After a fantastic season winning it all, Pete retires. Shane Waldron is hired as the head coach of a struggling team, Larry Izzo becomes head coach and Andy Dickerson the offensive coordinator, preferring to stay with us than becoming OC for Waldron.
The schedule might work out to be ideal. Play bad to average teams early, while building up a 3-1 record, getting pretty banged up, but getting lots of snaps for the young'uns and backups. Get into the bye week to get some injured starters back and fix some of the areas of improvement. Play a few average to underperforming teams, continue to get better, and stay somewhat healthier. Then put it all together against a series of good to great teams. Put on a couple of our best performances of the season (so far), unlock JSN, and come out of that 2-2 or better. Then wrap up the season with confidence, and either squeeze in, or storm into the playoffs.
I know the SF games will be tough, and it is certainly possible we lose both. No way this team doesn't put up a fight though, and with some development, they could go blow for blow. I keep feeling this dominant running game coming. We've only seen glimpses of it, but man, it feels like we should be able to punish teams on the ground. That would make things so much easier for Geno and Waldron.
When Geno and the Team find the keys to unlock 3rd down problems, watch out. This Defense can be counted on to add points themselves, over and above opportunities. Will we ever replicate the rabbit-hat wins from 10 years ago? That's a tall order without Baldwin and Kearse, but having Bobo and JSN is a move in the right direction. (no slight to Tyler or DK) Put the game away by the 4th and we won't have the problems we had then.
Agreed. Start quickly, play with a lead, stop the run, and unleash the hounds. Oh, and don't forget to run the ball down their throats. I'd love to watch a few of those games.
Forgetting to run the ball down their throats is what we all are hoping, especially since our 2nd Super Bowl title was infamously lost by forgetting that exact thing, in many people's eyes
Thanks, I saw that. Rewatched the Patriots game from 2012 the other day. I rewatch the 3 49’er games from 2013 from time to time. Ah, memories. But time to make some new ones.
On the PC succession plan, i've said it before - Mike Tomlin is currently out of contract after the 2024 season. To me it feels like his time there is running out, not because he's a bad coach but just that franchise has fallen back a ways, and there's some solid reasoning behind them breaking-up. I then think he'd slot into Seattle like a foot in a shoe! Primarily defensive minded, good motivator, builds a strong culture, solid draft & fa record. Im a big fan and can see it working well for both sides.
There'll be continuing ground swell behind Coach Prime of course, but i'm not sure how well he'll transition to the NFL. I'm keeping an eye on Frank Smith (current Dolphins OC) who has an impressive list of coaching roles in the NFL (but also, i imagine, most teams are looking at him). And one final name, Jeff Ulbrich (current Jets DC) I think is piecing together a solid resume. [Yes i know there's a strong case for Hurtt/Waldron to be promoted, but I still remain unconvinced on both. And of course Pete could still go on another five years, but worth being aware of who's out there beyond the likes of Bienemy or Campbell who have tons of buzz]
I love Tomlin but the timing won't work out. Pete isn't leaving, Tomlin won't need to reprove himself with a coordinator role (and Pete isn't so ruthless as to fire a coordinator simply to install his successor, there's no Tywin in Pete).
I actually think there's a solid case for not promoting Hurtt at this point. I resisted all the complaining about his last year but I haven't been impressed with his work overall. Jury is still out on Waldron. I think if you're promoting an OC to HC, he has to be an offensive mastermind. Waldron has his moments but he hasn't been consistent.
I like Hurtt as a possible HC candidate. Hiring a good coordinator because their unit performed well just doesn't equate to a good HC. It's about leadership, communication style, evaluating other coaches and players, and vision. Hurtt may not be the most successful coordinator, but he has the HC qualities in spades.
There are a few scenarios I can see Pete leaving after next season. 1) Team is sold and new owner wants to start over (not beyond reason, although maybe more a 25-26 timeline). 2) 'Hawks put it all together to win Superbowl LIX and Pete bows out ontop having secured his legacy beyond any doubts. 3) 'Hawks go belly up miss the playoffs this year and next and Pete can't face a genuine rebuild.
