I think it highly unlikely JS will trade up this year, simply because we don't have the 2024 draft capital to do it. JS will more likely try to add draft capital, not further deplete it. I do not understand all of the JJ McCarthy hype at all. He is probably the QB that requires the most 'projection' to see what he could become. That does not seem like someone you'd spend a high 1st round pick on. Yes, I know, he's a QB, so.....
Fun to look back on the players of the past that were real studs and play makers. Still remember arm wrestling Jacob Green in a stereo store I worked in in Bellevue in the early 80's. He and a few other players came in the store. I held him up for a little bit. I think Easley was among the players.
My prediction is Seattle trades back with Carolina, which doesn't have a 1st round pick. Seattle trades pick 16 for Carolina picks 33 and 65. They then pick an offensive and defensive lineman with picks 33 and 65. They take a linebacker with pick 81, and a Safety and tight end with their two 4th round picks. You can hold me to that. Of course don't blame me if JS screws things up ;)
I like the premise of this trade and Carolina makes sense as a team looking to move up, but I'm not convinced the value makes sense. That's a long way to move back just to add pick 65! Based on the couple of draft value charts I looked at, we'd need more. Maybe they also give us a 2025 3rd, or we get both their 2nds for our 1st and 4th? I don't think we'd do any of this unless our draft board got wiped out by the first 15 picks.
Thank you. I think you're right. Whether we trade back or not depends on who is available. Given the possibility so many QBs will go before 16, there just might be someone they can't pass up on selecting at 16. In reality, this might be best for them.
I believe overall ,more misses than Hits- You have 1983 (Blair Bush) 2000 a good job, 2001 maybe best ever- 2009 very good (Earl) with recently 2015 and 2020 as probably the worst ever.! Two of those involving Top Notch centers. One good ,one Horrible- I do like the idea of ( Unless JS see's a QB he is in love with) Getting either a Center, a NT/DT and a LB. Go Hawks!
Seemed like as many misses as hits. The guys moving up, whether it was us or the other guys, seemed to get the better of the deal. But WANTING to move up means you really like a guy and KNOW he;s gonna be a star. Or did you move up because you NEED a certain position filled? Even if we don't do that, the other team might and that might make better players available. Those players taken a round earlier than you expected.
I'm all for believing in the vision of one guy who has control of all the strings. Sort of like pirates of old, you ride with the captain so long as it's profitable. When everyone starts dying and going to jail, changing course makes sense. But just as in Highlanders, there can be only one! Two captains of a ship or plane never works. A team has to believe in the vision of the coach and GM. So if they see someone who will really make a difference, than go for it. Walter Jones was worth it.
Opportunity often moves in minutes, not hours or days. You can't run things by committee. My bet is Pete and John could originally decide something quickly, with minimal misses and their instincts aligned. Frustrations grow over time. Nature's Law.
Unless JS is in love with somebody, I see 16 for a a mid 20 1st and a top 20 2nd and maybe more if some QB needy really likes someone at 16. It happens every draft!
After watching the video embedded in the post the other day on Drake Maye, he looks like he needs to polish a lot of mechanics.
After JS got Howell, whom he wanted in the draft originally, I don't really see him drafting a QB with 16, unless he's in love with a guy who somehow falls from a spot he couldn't trade up to. Howell is still as young or younger than the guys coming out this year, and there is a lot less unknown about him since he has played at this level already, and looked at least half decent.
The League now has film on young Sam's tendencies, making Year 2 a nightmare for rookie QBs. By sitting, he can now coach-up on how to use those expectations into a tool. Running a completely new offense is the best gift Howell could ask for. Give'm Hell, Boy.
I agree that Maye fits the profile of a JS QB and he is the only player the Seahawks would trade up for.
I also think that it is possible though unlikely that the Patriots are willing to trade instead of drafting him for a king’s ransom of three firsts and two seconds to build their team. That is well above the chart value but this is a sellers market what it is like going to take because moving back to 16 puts the Patriots at the outer the edge of the premium players in the draft with a first round grade. Whereas a trade with the Raiders or Vikings, both of whom are likely to also be bidding, gets the Patriots more capital this year including still being in range to draft a top corner or tackle. So the Seahawks were going to have to over pay.
(Broncos also want to move up but they like the Seahawks don’t have a lot of capital this year).
A hypothetical trade with the Vikings for 11 makes no sense because they are moving up for a QB.
