Kenneth, although I'm a big, big fan of Pete we all know retirement is coming. I'd like to read a column on when and who. Is Sean Desai being groomed? What will it mean for John when Pete goes? Just questions I'd like to see you bat around someday. Thanks.

Lockett damn well better be good for four more years. His contract numbers are downright scary. He get's $10 mil in 2022, $16 mil in 2023, $24 mil in 2024 and 2025. The first chance to get out would be 2024 by taking a $14 MILLION dead money hit. Even in 2025 it's a $7 mil dead money hit.

The good news is that Lockett is a savy, techincally sound player whose happens to be fast. Even if he loses a step, he'll still be able to get open. He has that feel. We'll still throw the long ball but I doubt it will be nearly as often without Russ and that's a good thing. I got sick and tired of seeing Russ launch a forty yard sideline bomb to a covered Lockett when all we needed was four yards for a first down and Dissly stood alone, five yards away. I'd like to think that Lockett has some Steve Smith in him. That dude played 16 years and had 70 catches in his age 37, final season. Please let Lockett be Steve Smith.

I guess it all depends on who our QB is to start the season. I still don't expect it's someone currently on the roster; but the longer it goes, the harder it's going to be to integrate someone new into our system/language/familiarity with our WRs/etc.

Yes, it depends on who's starting, the talent of the QB and the level of chemistry. If it's anything like dance, something I know about, chemistry with a partner can be like magic. Something that's just there from the first moment. It can also be something that develops, which is more common, or something that never develops between two incompatible partners. So we'll see what happens. Lock apparently has some chemistry with Fant.

I've no doubt Locket and DK will suffer this year. How can they not? Wilson was the best deep ball chucker in the NFL. I don't know when Locket's career will decline but the fact that he relies on speed means more likely sooner than later. I expect Kupp to last longer because he shines based on freakish football IQ and route running skills. Guys like that tend to stick around longer. Tom Brady's an example at QB. His arm was never great and it's less now than ever before. His mobility was never great and it too is worse now. And yet he remains truly dangerous because he's so smart and processes his options so quickly.

Maybe. DK should be a monster on short crossing routes but Wilson rarely threw those even when they were open. Clearly Lockett will miss the special connection he and Russ had but Lockett depends as much on savy and his ability to create seperation as he does speed. The thing I disagree with is the importantance of the long ball. Defensive hesitation is created by an effective running game countered by a quick and accurate short passing game (and aspect Russ didn't seem to be good at). Do either of our QBs have the kind of accuracy and timing required to make Waldron's offense go? If the answer is no then you're correct Metcalf and Lockett will suffer but not because of the deep ball.

I don't see it as all one thing or another. Certainly, losing the best long-ball passer in the NFL is going to have an impact. But I agree that it's not the only element to consider. It's not like Russ was ever the best QB in the NFL. At his best, he was top 5 over a full season, though there were runs where he seemed like the best. He had and has weaknesses.

It's not likely Lock will be anywhere near as good as Russ overall but I'd love to be wrong. I'm not going to mention Gino because his ceiling has been clear for a long time. I guess anything's possible. Years ago, when I was a child, I remember Jim Plunkett suddenly getting better in his early to mid thirties and then playing some awesome football. But that sort of thing is truly rare. How many times have we ever seen that in NFL history (among QBs)?

Tyler Locket is not likely to loose a step anytime soon. He is at best 179lbs I doubt that, but it's his listed weight. He isn't packing any fat and his muscles have been trained by playing different sports. His contract is back loaded and in his last season he is set to be paid mid twenties. Four months ago I thought no way but now there is a small chance. When you look at Locket and his ability to play look at a similar size guy Darrell Green. Obviously Green was faster, but he was playing at the size his body should be. In playing years ➕️ of rugby you got to know the steroid boys. More often than not they would have a myriad of injuries. Their bodies were never meant to be that big. Their muscle size would interfere with soft tissue. Having said all that one play can end an NFL career. The one thing that will hurt Locket is the unspoken understanding he had with Russell Wilson. If this happens I will break my route and go here. Tyler didn't have any success with Geno because he has not built that chemistry. DK on the other hand runs his routes and will win with his natural size. As yolked as DK is I believe it is all natural. He was lifting with his dad when he was five, then he worked rubber bands as the Bears trainer said it would be better for him at that age, was he right. I never saw your post but always enjoy the conversation. Victoria Chris

Sounds like you know way more about this than me. We've seen how Julio Jones went into steep decline around age 30 and it seemed to come out of nowhere. But Locket's a different person so we'll see.

On one pass Russ threw even though it was a pick, it was a frozen rope. Does Shane Waldron have the ability to scheme people open. He has the schemes to do it, does he have the feel. Just as importantly who is his eye in the sky that can see what happened on the last play. This information is never talked about. Waldron needs that help and his own feel, like being a chess master. Sean McVay knows he will not be challenged or screamed at for bad play calls. I hope Pete let's Shane feel that way. If Lock can pick up the offense that is our best chance. I keep thinking our players are every bit as good as the Rams and Goff were. Let's hope we can enjoy some success

I can't imagine Pete not being positive, can you? That said, Pete's about winning so Waldron needs to show he's growing as a coordinator.

Yeah, we can't say with any confidence yet how Waldron is as an offensive coordinator and evaluation may only get tougher with a new QB

The 'side effects' of the missing Russell Wilson will continue. How much of WHAT, and for how LONG may require the need of a crystal ball.
