You had 6 so couldn’t “rank” per se but only used a 3 twice and then one value each other spot. I know you brought up Love and Nick. My issue is that neither is a FS. Bryant just massively impressed me last year. He reminded me a lot of ET. His tracking ball and receiver great. He plays that deep field don’t get past him so well. Not ET well. Doesn’t tackle as well but goes for knockdown of ball, or if that doesn’t with the ball carrier. Abe it just depends. But I’m going with doctors and knee build. Clearly his knees strong he’s the #1 even before Cross. K9 can be replaced. But he also has that extra about him. But he is too much Penny/Carson/Rawls. Mafe good but not great. Depends on money. Riq just what will he do. He matures he’s right there with Abe but… Noah still love him but now 2 young guys that make one excellent TE potential.
The first question should be positional value and quality of the player should come second. I have to prioritize the higher value positions regardless of the individual. If I have a OT, CB, and edge that are worth their market value, then I'll overpay them because they are so difficult to replace. I have to consider overpaying those positions, because someone else will. As much as I like Coby and Walker, I really can't rate them higher than a 3, simply due to the positions they play. I won't overpay a free safety unless he's truly unique, but I will overpay a solid right tackle. This doesn't mean every edge player deserves a 5, either. I don't rate Mafe as more than a 2 or 3, simply because he hasn't shown me enough consistency (yet) to warrant a market-value second contract. If Abe, Woolen and Mafe are the only guys I'm willing to consider giving a 5 to, maybe no one gets a 5.
The decision to overpay to keep your best players gets easier, too, if you believe a championship roster is attainable. As the new Seahawks GM, I think the time is right to make those moves, based on our roster and the outlook of the other teams in our division.
I read that same suggestion on Fieldgulls this morning, but I dunno. We have 4 young guards that can compete for one spot. If we bring in a vet, it would need to be because we've already decided none of them are good enough to take that spot. And I don't think we're close to knowing that. If we were to bring in a vet, I'd guess it would be in August, on a close to minimum deal, with little to no guaranteed money.
I don't want to take snaps away from the young'uns just yet. Maybe later in the summer if they're not holding up.
I watched the Alexandre Castro tape breakdown of Sundell's snaps last year, and I liked what I saw. Limited sample size mind you, but he looked more than solid. I think that competition with Olu for centre is very real. Add to that the fact they he and Zabel have played beside each other before, Olu could be in for a real battle.
Lucas, Woolen, Mafe are my priorities, in about that order. Subject to change, of course, and depending on what the player is after. Bryant becomes a priority if it looks like Love will be moved in 26.
I am never going to understand the Woolen hate. He plays a premier position and he plays it well. Look at his coverage grades. It's my firm belief that he got hurt last year, sat out for a couple games and came back before he was 100% and it hurt his play. But after that he played well.
Yes, it would be nice if he was as aggressive as Spoon on tackling but to my eye he's average at worst in regards to tackling.
I'm thinking he's learning to protect his speed from injury. His stretch isn't a big concern, but his knees and ankles are Money. That's his extraordinary Speed. Mix up a tackle wrong and these running backs will make you pay. He's not getting shy or running scared, just getting smart. Good chance I'm wrong, but that's how I choose to see it. It's Year 3, Riq. Go Time. Unleash the Growl, Dawg.
Aside from Woolen and maybe Love, none of the other DBs excel in coverage.
In the same vein as you, I don’t get the love for Bryant. He’s a try guy, not a game changer (or even a potential game changer)—shake a tree and ten try guys will fall out. Of the players Joe asks about, he’s the most easily replaced.
I don’t think it’s an aggressiveness issue, it’s an effort issue. On a number of occasions he gives up on the play before the whistle. This is a hard “no go” for MM. It’s not hate against Woolen, it’s a requirement he play all out from snap to whistle on every play. That is something that is insisted upon in high school, let alone the NFL. He’s been benched for this and mental lapses in coverage. Yes he plays the position very well, as MM admits he does, “when he’s locked in.” — When there are no mental lapses. I don’t hate Woolen, I hate that he doesn’t give 100% and he makes mental mistakes. This is why he’s been benched a few times, and this will keep him from a 2nd contract with the Seahawks if he doesn’t turn a new leaf this year. As of a few weeks ago, Brady Henderson gave the chances of a Woolen extension at 1 out of 10, citing these issues. I’m not saying he can’t earn a second contract. If he can play at 100% from snap to whistle, reduce mental mistakes ,and play “locked in” as MM describes his play as elite when that occurs. We’d all love to see him earn that 2nd contract, but as of the end of last year, his 3rd, those mistakes were still happening.
