Sign him for 5 million, and a million per sack....

Signing 1-2 big name productive old guys is what may get us a SB, but it will definitely hamstring us in cap room for years after. I like think JS has learned from watching teams like LA get vets to make a SB run, then be in cap hell for a few years or more. Yes, LA, et. al., can still compete with those big contracts weighing them down, but how much easier will it be to be competing for a SB for 4-5yrs in a row or more if you manage your cap better with younger players instead of going all-in on one year then fighting uphill afterwards? No Watt. Amp up current guys until it hertz instead.

Sometimes, and only for the home team, paying too much for a player is “worth it” because of what that player means to fans and the team and the city. Do you keep paying Mean Joe big bucks? Alan Page? Yes. Yes. Largent? Yes. Tyler? Absolutely SJ! Until such time you cannot. But a GM also needs to keep looking forward. Steelers can pay Watt because Watt helps sell Steelers. Almost no other team though, except those really close to the Lombardi, can think to do so. League not like it used to be. But the greats payment is there for the home team. FYI Tyler in Tenn should be huge for Ward as a rookie. Might not get YAC but Tyler still better than nearly every other receiver in catch percentage and First downs.

Hope he doesn’t lose his Wattage.

He is fun to watch.

Way too much money though and losing a draft pick. No thanks.

May the the 12s be with you and Go Seahawks!

I'm a pretty firm believer that you don't take on a big money contract this late in the process unless there is weight to unload. Yes, there is some cap space, but not much, and the team has contracts of current players still to consider.

So, unless there is someone to unload to make that space (preferably in the same position group) -- and there isn't -- then it doesn't make much sense to do it, unless that player is the *one guy you need* to take you all the way.

I don't think there is anyone out there right now who is that guy for the Seahawks.

Now, if the Giants suddenly come to JS looking to shop Dexter Lawrence? Let's talk.

Any defense would love to have Watt, but I don't believe the MM defense depends upon the individual success of an edge rusher as much as other systems out there. He's more interested in disguising actual pressure and simulated pressure in different ways to confuse the offense into hesitating and making mistakes. It may be that edge rushers are more role players than stars in this system. Having ten guys with 3+ sacks at the end of the season may be a better indicator of success than having one guy with 20.

I know why TJ think he's 'earned' top dollar, but I equally know how many players of his age 'earn' top dollar. Not may. So a hard no for me. I respect the hell out of the guy, but caveat emptor. I saw 6 year deals handed out in the NHL today for 30 something athletes. That might look ok in year 1 and 2. But year 4, 5 and 6? That contact won't be looking so good. And in the NHL those contracts are guaranteed.

We may need a few FA's to take us over the top. But not this year.

You really have to look at the whole picture with these high dollar aging vet trades. For a top round draft pick plus $35+ million a year, you are basically going to net 4-6 more sacks than you would have with your existing roster. Whoever the Hawks decide to bury or trade: Mafe, Hall or Chenna would give them around 8 sacks so the net gain for all that money is only about 4-6 more sacks. That’s a Cleveland Browns move if ever I saw one.

Know what? No Watt! Need a high ceilng potential, younger, head banger for THOSE bucks. Macdonald's cooking with just the right portions of young talent and seasoned vets on Defense. Doesn't need more salty old dogs (Aaarrh🙄)...smells like a nice play-off stew without adding T.J. to the mix to me. I think it's time for lunch...

No. Save our money, Schneider. Pay it to our guys who shine out on the way to Super Bowls. Make it enticing to WANT to stick with the Team. Continue proving your Word is solid, get the Trust thing going and everybody gets rich. Being a gun-for-hire is not a happy existence. Becoming solid friends with everyone involved is. This sport is inundated with agents and their lawyers. This is their world. They will have us at each other's throat, robbing O-Line Peter to pay WR Paul. If someone wants to pay you an obscene sum, then go take it and maybe come back someday. No doubt JS will be all for it. Good for you. Good for the next man up. We don't work that way here. Sheesh. You are all making MILLIONs. Cut the drama. Fire the agents. Send the lawyers back to chasing ambulances. Let's have some fun doing this Living thing.

