Will Jason Peters debut for Seahawks in Week 6?
Seahawks practice squad check-in, reminder: Seaside Joe 1680
It’s been almost four weeks since the Seattle Seahawks signed 41-year-old tackle Jason Peters and the offense managed to survive three games—with a 3-0 record—without having to call on his services just yet. That is not counting the help that Peters has provided as a mentor and coach to Jake Curhan and Stone Forsythe during their extended snaps at tackle.
Could the Seahawks need more than mentorship from Peters when they play the Cincinnati Bengals in eight days?
This could be counterintuitive to the knowledge that Seattle might get back Charles Cross in Week 6, but a multitude of factors could lead to Peters making his Seahawks debut soon, including:
Cross might not return
Abe Lucas won’t be eligible to return until Week 7
Both Phil Haynes and Damien Lewis were injured in Week 4
The Seahawks could feel that Peters would be an upgrade to Jake Curhan in pass protection if the 41-year-old is conditioned for his 2023 debut
Jason Peters played tackle and guard for the Dallas Cowboys last season, so even just having him available as a practice squad elevation could be a good idea next Sunday. The Seahawks were scraping the end of the roster when they lost Lewis and Haynes with no clear answer if Pete Carroll had to keep digging.
Peters was a story in the week after his signing but he’s since been floating on the practice squad without any updates, mostly because the offensive line hasn’t been as much of a concern as feared when Cross and Lucas went down. But perhaps being a mentor to Forsythe and Curhan wouldn’t be as valuable as being a Plan B.
For the record, here is the current Seattle Seahawks practice squad:
OT Jason Peters
C Joey Hunt
WR Easop Winston
WR Cody Thompson
WR Cade Johnson
WR Tyjon Lindsey
RB SaRodorick Thompson
TE Tyler Mabry
NT Matt Gotel
ILB Patrick O’Connell
OLB Tyreke Smith
OLB Levi Bell
S Ty Okada
S Teez Tabor
NT Carl Davis
It is fabulous to have Peters as a "fall back" option at this point. On the one hand Olu at C and Brown at G seems to be a good fix BUT if there is any further injury it would be disaster. Keeping Brown at C with Olu at backup, and inserting Peters at either G (for Lewis) or RT (as an upgrade on Curhan) would be a good plan while waiting for Lucas/Cross to get back to full health.
But man... the experience that Bradford and Olu have been getting (Forsyth and Curhan also) is so important and valuable down the road.
The Bengals defense is giving up yards like...they're the Seahawks defense (ha) but what is their DL like this year? I see they have 12 sacks after 4 games, but the Seahawks only have 16 sacks on the season after that Monday Night Sackball game?!!? Oh my god.
Fingers crossed for Charles Cross' imminent return and yeah, Peters at G or RT may be a necessity.