And if he's not always locked in when he's making a 5th round draft pick salary, does that get better once he gets his FA cash? I dunno. He's got all the talent in the world, but if I have to pay a CB on this defense, it will be Spoon, because I know that, barring injury, I'm getting my money's worth.
Some team will throw a lot of money at Woolen, because of the talent, the speed, and the all-pro. I just don't think it should be us, unless he cleans up the mental lapses, and his run support. I'm not hating on him. But if two successive coaches have seen fit to bench you, then there is something going on there.
So long as the contract doesn't force us to let other crucial guys go, then JS will keep him. That's how we get to the Big Dance: as a Team. I see Schneider trying to build a long view where everybody gets to look back at a lucrative career worth being a part in making it happen. Rings included. Permanent Respect.
Spoon for starters. Both OT's. Mafe. Like I said, he's been benched by two successive coaches for a reason. If those reasons go away, then I'd pay him, but not to the degree it risks being able to keep Spoon when he's up.
If other teams will offer him substantial cash and term, then my bet is JS will let him go, to protect the cap for others. Just one man's opinion.
Some serious "if's" attached to those ratings. IF Lucas and Walker stay healthy, AND IF the O-line is much improved, then they are both in the "4-5" range...if not, they slide to 3 or less. I guess we know that we don't know what we don't know until the pre-season head bang'n begins right?
Darwin would appreciate the process...survival of the fittest, fastest, strongest and quickest to learn...and then there are 53. I love the long shot who emerges as a budding star (circa Bobo). I like Bobo in red zone jump balls. GO HAWKS!
If the medical is looking good for Abe, he's my #1 and we should try to lock in Cross as well next spring. Gotta have the two tackles if they continue to play well, and stay healthy. Mafe would be next for me if the market doesn't get carried away, like it can for players north of 8 sacks/year. I'd like to keep Cobee, but we can't overpay to do it. K9 is impossible to figure out until 2025 plays out. Another injury riddled year and I wouldn't pay him much to stay. A breakout year in the new scheme, and maybe I would pay him a lot.
2022 was certainly an impactful draft. Good problems to have.
Right now, I can’t prioritize any of them without any knowledge of how they play in 2025. Assuming they each play up to their capacity:
5 - Woolen. On defense, this game is about making life tough for the QB. Woolen is the Hawks best coverage DB and likely the toughest of the six to replace. Even today, his run defense is not as weak as supposed.
4 - Mafe. You never have enough pass rushers. Never.
3 - Lucas. Assuming Zabel works out, they could get away with replacement-level at the other OL positions. I don’t really believe in Lucas’ long-term health.
2 - Walker. As much talent as he has, there will be cheaper options.
1 - Bryant. Nice player but no loss. Maybe the easiest of the five to upgrade.
0 - Fant. 28 next year and has never been able to replicate his Denver numbers. Even if he has a good year, if Arroyo is ready Fant is gone.
After Walton and Byrd, the NBA learned to teach their Big Men to shuffle down court, rather than move at an all-out sprint. Their knees and ankles simply will not hold up to the hammering, long term. Pete wondered if Abe's condition is "chronic". If so, then the clock is ticking. I've not heard it defined yet.
Yeah. Pretty rude development. I'd like to see him smile and laugh more. One minute the sky is the limit and boom! Reality strikes. At least the playing surface isn't hardwood, so let's hope the damage was minimal. I do know the surgeons developed an artificial cartilage that I have in my neck from 15 years ago. My bet is Kubiak will minimize plays tasking Abe with pulling. Seeing him doing so will tell us the news is betting better. He looks more fit and less fat. No doubt part of the therapy. I read he still gained 3 lbs.
5 for Bryant. He's solid and versatile, and pretty cheap. The ideal player to try and get secured as it eases a lot of pressures in the DB room by setting a solid floor.
Woolen comparitively gets a 2. Eye catching rookie year, then a lot of very meh. Not against keeping him, just he's very low priority and to me relatively replacable. Sort of same for KW3, who is good, but not good enough to force my hand as GM. He's a RB, he won't be in great league wide demand, and he can be replace pretty easily, so low priority score but i would like to keep him on.
Fant's just gone. He'd need a 15 TD 2000yd season to change my mind.
