- Walker and Charbs developing together. Our running game has real potential. If we can get that line a little healthier, Uncle Will back, with Metcalf and Bobo blocking, then that can be the thing that carries our offense and opens up the passing game for Geno. Walker is running so much better this year than last, even if he hasn't popped the long TD runs yet. That will come. And then bringing Charbs in behind him late in a drive, well that isn't something any DB will want a part of very soon. If stopping the run is all about want-to, well, there's gonna be some players that aren't going to want to. Especially late in games if we've stayed on the positive side of the time-of-possession game.
- Getting our #1 pass defense together. With Woolen back and paired up with Spoon, with Jamal coming back, with the pass rush starting to slowly come around, I want to see what comes of this. I'm still worried about what we're giving up in the middle of the field, which I think is some on Bobby, some on the safeties, and some on the nickel DB......and maybe other factors, including lack of QB pressure. But with our 2 best DB's outside, hopefully we can sort out the middle of the field, and Jamal should help with that. Get the pressure ramped up a bit more, and maybe we'll be in business. Even league average would make a huge difference.
Looking forward to these things within the Giants game. Would love to go into the bye 3-1, get a little healthier, and then come back with the team identity really crystalizing.
So many really smart observers here. Love it. But my general take is that this defense in particular is in its formative period. If the defensive backfield can gel and give the front guys a bit more support, then we'll see what these athletes are actually capable of. It still feels like a formative period. The porous run defense seems improved. Now here comes Jamal if he can stay healthy. Maybe that is the spark.
I'm skeptical of this team overall, but then I tend toward skepticism when it comes to the Seahawks in recent years. Consider the teams we've faced so far. Compare it to some of the teams up ahead. I expect we'll take care of business against the Giants. But the Bengals are itching to let loose on some poor schlub of a team. The Cardinals are playing their guts out. The Browns look good so far. After the Giants, I don't see any easy wins.
I was looking at the snap counts and I'm to lazy to do the research, but I wonder if everybody that suited up got into the game? It kind of looks like they did.
If you haven't watched Sean Payton's post game news conference it's worth a watch. The man looks like he just finished up a 30 min emotional outburst that would have registered on the Richter scale. One of those near-stroke type prolonged outbursts. I wasn't sure whether the right question would make him break down in sobs, or kill someone on the spot. Dude was a mess. NOBODY wanted to go in the Denver facility on Monday.
Media can’t be trusted--not the one I linked to included. It’s all just to fill space. Sunday was on the Defense and not Russ. Unless Payton thought Russ should have put up 77 pts he sure can’t be blaming him. The Broncos have a deep hole to climb out of and the media isn’t helping them.
With how much russ has struggled to both adapt to new systems and live up to his contract value any gm that took him in a trade is basically preemptively submitting their resignation.
My belief is that Bobo will make more DBs look foolish with that double move . That gets him so open and the fact that he blocks well will get him more snaps. There will be more defenders with their jock straps around their ankles, no doubt.
The development (and hopefully improvement) of our defense will make or break the season for us. There are so many questions still after three weeks because we really haven't seen what the starters look like together. Love and Jones have been the biggest disappointments for me so far, due to preseason expectations, and I'm confused by Mike Jackson, but the lack of success from the edge group isn't really shocking. Let's hope that Mafe continues to improve as a pass rusher and Nwosu does Nwosu things. Let's hope that the D-line improves (Jones in particular) as they get more experience together. Let's hope that Woolen and Spoon can finally play together. Let's hope that Adams can stay healthy and play at an all pro level (ok, I'll settle for pro bowl).
That's a lot to hope for, but it's all attainable. I'm not asking for anyone to become something they're not. I'm only asking for good health and to not be worse than you've been in the past.
"and it is almost impossible to do worse without giving up 70 points in a single game."
And I saw on Twitter last night that even after losing by 50, the Broncos still have a better point differential than the Bears. It feels like defenses (and many QBs) are struggling to start this season.
Third down ugh. Under pressure or not. The Seahawk’s struggle on third down because on offense, the current line of back ups can’t hold up against a four man rush. The Seahawks struggle on defense because the defensive line can’t get pressure with 4 against 5. My hope on offensive is the line gets healthy. My hope IDK Jamal Adams becomes a dominant outside linebacker?
I agree about our OL not holding up, but at least part, if not most, of the reason can be attributed to lack of success on 1st & 2nd downs, too. Waldron was better this game, but still way too many 3rd and longs. Where is the screen game we heard so much about in the offseason? Where are the rush attempts? If our OL can't run block well enough, or pass block well enough, then where are the short crossing routes or swing passes? I'm not sold on either one of our coordinators, yet. I don't see much innovation on either side of the ball to this point. Maybe a few of those "full house" backfields count, but I'd like to see more.
“On early downs this season, Smith’s per-play efficiency is in the same realm as Miami’s Tua Tagovailoa and Detroit’s Jared Goff, two of the best in the league. On third down, Smith is in the same cluster as New England’s Mac Jones and Pittsburgh’s Kenny Pickett.”’
The offense, as a whole, has been good. I think the 3rd downs will get ironed out. The problem really is that there hasn't been 1 problem. So there isn't a direct fix. I think that common sense dictates more 3rd and shorts means more conversions. Better pass pro and less predictability are also very helpful. Getting a little better in some of those areas will make a difference, and getting healthy could be just the fix we need.
Thanks for the link. I like No-E's point that their number of plays has been pretty good, and they're getting points, both help the defense out tremendously.
I firmly believe we're never gonna figure out the screen game because both our offense and defense are so bad at them they can't properly practice them against each other
That is an angle I never considered. It makes a lot of sense. Seriously.
Now, not so seriously, maybe they need to hire a new "screen consultant" like they did pass rush. They could call U. R. Screenen and see if he can help. Maybe he'll do better than B. T.
My bet is they hold back new plays until "something" needs to be done to win. By keeping it out of the game, opponents don't have taped plays to ponder and scheme against. For too long, I saw little difference from the first half to the second.