No for this to work the Vikings have to want McCarthy instead of Maye and trade with the Patriots for him, the Cardinals have to stick and pick Harrison, Giants have to pass on Maye and select Oduze. Falcons pick a tackle or a cornerback Titans pick a tackle and Bears decide to move back by trading with Seahawks.
The likelihood of all that happening is why Geno is still the starting QB.
To clarify, there's no intention to sway opinion for or against a trade up with this article. I am not for or against trading up for a player, the only thing I'm against is having a hard-and-fast annual rule like that with no exceptions. I don't think "never trade up" or "always trade down" or "always stick and pick" or "never stick and pick" should always be the case every year. Make the best decision based on what the draft board universe is giving you in a given moment. For example, you wouldn't "not trade up for patrick mahomes" if you could go back in time just because that would break your rule to never trade up.
This article might sound like I was "for" trading up, but that's not necessarily the case. Just not for or against anything other than doing what's best for the franchise. I wanted to see the history of trading up and I was just surprised that with the help of coincidence, those 5 trade ups worked out really good. But then I think trading a first for a player is almost the same as trading up and a lot of those trades worked out horribly.
Well, it sort of made me think about trading up to ten or something for whoever, the next Walter Jones or Cortez Kennedy. I'm not thinking QB. That is the sexy XXX position, and almost everyone who doesn't love Geno because he isn't Mahomes gets horny for the sexy positon and sometimes will try to fit a round peg into a square hole. To me, when they traded for Howell, I just figured our search is over for now.
Looks like most trades were either home runs (Walter Jones, Cortez Kennedy, Hass and Hutch, the Wilson trade, or were complete busts. Few ended up being relatively even for both teams.
I don’t think JS should only trade up for a QB. If Schneider thinks there is a Walter or Cortez equivalent, I’m good with that.
Trading Max Unger was a huge loss for the Seahawks. He called protections superbly 'n was the glue that held the O-line together. We never did recover from that loss.
Thinking it over, this might be the best trade in Seattle sports history. It even somewhat takes the sting out Woody Woodward dealing Jason Varitek and Derek Lowe for Heathcliff Slocumb.
The trade for Jamal Adams just kills me. It's unlikely they would have drafted the same players but Darrisaw and Garrett Wilson would look really good in Seahawk colors. Instead the have $20 million in dead cap.
For once I'd like to see us field a really good offensive line, starting at pick 16. Give those big guys something to Hoot about and our QBs some heroes to wine and dine.
They need to have a Top Flight center to make that happen! Supposedly the Oregon Guy is just that. I believe ( with maybe one more FA pickup along the way) they have enough guys that can play the guard spots , and because two of them have center experience it isn't as tough for them go slide over and pick it up quickly-
Most of these guys aren't fully developed until 26-27. Seems our Hawks try to find guys who will grow into the position. While Olu was a great college Center, it may be he works best as an NFL Guard?

There is no Walter equivalent.
Arguably the best ever at his position. Mike Holmgren says that Walter is the best offensive player he coached.
Trading Max Unger was a huge loss for the Seahawks. He called protections superbly 'n was the glue that held the O-line together. We never did recover from that loss.
“2001: Trade 10 (Jamal Reynolds) and 72 to Packers for QB Matt Hasselbeck and 17 (Steve Hutchinson)”
By far the best trade in franchise history. Dwarfs the Russell trade. After that, the trades for Walter Jones and Cortez Kennedy.
Thinking it over, this might be the best trade in Seattle sports history. It even somewhat takes the sting out Woody Woodward dealing Jason Varitek and Derek Lowe for Heathcliff Slocumb.
For the record, in his 3-yr career, DE Jamal Reynolds played in 18 games with no starts and had three sacks.
The trade for Jamal Adams just kills me. It's unlikely they would have drafted the same players but Darrisaw and Garrett Wilson would look really good in Seahawk colors. Instead the have $20 million in dead cap.
I was just typing a similar comment. Those are 2 high end young players, tough to see how the picks might have been used.
You win some, you lose some. No one knew that Adams would be unable to stay on the field.
Brian Burns was just traded for a 2nd and a 5th. Two firsts and change for Adams never made sense, particularly without a new contract in place.
There is a trade coming that will net at least 1 second round pick. JS won't have just one pick through to the end of Rd 2.
We should try to trade more with the Broncos!
Not.nice!
