasideJoePromoCodes at checkout), there’s got to be at least two dozen worthy options if you’re going to the Week 8 game against the Browns, and so forth. Not just the names I’ve mentioned already, but also Geno Smith, Michael Dickson, Dre’Mont Jones, Jamal Adams, Quandre Diggs, or Jason Myers. Unless you like “fun word” names, in which case you could choose Julian Love, or DeeJay Dallas if you’re from Dallas, Joey Hunt if you like to hunt, or Devin Bush, for fans of various bushes. (Also see: Bush, Arquon).
Jake Bobo, now is your time to shine.
I’ll add that there’s Myles Adams, for fans of more old school presidents, and literally a player on the roster named Benjie Franklin. We have a “no politics” rule on Seaside Joe, but not even I know exactly where Benjamin Franklin falls under that umbrella-only where he falls under a kite—and at least he’s a throwback president.
So there’s your schedule for the week: Wednesday: Throwbacks. Thursday: Go see Barbie. Friday: Go see Oppenheimer. Saturday: Subscribe to Seaside Joe.
Not a bad trip through the past or plans for the future.
Already two bonus articles this week: The Seahawks best bargains of 2023! Previewing the Seahawks DEFENSE headed into training camp!
Answer: Jones replaced James Atkins, who had started all 32 games at left tackle in the prior two seasons and then the final three games of Jones’ rookie campaign. The Seahawks went from Carlton Gray and Corey Harris as the starting corners in 1996 to Springs and Willie Williams. Gray played for the Colts after that season, while Harris moved to Miami and also moved over to safety for the Dolphins. He actually played six more season in the NFL after being let go by Seattle.
Remember those Barbizon commercials?
I mean, if it's throwback surely Thursday should be Toy Story 2, and Friday should be Memento. aka. Toymento!