Lucas gets a 3. Because i need to wait and see how fixed that knee is. If he can play a full season he's worthy of a contract, but that for now is still a sizable if. If he can't play a full season he's a cut.
Mafe's in a similar boat to KW3 above. Would need to see a lot more consistency to really put any priority to a contract renewal.
With more smart drafting and FA work done since the 2022 class came in, there's plenty of scope in the budget and draft picks to plug up gaps. And really be adding the couple of pieces to turn the team into SB contenders by being a bit hardline with the above contract talks. Giving more guarantee/priority to the likes of Woolen/Mafe/Lucas/KW3 feels like routing direct to 10 wins + Rd 1 bounce. So little bit of gamble in finding replacements to go after the big goal.
I gave my 5 to Abe. Assuming he really has 2 knees this year, it’s a given.
Some combination of Cobe, Mafe and K9 will be extended. All 3 need a breakout season, except maybe Mafe. Is there even such a thing as a mid level second contract price for a OLB? It seems you either pay them a huge contract or let them walk.
I’m ambivalent about Fant. Willing to give a mulligan for ’24 in Grubb’s system. And even then, he ran that one play where he lined up as a blocker and got open for a reception in many games. And he’s a pretty sticky blocker sometimes.
I will be shocked if they extend Woolen. I hope he proves me wrong but I have never seen a player with better stats who looks worse in actual games.
WOOLEN: My inclination on Woolen is you can’t sign him unless he resolves his issues that have plagued him and gotten him benched not only by MM, but also by Carroll. He’s got to limit his mental lapses and continue to work on his run game defense. I don’t see him signed until well into the season, if at all. If Jobe takes a step forward and Shaq Griffin plays as well as he did in MN last year, I could see Woolen traded before the deadline. Less than likely to get a contract before January.
LUCAS: I believe they want to find a reason to extent him as much or more than anyone on this list. I doubt they will do it unless his knee is still holding up near the end of the season. It will be costly waiting, because if he looks fully healthy, I can see him as a pro bowl RT this year. He looks as if he’s in amazing shape in the pics and videos from camp so far. Less than likely to get a contract before December.
K9: If K9 stays healthy for 17 games, I’d be surprised if he doesn’t get 1400 yards minimum. I would sign him early if he takes a discount for his injury history and lack of production since his rookie year. He might not want to sign and want to bet on himself. Less than likely to get a contract before January unless it is low on guaranteed and high on incentives.
MAFE: Mafe still feels like a player who has a higher upside of 12-14 sacks and good run defense. That being said he didn’t make a huge jump last year. I think they could offer him a contract that will be lower than he wants. Will he accept a low contract of ~ $15 million APY? It probably won’t get done before a prove it season this year. Less likely to get a contract before January.
BRYANT: When he got his chance, he grabbed it and he always seems to make big plays. He is also not likely to be extremely expensive. I see him signed before camp, or during camp. Maybe the first on unless they extend Cross before him.
FANT: If Arroyo looks healthy and making plays, I see Fant traded before the deadline. Unlikely to get extended at all.
It’s always good to hear from beat reporters who are at every practice open to the press. Greg Bell of the Tribune was interviewed on the hawkzone podcast. Worth a listen. https://youtu.be/M8MP6_RFqlM?si=tmWx9KUknVyhuPOT
I think the CBs I would sign Lucas after. Walker no let him go. Injuries and the self life is not worth it. A Case could be made for Lucas and Riq first as they were not 1st rounders.
I agree, but i would still offer market to walker, but I’m not in a panic lock-down for him. I think he is popular and a game tilter when fully healthy so worth some risk, but reason has to apply with the redflags you mention.
I'm thinking we will review our ratings on K9 after he scores us some crucial TDs and sets records for this next year. Did he not win a college game almost single-handedly?
You had 6 so couldn’t “rank” per se but only used a 3 twice and then one value each other spot. I know you brought up Love and Nick. My issue is that neither is a FS. As of today and what i know, Made and Bryant are highest priorities. They are closest to proven earned extensions.
Lucas is a "can he stay healthy" decision. I know he can play, if he can last the season staying off IR then extend
Walker, Fant and Woolen. Let walk and so we can get compensation picks from whoever they sign with.
Thing is, every GM in the league would trade Bryant straight up for Woolen. It wouldn’t be a that tough a call.
Right now, I can’t prioritize any of them without any knowledge of how they play in 2025. Assuming they each play up to their capacity:
