Seahawks training camp notes from Sunday: Riq's Return
Riq Woolen comes back to the field, Dre'Mont Jones is helped off of it: 8/6/2023
The Seattle Seahawks activated Riq “Drop the Ta’, just ‘Riq, it’s cleaner” Woolen from PUP and the Pro Bowl cornerback debuted at 2023 training camp practice on Sunday. Woolen wasn’t put into drills and reps at 100% as the team will work him back step by step, but Pete Carroll made it clear that he is going to start at right cornerback.
That leaves the competition at left cornerback down to Michael Jackson, Devon Witherspoon, Tre Brown, and if we’re being very technical and fair (but it won’t be him), Artie Burns.
With four options to protect that side of the field—all of whom have at least some argument to start and most of whom would be starting if they played for the majority of teams in the NFL—the Seahawks should end up with a very good cornerback in the nickel. I would be surprised if that nickel wasn’t Witherspoon most of the time, but it’s not where the fifth overall pick necessarily should be playing if he’s the best option to play left cornerback.
Woolen should be back to practicing at full strength well before the end of training camp. Seattle opens the preseason on Thursday at Lumen Field against the Minnesota Vikings and Seaside Joe will have a couple of more training camps to cover plus a game preview plus roster news and somehow even more to cover than that in the next three days…
If you didn’t catch the update on Sunday’s free Seaside Joe article about who the Seahawks would sign to take Andrew Whitaker’s place on the roster, check it out here because Seattle’s news dropped about a half-hour before my scheduled 7:15 AM PST article that didn’t know the roster would change that early!