All I can say is that they back ups for a reason. Screen game is not easy. Winning run blocks is not easy. I attribute improvement in running the ball this week to not playing the Lions. The Lions dominated the Falcons this week and those guys normally can run the ball. My belief is that when the season is over we are going to look back on Week 2 as a quality win.
Just in time (I hope!), I have figured out what I want for Christmas! I want KJ Wright to have Beastmode on his podcast to review The Flying Safety Maneuver.
Pleasepleasepleasepleaseplease...I won't ask for anything else, I promise!
John Schneider is so good at finding run-stuffing veteran reclamations projects every couple years (Rubin, Woods, Reed) but has had very mixed results with vet pass rushers post peak LOB. Nwosu was a clear success last year, Carlos Dunlap was a mixed bag over two seasons, but Jones (so far) is in Sheldon Richardson/Kerry Hyder/Clowney territory.
Signing Hyder was a mistake, he had two good seasons and one was his contract year in one of the best, deepest DLs in the NFL, which Seattle signed him off of. Richardson improved after Seattle but he was never the player he was in his rookie contract. Clowney left and had one more stellar year in Cleveland, but that didn't hold. Dunlap left and got a ring with KC before retiring.
The one consistent factor through all of these acquisitions: Clint Hurtt became DL coach in 2017. I want Hurtt to succeed so badly, he seems like a great guy, but at some point you have to acknowledge how mediocre his track record is with multiple coaching roles.
I am liking the imagination I saw employed in this last game, when Waldron designed two TEs run blocking/pass protecting. In Detroit we saw them augment our two young offensive tackles. Now we have tape. Predictability is fatal at this level of play, which we've seen these last few years. Variations are expected and dealt with. Frustration builds. Gain enough different "looks" and the sheer volume becomes confusing for the opponent. I really suspect we shall see new Looks on defense next Monday when Jamal Adams comes back on defense. Confuse the opposing QBs into inaction and the sacks and hurries will build. Desperate throws equal interceptions, especially with Sherm's influence on Spoon and Riq. I suspect this is what is being corrected from last year's early slump. Guys playing tired and frustrated get hurt, especially when they try to force something good to happen. I'm very optimistic.
Thnx Charlie. I appreciate that, as there is a ton of very smart people commenting. LOB was a true "2nd half/4th quarter team" when Dan Quinn was DC. Russell Wilson was the Master of Chaos with his youthful skills and exuberance and together they were unstoppable. I just watched Wilson's "National Championship" last night on Netflix and detected some possible linkage to the origins of his falling out with Pete. He began intentionally snubbing Pete's congratulations after a Score, raising my red flags. Same with the Golden Tate trade. The genuine Unity began to unravel. "Go Hawks!" lost its' passion.
I think it's been really telling that almost the entire super bowl team is still close to each other except Russ. Lynch actually brought up in an interview he couldn't even directly give Russ a call when they were teammates. He had to call Russ' people to get a call back from Russ the next day. No matter what Russ said publicly that's gonna drive a wedge
The third down defense is frustrating to watch. I expect the defense as a whole to improve because that’s the cycle we’ve come to expect. Every year I think I overrate the roster because it seems we should be getting better results than we are. Or is the roster is good and the coaching/scheme is lacking?
They've had serious depth issues for years now, the secondary was really iffy for quite a while there, now its got all sorts of talent. I think last year the scheme changes didn't match up well with their existing personnel. Coaching and playcalling are what I'm worried about.
The contact rule changes sent the DBs back on their heels. What was a ball-jarring hit is now unsportsmanlike conduct. Playing like Cam Chancellor or Earl Thomas is illegal. Comparing their defense stats to today won't tell us much. I'm pleased to see the Ref's starting to differentiate between cruel hits and damn good football. Let's expect Jamal to push the limits.
You can't lead with your helmet but there's no problem hitting hard. The exception being the QB. Have to be careful to not land on him.
Honestly, I think those changes were long overdue. Too many guys walk away from the game with CTE. The NFL knew for a long time and was slow to do anything to correct it. What they've done isn't remotely enough. Players are going to continue to suffer because of repeated head trauma. But it's hard to address in a sport that's all about violence.
Reed getting pressures and sacks is a sign that the edge rushers are drawing attention away from him. Mafe looked very good last game. He and Nwsosu will get theirs, maybe starting this week against the Giants. The DL will continue to improve and so I am skeptical in the 3rd down success rate and red zone success rate against Seattle's D. The points per drive against will drop, and total points surrendered will drop, as the DL improves.
The secondary will improve also if the Seahawks can get everyone strong and healthy, maybe after the bye. It is going to be very interesting to see what impact Adams will have this week. When healthy he is a potential game-changer, just as Witherspoon potentially is as well. Adams coming back might be adding another "blue chipper" to the D.
It was so much fun seeing Charbs get some work vs Carolina. And Bobo! Mo' BOBO might help the red zone efficiency (and 3rd down as well)!
The fans' expectations and team's need for Adams to have a significant impact are huge, even more so on national television AND back in New York City (oh wait, New Jersey). I hope Pete isn't setting Adams up with choosing to bring him back for this particular game but fingers are crossed. But he really must have a big, noticeable impact, for so many reasons.
He trucked that dude into the air for 4-5 yards. It was one of the filthiest things I've seen on broadcast TV in quite some time. If Joe includes that in the Vision Board going forward, it will need a parental warning for pornography.
At first I thought you might have over estimated the distance. That's 12-15 feet and that's a long dog gone ways, but I've watched the clip a few more times and you're right! That poor kid really did travel 4-5 yards in the air.
I made a joke about it Sunday night in my comment, I thought for sure i was wrong, but he really did steal that guy's soul and send him into the end zone.
Two things I'm really excited about coming up;
- Walker and Charbs developing together. Our running game has real potential. If we can get that line a little healthier, Uncle Will back, with Metcalf and Bobo blocking, then that can be the thing that carries our offense and opens up the passing game for Geno. He probably went home and broke......everything.
There's an article claiming he is about ready to bench or trade Wilson:

The sources are two execs from other teams hazarding guesses. Here’s another idle guess that says they get along fine: https://bleacherreport.com/articles/10091008-broncos-russell-wilson-sean-payton-reportedly-get-along-really-well?ref=upstract.com

Smart strategy. Keep your ammo dry.

Yes, our 3rd down offense is definitely hampered by our makeshift o-line!

On the current Man2Man, Mike Dugar quotes stats that have Seattle among the best early down teams. Here’s a related article:
https://theathletic.com/4899914/2023/09/26/seahawks-offense-third-down-red-zone/?source=user_shared_article

Yeah! Go Lions. I have them to place in the Super Bowl this year. (22 to1)
Dude if you put more than a few dollars on that one, you need gamblers anonymous.
A team full of promise and question marks. It’s going to be a typical topsy-turvy year but I really wonder if they will “discover who they are”.
Just in time (I hope!), I have figured out what I want for Christmas! I want KJ Wright to have Beastmode on his podcast to review The Flying Safety Maneuver.

I'd really like to see "No-K" Charbonet do The Flying Safety again. I think that should be kind of a standard Vision Board thing from now on.
If Charbonnet derails another D-Back like that next week the Bengals will have a no contact order placed on him before the game.
Theme music for the fellow while in mid-air....

Or maybe this one:

I was thinking “Gonna Fly Now” the theme from Rocky!
I can envision Old Blue Eyes singing "Fly me to the moon" while that defensive back was airborne.
That was an option that I thought about lol!!!
One could also use his "Come Fly With Me".
He trucked that dude into the air for 4-5 yards. It was one of the filthiest things I've seen on broadcast TV in quite some time. If Joe includes that in the Vision Board going forward, it will need a parental warning for pornography.
Or excessive violence...