Thank you for this article. I was a hard no, but I used Trey Hendrickson as the ground work to get there. I can’t see adding even Hendrickson for 2 years at $35+ million per year, and that would be the minimum. It could be more. It would be more with Watt. I look at the 6 names you gave us yesterday, add Charles Cross (24 years old, btw) and next year’s group of extension candidates, JSN, Spoon, and D. Hall. I think we’re developing a core of players who will give the Hawks a chance at a Super Bowl. Although Watt might help this year, (maybe) his salary will hurt when it comes down to extensions for core players. It seems to me JS has been doing better at upgrading through the draft and being smart about free agency. I can’t wait to see the comparison between Will Fries and Zabel. My money is on the biggest difference between them will be how much more the Vikings paid for Fries. Booyah! Over paying now to slightly improve the chance of a Super Bowl this year is not the way to go. Keep adding pieces smartly, and hope that we hit on another draft next year. We’re getting there. I think we’re a 12+ win team this year, a division winner, and we will make the NFC championship game. Maybe in this Seahawk team, JS can not only get us to 2 super bowls back to back, but get us 2 wins.

This year we have a pretty good schedule. Washington is the only top 4 NFC team we play in season. No Detroit, Green Bay, Minnesota, or Philadelphia. I think it is unlikely we get past Philadelphia, but I see us possibly playing them in the NFC championship game. I do not recommend signing Hendrickson or Watt. The reason I don’t want to pay for an old currently elite player to improve chances now, it will be a huge cap hit for an aging and declining player. Let’s bank that money and give out 2nd contracts to some of the 7 players up this year, and the 4 players up next year.

I wanted to address O-line in round 2 and edge in round 1 of this year’s draft. We can go Edge next year. I say we roll with what we have, bank the cash and see what’s available next year.

Free agency was slim pickings this year. Maybe next year there will be a younger player who might have an impact. Spoon and JSN are going to be big cap hits. Cross and Lucas are going to be big hits. If Woolen figures it out and locks in, he will be a big hit. Mafe and Hall could still become the edges we need and will be biggish cap hits. I wanted to be able to trade Fant and increase the cap space. Forcing a Super Bowl run this year will reduce our window by years. We are positioning ourselves to be true contenders for years. Putting all your eggs in the basket for this year might work, but then one injury ends that and you’ve restricted yourself in future years. I love the restraint of JS. Maybe he goes too far, but he is getting better and changing. A true IOL at pick 18? I’m sure he now recognizes the need to build a quality O-line, even if he thought he could get away with being cheap there for 10 years. He is a sharp guy, and we could have an owner like the JETS or Browns. This team is run much better than most. Look at the pivot at OC. Maybe KK doesn’t work, but I love moving on as soon as you know it isn’t working. I love the culture they are creating. 100% 90 man attendance at Voluntary OTAs. Geno doesn’t like it here? Goodbye! DK doesn’t like it here? Goodbye! Everyone staying loves it here. You need that to be a Super Bowl team. Let’s win 12 this year, see where we go, then let’s show KC how to threepeat.

We have a great schedule...although it doesn't test us as much as others. But if we can right the offense and keep the defense up we're in a great spot. Let's go Hawks! Danno for president!

I’m really feeling good about the offense and the team KK has. I think we’ll have a top 12 offense and perhaps a top 5 defense. That’s a 12 win team, right? I know MM want a top 1 defense. I know that’s why all the vet players have been to voluntary OTAs. They want it too. If we beat SF and Pitt, in games 1 and 2, and the offense looks to be good, maybe was can give Philly a run for their money.

If you believe we're at 12 wins, then that leads me to believe we're in Superbowl range. Just need a piece or two? Premier edge or plug and play OL if no one steps up? Or an elite corner if Woolen or Jobe isn't quite the answer? 12 wins means you're close if not there already imo. Part of me says let's see how this goes and then add as we see fit. Part of me says let's ramp up and get ready to shock some people...why not this year?

You know what? If the ‘Hawks were stronger at WR and had better depth at ILB and DB, I’d say to go for it. Even off his peak, Watt would bring a lot to the table—arguably enough to make the team a candidate for going deep into the playoffs. At some point, you have to take risks. That’s a better bet than being too clever by half (see my comment above).

Just think: If PCJS hadn’t decided that Malik McDowell plus the 95th, 111th, 187th, and 249th overall* were more valuable than Watt, this would be a Seahawks problem.

* Respectively, Lano Hill, Tedric Thompson, Mike Tyson, and Chris Carson. And fans think the Jamal Adams trade was bad.