Of course it's all hypothetical, and even then would assume Tomlin actually leaving the Steelers (and the reality is he's in a similar spot to Pete, so much credit in balance he can freely choose his exit regardless of what happens). But it is a valid question to have in mind going forwards, when does the 72 year old decide to move on and what do we then do. But keep an eye on Smith & Ulbrich, there will be suitors coming soon to given them shots at a HC role.
Those are all reasonable scenarios. I do think that regardless of what Allen says publicly, the team will be sold sooner (within 5 years) than later (in the 20 years she mentioned). Pete's current contract ends in 2025, so that might be a factor, because any new owner will want some say in their new toy. I'd be surprised if Pete is still coaching five years from now, but mainly because of his age.
Please, please, please, not Coach Prime! He's the opposite of Pete. It's not about making the players as successful as they possibly can be, it's about......him. Hard pass.
The Hawks are fortunate to have played weaker teams while giving Forsythe and Curhan valuable OJT. They will need that rotational depth at OT as the season goes forward. The DL should improve slowly if they can stay healthy enough. The question mark, to my surprise, is Geno.
I have been wondering if Prez stayed in for the entire game, does Witherspoon get all of those opportunities? Adams was all over my TV screen for four plays, and then it was Witherspoon. There's a legit question of which of them wins out vulturing big plays off the other, because they both play with the same fire, speed, and elite awareness.
Lots of Ifs? Get healthy and remain that way. Finally having a Nickel corner, Yeah! DW looks like the real deal and as of now a welcome addition, in that they have someone that can play the nickel! They have some guys moving forward that can play on the O-line, that makes me feel warm all over! It would be nice to know if (hope you do the story on Andy Dickerson) he had allot to do with their draft selections, either way they are finally hitting!~ If the D-line continues to jell and play gap oriented ball. So great about Jarren, I thought he would come in and fit great, and he sure has! For the DE/LB rush group ,stay home and force the run inside while they continue to get better on the rush- I truly see this team getting better ( maybe allot ) as the year goes on, if the IF's don't stand up and smack them . Go Hawks!
In the other thread the Schlerth article was referenced (I am sorry I forgot who posted about it) but the gist is that if your QB gets sacked like Jones was sacked (like Spinal Tap the Seahawks turned it up to 11) the playcaller should be fired. Now that the Seahawks have demonstrated that they have a dangerous front 7, it is unlikely they get the opportunity to accumulate that many again.
But... the Seahawks have gone 3-1 without putting up a complete game on the offensive side of the ball. The D has shown what it can do (and may still significantly improve as the secondary gets more time together--that was the first Witherspoon + Riq game and Adams hardly played.)
The Seahawks still own the Superbowl Elder Wand and they won't give it up without a fight!
I love to get hyped about the Seahawks. Hey, I’m a fan! But it’s so true that schedule has a lot to do with success/performance. I’ll take all the wins, but wins against NY and Carolina are not predictive of wins against the better teams.
Another reason for the Moons, was that Commanders was bad, and also arbitrary. Why not select something else arbitrary... like Moons. (As explained to me by SSJ when I asked the same this past offseason)

Also, RUN THE DAMN BALL is the most frequent thing I yell at Shane through my BatPhone (aka my TV)

YouTube has most all the full games, Chris.

When our defense give up 3rd and long - stuff ‘em on 1st and 2nd, but …
I thought of Will Ferrell’s character from Austin Powers - impatient with 3rd tries!

If Witherspoon and Prez combine for tfl will there be a spontaneous combustion on the field?

Hey, can you please tell me why you call the commanders the moons?
How about the “commies”?
LOL-- he wrote once that he doesn’t like the name Commanders so he chose the Moons for them 🤣🤣
Aha, thanks for that.
Another reason for the Moons, was that Commanders was bad, and also arbitrary. Why not select something else arbitrary... like Moons. (As explained to me by SSJ when I asked the same this past offseason)
And they got trounced by the Bears tonight!
Gotta admit, was wondering for a sec if the writing streak had ended. Just as I was about to close up the app, the article appears. Nice timing.
