Last year, I was putting out regular updates on my top-10 quarterbacks for the 2022 draft and ultimately it wasn’t until late November and December that I was really clear about the fact that no prospect other than Kenny Pickett would be suited for the first round. There were many moments when a prospect would stand out for a week or a month, but those players, like Desmond Ridder, Malik Willis, Will Levis, Tanner McKee, all crashed out of high-ranking positions on my list after underwhelming performances.
Not even Pickett stood out in stellar fashion. His senior season breakout was not on par with Joe Burrow in 2020 or Zach Wilson in 2021. However, he was the only prospect who consistently showed up every week with a good game, had a great arm, and checked boxes for size and poise.
So my lesson from last year was to not judge too soon. There have only been two college games this season for each notable 2023 quarterback prospect so far and I’m not going to make many definitive statements from seeing good performances. I might, however, have more to say when I see a player have a really bad game.
I think we might learn more from those outings than the good outings.
In the summer, I had my top-five ranked as Bryce Young, Grayson McCall, C.J. Stroud, Tyler Van Dyke, and Devin Leary. There is a lot of time left for others to climb into the top five and to replace one or three of these names. I have not yet seen reasons to drop any of them out.
Maybe there are just eight guys who I’m monitoring more closely at this moment for next year’s draft. I get a lot of people commenting about Levis and I’ve maintained that he needs to play better this season than he did last season. So far, he hasn’t been. I also said I wouldn’t judge Anthony Richardson until he had actually played college football and we are still waiting for his first touchdown pass of the season—there’s just not enough data to go off of yet.

I hope everybody has a great game and a great career but, please God, don't let the SeaHawks draft the kid from Clemson. I really don't want to learn how to pronounce his name.
