This is not a Week 2 game recap, but a look at how each game somehow relates to the Seattle Seahawks—and sometimes how it relates to Seaside Joe because not every game impacts the Seahawks.
Chiefs 27, Chargers 24 (TNF)
I feel like Justin Herbert is one of my own because I banked a lot of credibility on him through the 2020 draft season. He’s not letting me down. I’ll get to my 2020 draft mistake soon. Gerald Everett had 71 yards for the Chargers. Frank Clark had two tackles and he has no sacks yet this season. Carlos Dunlap had three tackles for Kansas City. Former Washington State Cougar Jaylen Watson had a 99-yard pick-six. The Seahawks play the Chargers in Week 7 and the Chiefs in Week 16…those will be tough games.
Maybe just tough games to watch.
Dolphins 42, Ravens 38
You ever just smoke a joint and watch the Dolphins-Ravens highlights two times in a row? These are the types of offenses (and defenses) that Seattle fans are dreaming the franchise will turn into. There were great plays in all phases of the game, elite talent all over the field. Tua Tagovailoa is playing a lot better than I expected (2020 draft mistake). I said Lamar Jackson should have taken the money but he’s looking smarter than me so far. Both quarterbacks, both offenses, extremely exciting. Seattle wanted to grab Mike McDaniel as OC in 2021, instead he became the Dolphins head coach in 2022. He’s now 2-0.
Jets 31, Browns 30
The Jets and Browns are both literally starting their backup quarterbacks, Joe Flacco and Jacoby Brissett, but the offenses seem much more capable of throwing the ball down the field than Seattle’s. Just something to think about. Also, the Seahawks may need to add a bridge quarterback or a high-end backup in 2023. The Nick Chubb/Kareem Hunt tandem is exactly what the Seahawks want out of Ken Walker III and Rashaad Penny. Jadeveon Clowney had a sack and a FF. D.J. Reed had five tackles for New York. Robert Saleh’s Jets, Seaside Joe’s pre-season pick for the surprise team of the year, is 1-1.
Rookie kicker Cade York missed a critical extra point.
Patriots 17, Steelers 14
Think of two paths at quarterback: One is using a first round pick on Mac Jones, the other is signing the top free agent quarterback Mitchell Trubisky. What’s the better option? You can definitely argue against both, go with Geno Smith and Drew Lock instead, wait until next year. Trubisky has gotta go and you know you have been deemed “Allowed To Be Clowned On Now” by all of Twitter when Albert Breer joins in on the clowning.
But Jones doesn’t offer much hope for the future. Feels more like a bridge quarterback first round pick and that’s not what first round picks are meant to do. I think I was also wrong about Mac Jones in 2021—he went too high.
Jaguars 24, Colts 0
Matt Ryan went 16-of-30 with three interceptions. The Colts traded a third round pick AND guaranteed him $53 million over two years. Seattle’s choice to go with Drew Lock and Geno Smith and pay them nothing looks GREAT.
Giants 19, Panthers 16
It’s too early to say that the Giants will win too many games to pick ahead of the Seahawks in the draft, but they are now 2-0. Baker Mayfield was 14-29, 145 yards, 1 TD, and a QBR of 16. Former Seattle exec Scott Fitterer, now GM of the Panthers, may be on the hot seat. We have to consider Carolina a dangerous threat to pick first in 2023 and they will be selecting a quarterback. The Seahawks play the Panthers in Week 14.
Bucs 20, Saints 10
The Seahawks play the Saints in Week 5, the Bucs in Germany in Week 10. Jameis Winston had three interceptions. Seattle wisely made no push to sign Winston as a free agent.
Something I’m noticing is that you can tell a lot about a team based on how many former coaching assistants and players you find around the league at the present time. The Seahawks used to have a lot more examples of those in the past than they do right now.
Lions 36, Commanders 27
Suddenly playing well against the Lions in Week 4 doesn’t seem as likely as it once did. Detroit has scored 71 points in two games. The Seahawks have scored 24. J.D. McKissic had seven catches for 54 yards for Washington.
Rams 31, Falcons 27
I think people are overrating the Falcons a little bit, suggesting that the 0-2 record isn’t indicative of how well they’ve played. But Atlanta was down 28-3 on Sunday and could have been blown out playing a quarterback who isn’t as forgiving as Matthew Stafford is sometimes. Like Carolina, the Falcons are a strong contender for the top pick and would select a quarterback.
The Seahawks play the Falcons in Week 3 and there’s probably more on the line for the draft than for the NFC playoffs. I’m not sure Seattle has an answer for Drake London right now. The rookie receiver had eight catches for 86 yards and a touchdown, he might be the best first-year receiver through two games. Expect Tariq Woolen against London to be a highlight matchup.
Bobby Wagner had a sack for L.A.. The Rams are now 1-1. Stafford has five interceptions in two games.
Broncos 16, Texans 9
A worse game for Russell Wilson than his first one. Reportedly getting booed by the home crowd…again. Wilson was 14-31, 219 yards, one touchdown, one interception. More strange clock management by Denver.
Cardinals 29, Raiders 23 (OT)
A scary good fourth quarter for Kyler Murray. Did so without DeAndre Hopkins. The Seahawks play the Cardinals in Week 6. All four NFC West teams are now 1-1. The Seahawks play the Raiders, now 0-2, in Week 12 after a bye. Former Huskies corner Byron Murphy had the game-winning fumble recovery return touchdown.
Cowboys 20, Bengals 17
Cowboys are 1-1, Bengals are 0-2.
Packers 27, Bears 10
Another notable running back duo is Aaron Jones and A.J. Dillon: 33 carries, 193 yards. My name is Kenny and my dog’s name is Clark so a player who has a notable name duo is Kenny Clark.
I'm really enjoying this season. Not expecting to win allows me to just watch and enjoy. Our team, other teams, guys we let go playing superhero. Whatever.
Yesterday I tried to not land to hard on the Seahawks, because they were coming off a emotional win and they were one day short on preparation. The preparation doesn't belong here. The players were on their normal schedule, the coaches would have been working a little harder but they had all summer to get ready for the first two games.
Why does it seem so difficult for us to use our dynamic weapons. We all saw the all world class catch DK made only to be wiped out by a good penalty, I say good as it was a aggressive mistake by a rookie. Tyler had over 100 yards. Funny last year Geno had a hard time locating Tyler but did well with DK.
I want to see Shane Waldron mixing it up in who is the number one target, and calling a good game. One where he anticipates what the defense is going to do. Having an answer for the defensive questions that are been asked. Right now teams know we are going to run with Penny or KW3, and pass to DK or Tyler. In week one we used the tightends well, something we haven't seen since Jimmy Graham. If we are being honest we were good at finding Jimmy for touchdowns, thee most important thing. He was not very effective between the 20s. We need to scheme open our third and fourth receiver and all three tightends. If we can spread the ball around better, KW3 and Penny will be awesome.
I didn't mind the call to have DJ Dallas throw the ball. Yes there were many other easier plays. The truth is DK was open and it was not a hard throw. Did Dallas squeeze the ball to tight or was it a case of over finess. I felt sorry DJ as that was an ugly throw. I do not have access to the full eleven tape, which would tell us if we missing opportunities. We have a number of Questuons on defense but that's for another day.
For everyone who is hoping Drew Lock will get to play soon, tamp down your enthusiasm as this was just game two and Geno did okay in game one
