Why is a member of Team Gleason claiming on Hinge that Steve Gleason is faking ALS?
The internet gets even wilder...
First, an LSU student named Dylan Sanders posted a screenshot on Twitter from the dating app called Hinge. In the screenshot, “Alyssa” writes that her most controversial opinion—a preloaded Hinge question designed to spark conversation—is that former Saints player Steve Gleason has been faking his ALS condition for 11 years.
That should break the ice.
Within an hour, another LSU student, “Molly” aka @malimia_, replied to the tweet with another fascinating claim about “Alyssa”: That she is an LSU nursing student who literally works directly with Steve Gleason and is a member of “Team Gleason” and it is impossible to dispute the similarities between the two Alyssas in question.
Gleason, a native of Spokane, Washington and a dual sport athlete at Washington State University from 1996-1999 was diagnosed with ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease, in 2011. It’s not just a claim that Gleason made without any evidence: a documentary named “Gleason” that covered his entire journey with ALS up to that point was released in 2016.
Now before we make any claims on our own about Alyssa or Steve Gleason, let’s keep these possibilities in mind:
The Hinge screenshot is doctored (It doesn’t appear that the claims of Alyssa working with Team Gleason are false, as those are verifiable on the internet as to have not been doctored)
Alyssa was making a joke
The Hinge profile is not the real Alyssa; potentially another person created a fake Hinge profile to set this up and we can’t rule out the Twitter users — who were unbelievably quick to discover this is a Team Gleason member — as being aware of the profile as fake
There are a lot of people on the internet who spread false information, certainly even more who are lying on their dating profiles about who they are. What is not clear is why someone would lie about somebody else’s life to advance their own interests; whether that’s a person on Hinge or a person on Twitter.
What is abundantly clear is that Steve Gleason is not the one telling lies.
