The Seahawks released starting linebacker Tyrel Dodson, with the news first reported by ESPN’s Brady Henderson. This marks the second midseason admission by John Schneider that he whiffed on a free agent linebacker following the Jerome Baker-Ernest Jones trade. In a corresponding move, the Seahawks signed cornerback Josh Jobe to the 53-man roster and receiver-turned-tight end N’Keal Harry was added to the practice squad.
The news comes one week after the newsletter on why the Seahawks should bench Dodson for Tyrice Knight, among other moves Seattle needs to make for the future.

The Seahawks signed Dodson to a one-year contract worth up to $4.26 million, which was also his 2024 cap hit. The dead money and the cap savings is insignificant at this point, but allocating $4 million to a linebacker that isn’t good enough to finish the season was certainly not what Schneider or Mike Macdonald had planned.
Henderson predicts that either Tyrice Knight or Drake Thomas will start against the 49ers next week alongside Jones.
Share Your Thoughts on Tyrel Dodson and John Schneider:
Dodson never earned a starting role during his four years with the Buffalo Bills. He was put into the starting lineup for 10 games in 2023 due to an injury to star linebacker Matt Milano, but it was telling that he had never earned a starting role out of training camp. The Seahawks gave Dodson those keys in Seattle and now they’ve released him after nine starts, meaning he had even fewer opportunities when he was handed the job as opposed to when he was the fallback option.
Dodson’s Seahawks career ends with 71 tackles, two sacks, one forced fumble, and five tackles for a loss. He was also blamed for seven missed tackles and like most linebackers has been a frequent target in pass coverage.
OvertheCap’s Nick Korte notes that in a way, Dodson also cost the Seahawks a 6th round pick because he cancelled out the free agent loss of Colby Parkinson:
Per the Seahawks, the Seahawks signed Josh Jobe to the 53-man roster and added N'Keal Harry to the practice squad. Harry was a workout last week.
I’m glad. Team isn’t afraid to make some moves, and I’m sure this is the first of many before the season even ends.
