Seahawks trade ideas: A deal for every John Schneider connection in the NFL
8 trade fits for Geno Smith, Tyler Lockett, Quandre Diggs, as well as moves to acquire an elite edge rusher or offensive weapon: Seaside Joe 1815
John Schneider’s trade history is surprisingly not littered with past connections, as it wasn’t as though the Seahawks were constantly dealing with the Packers after he arrived in Seattle 14 years ago. Instead, it was more that Schneider and Pete Carroll had GMs and teams who they trusted—like Howie Roseman with the Eagles, for example—and when the Seahawks were anxious to make a deal they would call Philadelphia or Detroit or Oakland or Minnesota before going to whichever team had the best offer or the type of player who they wanted.
But now Pete Carroll is out of the picture and trades would appear to be entirely up to Schneider’s discretion. How will that impact the Seahawks on the trade market at a time when they also have new connections forming around the league, in addition to the longstanding ones?
As not only does Seattle have a “Seahawks-South” team forming in Carolina, a former offensive coordinator in Chicago, and an old friend who is a powerful new head coach in Washington, they also have Mike Macdonald’s input and his connections back in Baltimore. If the Seahawks make trades this offseason (and they make trades every year so what’s to stop Schneider now that he has the most power?) will those connections come into play?
Today’s Seaside Bonus article for Regular Joes aims to answer that question and propose ideas for every franchise that has a significant connection to the Seahawks, including:
Carolina Panthers - GM Dan Morgan, HC Dave Canales, TE coach Pat McPherson, passing game coordinator Nate Carroll
Is it entirely coincidence that the Panthers want to get the most out of 5’10 QB Bryce Young and then place a “Russell Wilson development cadre” around him?
Chicago Bears - OC Shane Waldron, QB coach Kerry Joseph, RB coach Chad Morton
Gearing up to select Caleb Williams with the number one pick in the draft, the Bears enlist not only Seattle’s former OC but allow Waldron to bring with him a quarterbacks coach and running backs coach to Chicago. Does the team stop short of letting Waldron recruit a player or two to the Bears?
Washington Moons - HC Dan Quinn, ST Coordinator Larry Izzo
It’s been a minute since Quinn was with the Seahawks. That didn’t stop him from interviewing with Seattle or hiring such familiar names as Izzo, Ken Norton, Darryl Tapp, and Bobby Engram on his coaching staff.
Philadelphia Eagles - DL coach Clint Hurtt
If the Eagles were Game of Thrones, Clint Hurtt would be like Hodor in the line of succession, in that there are many more relevant decision makers in front of him. However, he was the defensive coordinator in Seattle for two seasons and his input may be used if and when Schneider has a phone call with Roseman.
L.A. Chargers - WR coach Sanjay Lal
As connections to the Chargers go, Seattle’s special teams coordinator is also the son of L.A.’s head coach. That can’t be entirely irrelevant.
Cleveland Browns - OL coach Andy Dickerson
In Cleveland, Dickerson will be replacing one of the most experienced NFL offensive line coaches in history.
Baltimore Ravens - Mike Macdonald
Macdonald started working with John Harbaugh a decade ago and Baltimore’s head coach is also the uncle of Seahawks special teams coordinator Jay Harbaugh.
There is a lot of baseless speculation to cover in today’s bonus article, but keep these points in mind:
a) The Seahawks are going to trade somebody and/or trade for somebody
b) The Seahawks are in a period of significant change, which means that there is likely to be some semblance of “house cleaning” to follow the coaching moves
c) If the Seahawks are to make said moves, wouldn’t it make sense to create opportunities for a reunion? An example would be when the Dolphins hired Mike McDaniel in 2022 and signed his 49ers running back Raheem Mostert, who scored 21 touchdowns and made the Pro Bowl last season.
If you are to read any writer’s baseless speculation on what the Seattle Seahawks could potentially do in the offseason, I HIGHLY recommend you get it from Seaside Joe. I say without bias that he not only has the highest winning percentage for his predictions, he has also written more articles about this team than any other person on the planet (earth).
This is a bonus article, which means that it is exclusive to Regular Joes paid subscribers. Great news: It’s an extraordinary value of only $5 per month or $55 per year. Someone out there reading this has been a free subscriber for over a year and has been waiting for the right time to support and I’m here to say that today is the perfect day to make the jump. Let’s get at least five new Regular Joes today:

Here are EIGHT Seahawks trade proposals with all of their relevant coaching and front office connections around the NFL. A sneak preview of what’s to come if you’re still unsure if you should join the premium club: I have trade proposals for Seattle to acquire among other things: an elite tight end, three different EDGE upgrades, as well as the perfect fits for Geno Smith, Tyler Lockett, Quandre Diggs, Julian Love, an OL swap involving Charles Cross, and just to appease Mike Salk, a home for DK Metcalf, often while also upgrading the Seahawks 2024 draft position.
Carolina Panthers - GM Dan Morgan, HC Dave Caneles, and so on
Though I think of Dan Morgan as the ultimate Panther (how many teams can say that they ended up drafting their GM in the first round as a player?), he spent 2010-2017 as an executive under Schneider and Carroll and thanked them in his opening press conference as the new GM. Morgan has been Carolina’s assistant GM since 2021 and was promoted as both GM and president of football operations last month. Now add Canales to that, Seattle’s wide receivers coach the entire time that Morgan was with the Seahawks, and was promoted to QBs coach in 2018, also served two years as the passing game coordinator, you’ve got an undeniable connection back to Schneider and Geno Smith.
Here are two trade ideas between the Seahawks and Panthers that might fit under that umbrella:
